Using Rudder Pedals and Joystick Twist Axis

Featured Replies

I recently got rudder pedals, but I still use the twist axis on my joystick to taxi on the ground, in order to simulate a tiller. However, sometimes my joystick stops responding on the axis, causing me to quickly turn to the rudder pedals to turn. Unfortunately, the rudder pedals work, but then they too stop responding as I try to gain back control of the joystick. This is really annoying, as it can completely mess up my runway entry procedure, where this phenomena seems to happen the most (I don't know if it has to do with the slight braking I tend to do before entering the runway). Should I just disable my joystick's rudder axis and stick to the pedals? Could it be an NGX bug, as I have been flying the NGX exclusively since the day it came out and don't know if it would happen with other planes?

Do you use a registered version of FSUIPC? If not I would recommend it.

I have had my rudder twist axis and my rudder pedals on at the same time and they do tend to interfere sometimes and not just on the NGX. I have the Saitek X52 sytem and the CH Products Pro Pedals. It has been my experience to just disable the joystick rudder axis in FSX and use the pedals exclusively for taxi and regular rudder operations. I never have an issue that way and the toe brakes work just fine. I use the toe brakes to assist in turning sometimes while on the ground. I do have a small "dead zone" setup in each toe brake axis so that there is no chance of interference there.

Only the free version.

Yeah, if there is no other solution, I might just disable my joystick's rudder axis altogether, as I am getting tired of going into the grass when lining up with the runway.

My experience with the same thing convinced me to not have two controllers fighting for the same axis.

There should be done something with pedals, that below 80 Knot you use them with tiller axis and then switch to the rudder axis.

is it possible ?

Have a look in your FSUIPC User Guide — the boxed section about the steering tiller on the Axis Assignments page. Simply put, below the specified MaxSteerSpeed the tiller axis has authority, whilst above it the rudder takes over. It's a gradual switch of course, but you'll find all the details (along with lots of other goodies) in Pete Dowson's excellent documentation.

Cheers,
