Need EXPERT opinion on FSX build and Monitor suggestion

Featured Replies

Used the great info on here to revive another PC for FSX, now building new

I need input on the specs below, and a monitor suggestion. Monitor should be 21, 23" or above, and a good value. Not breaking the bank. I'm dong single monitor with maybe track IR in the future, and want a nice 1 screen setup.

This budget rig will be running FSX STOCK! With a couple of Word Not Allowed's tweaks. Thats IT! So please keep that in mind. I"m not looking to run 747's in Paris all day in storms. I'm starting my instrument rating and want stock FSX to be butter smooth.

I'm also buying several Saitek items, yoke, radio stack, etc... so i can get a SSD, and upgrades later.

I was going to give you my opinion but since you clearly asked for EXPERT advice and I'm no expert, I guess I will keep it to myself. :P

I'd reccomend the 8GB GSkill RipJaws DDR3 2133 instead. - About a 10% improvement in FPS over the 1600RAM.

Also, I'd reccomend the newer, faster, more effiecient GTX660Ti.

Thanks for the feedback

Bimmer, it was satire, since nearly everyone on here know's their stuff, everyone except me.

Ben, The Ram i have is free via Newegg promo.

Is there a better graphics card than the 560ti for not that much more. I'll be buying a whole bunch of gear at once so every buck counts. 560ti should be good for stock FSX don't you think? That extra $120-140 is being used for yoke and switch panel now.

I'm willing to compromise for a while and upgrade mem and graphics card later.

Stick with the 2500k or go i5 3570k? i like idea of 2500k running cooler, or not needing extensive extra cooling gear.

What type of resolution and monitor setup do you guys run?

Hi Greg,

I've got a 23.6" Philips HDTV running at 1920x1080. 23.6" might not seem big at first, but once you put the thing on your desk, it is more than big enough! :P (I'll post a pic if you want)

I have this one, it has AutoContrast, which works well with FSX IMO, and it is reasonably priced:

Wiebe if you could post a pic that'd be great.

I think 23" size is where I'll end up, running at 1920x1080

560 TI will do just fine for you. Think I paid C note for mine off ebay 2 months ago. Works great! Good Luck with your build.

To give you an even better perception of the size, walk into an Apple store. This display is halfway between the smallest iMac and the largest iMac.

Hi Greg,

I've been very happy w/ this screen from Dell, which gets 4.4 of 5 stars, has 178 degree viewing angles, 1920x1200 resolution, fully adjustable height/tilt/etc, and just needs a minor color adjustment which is no buggy, and the price is good for what you are getting:
