July 19, 201213 yr Hey all, what you all been up to? Its summer now, weather is nice.. Anybody doing anything interesting? I haven't been on FS in ages.. Spending too much time playing Star Trek Online.!!! Hope to see you all in the skies soon..
July 19, 201213 yr I've been having fun with the PMDG NGX - been practising some of the auto flight features such as VNAV and SIDS and STARS which I haven't done much of in the past. I usually make the airport's VOR my waypoint and then take over manual control when I get close. It's fun for a change! It's just about half way through the year - RTW Race wise. Looking forward to getting into it again. I'm going to get A2A's new P51D sometime soon so I can practise before the race. Maybe they'll have the H ready for the race too! Mike Beckwith
July 23, 201213 yr I've been a secret tubeliner for a while now Eamonn. I was flying the PMDG NG in FS9 years ago, so I know my way round the FMC pretty well. Their new NGX is a step up though - so far everything seems to work as promised (speed and altitude restrictions, for example, which was a shortcoming of the original NG as I recall). Also, I've found that you have to ditch ATC, or set the wind direction at your destination so that you'll get the runway you're planning on, so that you can enter a complete plan before you take-off. It's no good trying to enter waypoints on the fly which is what I was trying to do last time I tried VNAV and STARS. I can't wait to see their T7. Mike Beckwith
July 24, 201213 yr Hey Guys. I have been proplining around the world in the A2A Boeing #77 Stratocruiser. Looking forward to the PMDG DC-6 so I can do some bush flying in Alaska. July 24, 201213 yr Those are amazing shots of Hong Kong Jeff. 12 hours and 18 minutes from Brisbane to Honolulu!? How were you navigating? Did you follow the moving map display or did you do it the old fashioned way - with a heading bug and a drift gauge? Mike Beckwith
July 25, 201213 yr I do it the easy way. I used the FSX built-in autopilot. Turn on the auto pilot, shift from heading to nav mode, then shift from VOR to GPS mode. The auto pilot will then follow the flight plan course line. Except when it doesn't, which happens every now and then. For the very long flights I will usually start my flight in late evening and for the first two hours I manage the climb to cruise altitude. When it is a very long flight I will take full fuel/consumables but medium passenger freight load. Target altitude is 31000 feet. It takes some time to get to that altitude. Once at cruise I will lean out the mixture to maintain about 184knts indicated airspeed. Check the navigation map to verify that I'm still tracking the course line, check the range estimate at current fuel consuption and speed to make sure I can still reach my destination and figure out my reserves. Then I call it a night and go to sleep for the night. Eight hours later I will fall out of bed and check in on my progress. If all has gone well I am about two hours from my destination and can have breakfast and get some coffee before getting back into the pilots seat to start down. If all has not gone well then I may be close to one thousand miles off course. Sometimes the autopilot drops out of Nav mode and into heading mode. That happened when I was attempting a leg from Athens to Bangkok. When I woke up I found that I was off course and in far western China near Tibet and that I had lost my turbos. I had to divert to Chongquing. I made it down to safely but was on fumes when I landed. I did achieve my best economy on that leg though. The Hong Kong pics were from my relatively short leg from Chongquing. So far I have about 70hrs on the current engines and they are in good condition. Two more legs to complete my round the world tour. PHNL-KSFO, KSFO-KBOS are the final legs. | Windows 11 | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | i9-14900K | RTX 4090 | 64GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 | 4TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 | 2x 4TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 | CORSAIR AX1600i ATX Titanium | LG C2 42 Inch 4K OLED |
July 25, 201213 yr Eight hours later I will fall out of bed and check in on my progress. Ha ha ha. So far I have about 70hrs on the current engines and they are in good condition. I've got the 377, but not with Accusim. It's a beautiful bird to fly in spite of its quirky looks. Mike Beckwith
July 25, 201213 yr Been still workin on the 111, haven't done tubes in along time. I welcome all to NE Wisconsin... FS RTWR SHRS F-111 JoinFS Little Navmap

July 30, 201213 yr Well the best part of my wish list is done for 2012. Spent 2 days at Airventure in KOSH.. Here are some links ( I hope they work ) for the un-professional photos I took along with some professional photos submitted through EAA. I hope to get some crappy "mini" videos up on you tube within the next few days.
