How can I figure out which AI traffic is around me?

Featured Replies

I am wondering how I can visualise which AI traffic is around me? Sure, I can hear those planes conevrsing with ATC, and I can see those planes that are less than 10 miles around me, but what about the rest? There used to be a neat little application in FS2002 called "AI Map", but I couldn't figure whether that also works in FS2004 or whether there is anything that does the same job of showing AI traffic from within FS. Would the Palm Spotter that comes with Ultimate Traffic do that, or does it only show those flights that have been compiled through UT?Thanks for any hints

Surprised no one has responded yet, so I'll give it a go:Palm spotter lists all traffic compiled with UT - it won't show plans you've edited (unless you compile them through UT, which is possible) or GA-traffic generated traffic. Also, it is just a list, so you need to go by time, read aircraft labels, and listen to ATC to figure out who's who. There is an application that comes with FSUIPC called TrafficLook which uses the FSUIPC to read from FS which planes are nearby. It sorts by distance, I believe, so you can tell from that, and it will show ALL aircraft that are AI.There are several TCAS gauges that you can get your hands on. I know that the VIPER f-16 has a working "radar" which shows nearby AI traffic. I'm sure there are others...That should get you started!Best,sg

Hello,I did install the Radar gauge coming from the F16 in several Panels and it is OK, you just have to load the gauge in the FS9 gauge folder and update your Panel.cfg of the selected aircrafts, of course you have to select where you want the gauge in the 2D panel.example gauge53=F16!Radar, 221,222,129,122Hope it helps

Hello mozart,Feel free to check out my post on "How to install Lee Hetherington's TCAS II 7.0 to an aicraft panel" if you want to. It's the best TCAS! Eric Marciano's F-16 Radar gauge is cool too. I added it to all my aircrafts panels and have used it for quite some time, but I'm going to replace it in all of them with Lee Hetherington's TCAS II 7.0. ;)For anyone who has seen the TCAS in the FFS/Aeroworx Super King Air B200 Lee Hetherington's TCAS II 7.0 is very similar to it. I believe I read in the manual that the TCAS in the B200 is TCAS I.Here's a link to my guide on how to install Lee's TCAS II 7.0 into a panel. Or just go into the 'MS Flight Simulator Tips and Tricks' subsection of this forum. I give the filename too so you can download it.http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...451&mesg_id=451Cheers, :)Jim

Thanks a lot everyone! Just a couple of questions before I pursue one of the options outlined by you:- the TCAS: what does it actually show (i.e., does it show callsign, flight number, aircraft type, departure and destination airport), and how far does the TCAS range? All planes within 10 miles? 20? 60?- the same questions for the Microsoft Traffic Toolkit: what does it show? Thanks again for all those that gave me these valuable hints!

sorry, just to add to my last post:I have tried the Microsoft Traffic Tool, but I was wondering whether there is any way I can see the callsign on the map and, what is even more important, whether there is any way I can see the map from WITHIN FS when I am in full screen mode.Any ideas? Thanks so much!

HI Mozart,The TCAS does not show callsign, flight number, aircraft type. You can optionally have those displayed by Flight Simulator itself as an aircraft label.I will just copy and paste descriptions and pics from Lee's Readme.htm and add a little of my own to it. If you download the gauge and read it, it explains much more and all will become clear. TCAS = Traffic Collision Avoidance System.---------------------AltitudesTraffic is displayed with one of four symbols, a two-digit relative altitude (e.g., +03 or -07) or a three-digit flight level (e.g., 250), and an arrow indicating a vertical rate of at least +/- 500fpm. The altitude is indicated in units of 100ft, with a + indicating above ourself and a - indicating below for relative altitudes. The altitude tag, relative or absolute, will be positioned above the symbol if the intruder is above own altitude or below the symbol if the intruder is below own altitude.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/80244.jpgThis pic above shows a potential threat that is just a little to my right and is 2,100 feet below me. Another aircraft that is not considered a potential threat is slightly to my left a few miles away and is 1,600 feet below my altitude.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/80247.jpgHere it looks like there is another aircraft a few miles away directly in front of and at the same altitude as me. A potential threat is slightly to my left, 800 feet below my altitude, and if I understand correctly is climbing at a vertical rate of at least + 500fpm. Definite threats turn into Red Squares and if you are in RA mode then you are shown a course of action to take in order to avoid collision.I hope that helps. And again, if you download the gauge and read Lee's Readme.htm it explains more than I have here.EDIT: By the way, the big white arrow pointer is your own aircraft's VS speed.Regards,Jim

Oh,I forgot to include something. The TCAS has a range of up to 40 miles. It doesn't actually help you figure out specifically which AI aircraft is around you, the labels can help you with that, but it certainly helps you in knowing where they're at around you so you can spot them more easily. You could also look into getting an addon call FS Trafficboard if you want to. It's at http://secure.simmarket.com/product_info.php?products_id=395This thing would probably show you everything you are wanting to know and more. It's shown as an FS2002 product. You can purchase it and get a registration code. Then to download the FS2004 version go here...http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?t=20990Regards,Jim

Jim,thanks a lot for your informative post. But I guess I was looking for something a little different - well, mind you, I think I`ll actually install the TCAS as you got me really interested in that, but I need to find another solution to visualise

Sure Chris... you're welcome for the little tutorial. :-beerchugI know labels don't show everything your looking for. I forget if it will shot the flight #. I know it doesn't show the dep/arr airport. But you know, that would be cool! :-cool We mention that as a feature we'd like to see in the next version of FS the next time one of those types of threads comes around!Cherrio,Jim

Chris,Have you tried Traffic Look which comes free with FSUIPC?

No, I haven't. I do have a registered version of FSUIPC and I have heard about this before, but never figured out what exactly it shows, whether it works from within FS and how I can install/use it.Maybe you can give me a hint as to what it does and where I can find a manual (although I assume that is included in FSUIPC)?Cheers

The F-16 guage that was mentioned earlier is available from Eric Marciano's ( http://emarciano.free.fr/ ) site and it will let you click on the aircraft visible on it's screen and will give info such as flight number, type, altitude, distance. Very nice :)

Actually the labels can display both of those items you mentioned. Open up your FS9.cfg and edit this section:[AContain]ShowLabels=1ShowUserLabel=0ShowLabelManufacturer=0ShowLabelModel=1ShowLabelTailNumber=1ShowLabelDistance=1ShowLabelAltitude=1ShowLabelAirline=0ShowLabelAirlineAndFlightNumber=1ShowLabelFlightPlan=1ShowLabelContainerId=0ShowLabelAirspeed=0ShowLabelHeading=0LabelDelay=1000LabelColor=FFFF9900ShowLabelFlightPlan will show the ICAO codes of the departing and destination airports. LabelDelay is how long the labels switch in milliseconds. I haven't tried ContainerId though.
