in the hardware readme that is pinned Word Not Allowed says in no uncertain terms the IB is not performing as well as the SB for our application. I'm wondering how the i5 non HT family is comparing to the i7 non HT for FSX applications. Is it worth the extra money to go with a sB i7 or build the system around the i5 SB and use the money to buy the case or something along those lines.

Heh. What a coincidence. I ask myself the same question, too. The i5-2500k is attractive at its $220 price, vs. $310 for the i7-2700k. I still lean 2700k because

a. 2700k is a high bin 2600k...possibly a better chance at stable high clocks over the long haul

b. I run other things besides FSX, so the HT won't be wasted on me

Depends on how much you want to spend. I'm kind of splurging. Not to the point of dropping $1000 for a cpu (which I will not do), but I did spend $500 on a video card (eVGA GTX680) which is...wow...I could have spent that money on wine, women, and song instead, but oh well. I want high levels of IQ, particularly some nice antialiasing modes, so GTX680 it was.

The folks here are for the i7-2700, have y'all used the ib 3770 or the 3570 in play running fsx?

Hi

I dont now , 3770k is not hot upp to 4,7 and to gain the same from à 2700k its 5ghz

And thats Very easy .

But on both spend some extra money on fast mems 2700 cheap 2133 cl11 is better than

1600mhz cl7 and dont Buy 1600mhz to 3770 thats waste of money at least 2400mhz rams.

2600 is not as good as 2700 the memcontroller is sligtlyv better and hold vtt imc voltage

Better if you want overclock

Kind regards Hasse

My 14 year old grandson just showed my the August Issue of PC Gamer Magazine. The hardware guru, has a running page for his recommendations for a PC Gaming Rig. He has updated 3 major items this month and is now recommending

- Intel i5 3570K procesor ($240)

- Gigabyte Z77-D3H motherboard ($120 but Z68 is a good option if cheaper)

- AMD Radeon HD 7850 ($240 w/ lower prices expected soon)

the full spec is laid out with the following

- Case Corsair Carbide 500R ($120)

- RAM 8 GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 1600 DDR3 ($47)

- HD Seagate Barracuda 2 TB ($120)

- PSU Cooler Master 80+ 650 w ($85)

- Monitor AOC 12353Ph ($190)

- DVD Drive Samsung SH-222AB ($20)

Pick up the magazine at the local rack and read the details and see the other pieces of the rig.

Total price is $1345. Wow.

Comments? Faster memory? optional nVidia card?

When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .

Can someone discuss the D3H vs DS3H motherboard for this applicaiton listed above? I see several suppliers with bundles for the i5-3750/DS3H with price $50 -$60 less than the D3H Amazon price.

\

How about on the Seagate HD - bare vs kit? 2TB vs 3TB or maybe 4TB to handle all those huge scenery files.

When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .

The deciding factor seems to be overclocking. Current Ivy Bridge processors are running really hot temps while only doing moderate clocks.

I think it is coming down to how much you plan to clock it. To me, today's IB's are space heaters. I lean towards the i7 2700k for my own build. I'd love to hear others input on this topic, too.

Incorrect.

Also incorrect.

IB + fast memory + cooling measures needed to deal with the heat > SB.

Conventional wisdom on these forums simply doesn't account for the above. Personal experience says the above is true. Just look at the FSXMark 11 charts, IB is right up at the top, trading blows with SB at much higher clocks. westman, HLJames, and myself have all demonstrated this.

So let's break it down. IB runs hot because Intel screwed the pooch on the use of thermal interface material (TIM, i.e. thermal paste) under the integrated heat spreader (IHS) rather than fluxless solder, as was used in SB. This means when you overclock IB and apply additional voltage, the heat has nowhere to go, it literally gets trapped under the IHS and "cooks" the processor (no damage occurs, this is just an analogy). Fortunately, there is an answer. Unfortunately, the answer involved voiding your warranty. Fortunately again, the risk is very small if you have a steady hand and use the correct implement for the procedure, i.e. a bare razor blade (not a knife of any sort). One need simply insert a razor blade at the corner of where the package meets the IHS, and work the razor back and forth until enough "bite" exists that you can simply push the blade in with the force of your thumbs. Repeat at all 4 corners until there is no more glue holding the IHS down on the package, then pop the package off and clean up the horrible TIM and replace it with some good TIM. I recommend the use of liquid metal TIMs like Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra, or Phobya Liquid Metal.

If you do the above, you bring IB's temps back in line with SB's, or very close to. SB still has superior thermal dissipation due to the use of said fluxless solder, which has about twice the thermal conductivity of the best TIM on the market (the aforementioned liquid metal products). Fortunately, those liquid metal products are many times better than all the other silicon/diamond/silver based pastes on the market so temps drop by *over 20 C* rather than 5-10 (or none at all in some cases). I have successfully done this on 3 IB CPUs and will shortly do another. The temp difference is dramatic and instantly allows for an easy overclock of an additional 100-200MHz, in some cases more and with still lower temps than before.

Bottom line: SB is old hat. It's still a great CPU, and it's not like the difference between SB and IB is night and day, but if you're buying new today why buy old technology for the same price? Doesn't make sense to me.

