Re-installing FSX from scratch - Preparation ?

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm getting back into FS after a 6 month break from active flying due to house moves etc, but have decided to delete/uninstall my old FSX platform which was getting clogged-up after a great two year run.

I'm a bit out of touch with the latest and greatest tweak guides. Is Nick Needham's guide still the best one to use for prepping for a fresh install ?

Help appreciated.

thanks

eric

I think Nick's guide is the best for the initial install/reinstall. After installation you can look at other guides such as Srdan Word Not Allowed's guide pinned at the top of the Hardware Forum.

Best regards,

Jim

Just make sure after the uninstall of all addons and FSX itself that you manually go in and delete the left over folders. This will help with the reinstall not taking some left over bits (like scenery.cfg) from the old install.

If have not already uninstalled and you have the ability to backup all of your FSX folder plus the AppData folders, I think this is a good idea. I have gone back into my old folders a few times for various things....like repaints to copy over and then just copy the relevant section of the aircraft.cfg file. Also good for things you have probably forgotten about like the UI...core.dll etc.

Eric,

I have been simming for years and recently bought a new PC... The biggest thing I did to make this easy is make sure I had a copy of all of the software keys to the hundreds of $$$ in payware I have purchased. It took a good part of a day to build the PC, install the OS and FSX and just a few hours to re-installed ALL of my programs and payware...freeware etc...

Mark also has a good point. I snagged a bunch of texture and cfg files so I can re-install my VA repaints.

Best of luck!

Also - take your time! Just take it one step at a time and check results. Don't install 3 or 4 add-ons one right after another without verifying that all is well first. Takes longer but it could save you lots of time on the back end.
