MD-11 very Basic Check List & "Intro"-Flight

Featured Replies

Hi,

PDMG’s service to furnish its customers with two MD-11 tutorial flights will most likely be very much appreciated by most of you.

However, I got the feeling that a "short summary" of the essential basics out of the two tutorial flights is missing. I checked the web accordingly but couldn't find any of rather basic nature (that also explains some details, instead of listing the to do's like "CHK ENGINE / P-NF").

Thus, I decided to summarize the essence of the said materials and added some information I made with PDMG’s MD-11, or which I obtained from other resources (such as Boeing MD-11 materials) or a few flights in the MD-11 Simulator (CAE 7000 serires).

It's basically made for beginners who like to have something at hand when starting to fly this AC.

I added an illustrated glossary, too.

And I was the opinion of that an example for planning an IFR flight might also be helpful to understand the details the PMDG MD-11 consists of, in particular in regard of the CDU and its features like SIDs, STARs, Airways and so forth.

I tested the MD-11 Check List and I conducted the flight according to the flight planning example. From my perspective everything was clear and the outcome was fine. However, do not hesitate to provide feedback.

... and here are the materials as promised at the end of the "Intro-Flight" which include, from my opinion, also two very interesting airports. In particular, I would determine LSGS (Sion) as beeing interesting!

Well done, I like the layouts

The MD-11 is arguably the finest aircraft in the sky! It's just a shame it didn't sell too well :(

... I agree. The MD-11 is fine - in real as well as in the FSX. I also tried some other AC in FSX in the past, such as the A400, the Airbus-Series (both Wilco), the ATR-72 (Flight1)and the E-Jets (E175 & E195; Wilco). At the end it was the PMDG MD-11 that convinced me the most.

Thanks for the feedback, Graham 3278!

I would also be interested in how you like the flight I proposed at the end of the check list (LOWI/LSGS). I serached the web for challenging airports and of course found some lists consisting of some classic "dangerous" or "challenging" airports, e.g. VNLK, MHTG, SEQU, LPMA ... However, I couldn't find Sion / LSGS which - I think - is also pretty challenging, it particular if you set weather to "fog" and you have to rely on the instruments and follow it in the correct valley and than through the valley ...

Excellent work Tri-Jetting!

I also [put in optional profanity] love this aircraft!. Flying the NG in FS9 for over five years in a homebuilt cockpit:

I know it sounds ridiculous, but sitting in front of my 17" laptop screen on final with this bird. Vapp: 165KTS, short runway. Gets my adrenaline pumping much harder than it ever did in this contraption me and my father built.

I'm dead serious...

Very nicely done! :Applause: Makes me want to fly the MD-11 right now--but I have to go to work.

Joel Murray @ CYVR (actually, somewhere about halfway between CYNJ and CZBB)

Looks great, but I would need one of those built for the NGX, J-41, MD11, DC-9, 707, 727, MD82...etc. In my dreams...

I think the MD-11 has the best flight deck of any aircraft. The autopilot is no-nonsense yet very capable, the systems have just the right level of automation, but not too much. The AUTO/MANUAL switch next to each system is a work of genius. The icing on the cake is the aural alerting system that leaves no room for ambiguity - beats Boeings version any day (why the hell didn't they put it in the NG?!).

I wish PMDG would do the 717 - it is basically the MD-11 cockpit in the MD-82 airframe.

Best regards,

Robin.

Dear "Tri-Jetting"

I've just had a quick look at your documents and noticed a few items:

- HI-INT lights should NOT be switched on when starting taxi. These are intended ONLY when you get a clearance to either line-up or cross a runway. Therefore you'd switch it off after crossing a runway and of course after leaving a runway.

- You're after landing checklist is missing the APU

- The order of check items on take-off is not quite right. You should place the line where you switch on the landing lights BEFORE the line with the autoflight button.

- Using HDG mode after departure is of course possible, maybe you want to mention that if one departs using an SID one should arm NAV on ground.

That's it, as I said it was just a quick look at the pages.

Cheers,

Markus

Markus,

thank you a lot for providing some critical feedback on the BCL!

I changed the T/O Section whereas I put the "Lights On item" one line up as you mentioned which really makes sense ;-) !

In general, I would like to underline that the BCL is designed for "beginners" (and it obviously seems to me that you aren’t one) which I therefore underlined in the recitals of the BCL.

But subject to your feedback, I decided to upload an editable version of the BCL so everyone may customize it at discretion!

Subject to the detailed language of yours in regard of the other items:

I also added the "APU item" after landing. However, there’s no mandatory rule to do so.

And due to a good relationship to a German friend of mine, I attended 2 MD-11 legs with LH Cargo. The APU was defect and thus not available at all.

Since there were no spare parts available they used an external starter kit to get the engines running. At EDDF the ground crew was waiting for us to directly connect the AC to the generator. It works.

And I also attended a flight from LIN to FRA with an A321 ending up at Gate A26 where the Cpt. waited only a few seconds until the ext. pwr. was available – no APU. Basically, I believe that you’re right. However, this shouldn’t be a serious problem if it isn’t even one in the real world. ;-)

SID / AP & NAV: Sure, when whether flying FSX online with "real ATC" or offline without ATC / AI Traffic then one should fly the SID & switch on NAV as you said. But if flying with AI & FSX ATC & FSX IFR FP usually you’ll not fly the SID. Other experiences?

HI-INT: Perhaps have a look at the PMDG Tutorial flight No. 1, Page 20. And referring to the flight I mentioned above: They switch it on when push back is done. Basically, there’s also no mandatory rule for that or for refraining from that.

Best, yours TJ