Manny, I want to thank you for such a nice system you have suggested here. I will bookmark this thread because I really do like the specs and the price!!! I hope I can buy such a system very soon to replace my current 5 year old system:

E8400 @ 4GHz CPU | nVidia GTX280 videocard | 4GB DDR2 memory | LP UT P35 mobo | 150GB WD Velociraptor HDD | SB PCI-E X-FI soundcard | Windows 7 Ultimate | 3x Dell 24" monitors with TripleHead2Go Digital

You think the upgrade will be noticeable on my FSX-ONLY machine listed above? BTW, what are the Word Not Allowed tweaks?

You Betcha. I see you have three 24" monitor? Are they all same make and model? In that case a GTX670 would justice to those three monitors and you don't need the tripletogo thingi. But the three monitor setup does pays a big FPS price. My setpup initially with one 24" had 30FPS locked and smooth as butter with many addons and AI aircrafts etc...but then when I added 2 more 24" which gives a spectaculr wide view, I had to cut down elsehwere to get reasonable FPS. Not sure if you use your triple to go with a lower resolution on 3 monitors if you can save on Frames.

Yup, all 3 monitors are identical (Dell 24" widescreen @1920x1080) but I have the setup running at 3840x1024x32 and even at that resolution, I have ALL my scenery sliders full left. :-( FSX looks like FS2002.

So, with the GTX670, I won't need triplehead2go anymore? Even if my monitors are DVI and NOT displayport?

Ithe 1920 x 1080 its native resolution?

I have the Dell 2405FPW with 1920 X 1200 as its native resolution and using the EVA GTX670 I have connected them to the three monitor on its DVI-D connector

The 670 has one DVI-I and one DVI-D that is connected to two of the monitor on its DVI input. I then have a $6 cable HDMI to DVI cable to connect to the third monitor with DVI input. HDMI to DVI works like a charm with most cheapo cable. So there you go...three monitors with DVI input. it also has a fourth out the DP which I am yet to test it out. I have a cable for that DP to DVI which is not as straight forward as HDMI to DVI... so I need to test that out when I get some free time so I can see how I can connect my toruch screen 4th monitor to my setup.

BTW...Keep your triple to go thingi so you can do a compare and report back the FPS hit using tripehead2go vs nvedia surround... FPS impact and quality of em both.

Ooops my bad! Yes, I have the same monitors as you, 2405FPW ;-) So, you can have 3 monitors with only the GTX670! Dammit bro, you are making it too tempting for me to start upgrading!

Ok, I think I can still use some of my hardware, what you think?

I can use the following:

Case: Cooler Master Cosmos S

Power supply: ThermalTake 750W

HDDs: 150GB SATAII WD Velociraptor 10K RPM and 320GB WD SATAII 7,200RPM

Monitors: 3x Dell 2405FPW DVI

Soundcard: Creative PCI-E X-Fi Extreme-music

Speakers: Logitech 5.1

I just need to buy CPU/MOBO/VIDEO/MEMORY, right?

For the memory, I can just buy one stick of 4GB since FSX does not use more than 4GB and this PC is ONLY for FSX. I use it for nothing else.

Yes, you can cannibalize your own PC and add just the things you mentioed. the CPU, MB, Video card and memory/.

No 4GB single stick won't do. 4Gig is ok but you need dual stick. Not sure if you can get 2G X 2...since memory is cheep, get 4Gig x 2 to take advantage of the dual memory channel. You also need a faster memory ...atleast 2400 since the IB can take advantage of it and you could get 3-5FPS+ just on faster memory.

Your cooler may need an adator for the new MB. that metal thing to hold the cooler.

If you can afford it, add atleast 1 SSD 256Gb for your FSX and use your other HD for the OS and maybe for large photoscenery files if you don't want crowd that SSD. I use only my most often flown areas in that SSD.... Not so frequently flown large photoscenery goes onto the HD. :)

Those are great suggestions, Manny. Yea, I will go with the memory you posted (8GB). As for the mobo adapter, are you referring to the back plate where all the connectors are? If so, new mobos usually come with that plate. If that is not what you are talking about, then I don't know what it is. lol

As for the HDDs, is there is a real world difference between SATA 3GB and SATA 6GB? The HDDs I have are SATA 3GB and now I'm debating on whether I should get a new 6GB HDD for the OS along with a SSD for FSX...

Regards,

Efrain Ruiz
LiveDISPATCH @ http://www.livedispatch.org (CLOSED) ☹️

No..Back plate won't come with the MB.. I was actually talking about the metal cross thing that holds the cooler to the four female holes in the CPU corner. If your existing one is adjustable for the 1155MB Socket 1155 then you should be fine. If not you need to call the cooler vendor and ask them to mail you one.

If you are buying a new HD get the 6MB SATA III. There is no price difference between this and the earlier version so go the big number.. :)

But if you have your old HD use it for your OS. Not sure if its worth getting a new HD just for the SATA III. Although I did get a new 1TB HD for the extra photoscenery. I always have use for HDs. I have one of those USB docking stations which I use all the old SATA HD with for backup. I take C: drive OS image backup, I take my FSX backup, I even keep at least two copies of my photosceneries. For the c: drive image I keep atleast three generations... current (Child), father and grandfather. I am paranoid of virus hit. I have been burned before.... So I have Acronis backup system in place. Reinstalling FSX is a nightmare with so many addons. I am also into Photography....So I need HDs. :)
