considering buying X-Plane 10

Yeah guess you can't really compare payware and freeware. Maybe I was expecting a bit much from the x737.

No but I have XPX and believe that I've given it a fair shake, my conclusion is that I'm not yet ready to make the full switch. I'd prefer to wait until more 3PD's get on board with more complex aircraft available. I'm really interested to see how the IXEG 737 CL will go.

Mike, that's the whole point! It isn't Laminar's fault if the 3PDs don't play fair. Some people have no interest in XPX's success. I thought this would have surfaced long ago...

Now with Prepar3D they probably don't have any reason to go to XPX. I notice Carenado have pretty much all their aircraft available for all platforms, I still find VFR flying in GA aircraft to be a lot more enjoyable in XPX than FSX.

Since most of my sim flying is GA, it's really back & forth. Scenery is the main issue at this point. IMO............the best flight models for either sim are a wash. And since XP "feels" more like a fluid magic carpet ride to me................than actual flight does, I don't get a better sense of flight either. So it's a wash again. XP just needs more scenery. I suppose that someday it will come. Looking forward to it, as I enjoy these new XP 3rd party scenery videos that pop up every few days.

I agree totally-there are good flight models for the "ancient" sim and there are good ones for xplane.

As a GA flyer even after flying almost exclusively ifr for 20 out of 24 years scenery is paramount on creating that "wow" or "really happening" moment on a flat screen motionless computer monitor.

"ancient"

By today's standards Geof (technological age), FSX is the Dodo bird. Last seen on some old Intel 2 core computers. Not only is it ancient, it's of the past, before time was recorded and no one really knows if it really existed..Just%20Kidding.gif

I agree-let's get xplane up to dodo standards and then we can all move on. I'd like to-I have a considerable investment in xplane 10.

You probably don't...more likely invested in FSX...lol

Actually I have hardly even opened up fsx in 2 years. I have xplane 10 much more-to check on the "improvements" but I haven't found enough to keep me going. Aerofly has been more fun but not serious enough.

Know it is hard to hear an unbiased voice. Yes more invested in fsx over 6 years-but I have only had xplane 10 for a year-and $500 is more than I ever invested in fsx in one year.

..and yes now that I am not rw flying I really need a good desktop experience-I will fight for that.

Know for the zealots not want they want to hear and that is ok-except such attitude does not move simming forward. Spoken like an old ^&*^ that has been around...

I'm not a zealot....just fed up with FSX. Haven't uninstalled it but have not fired it up in a year. Since I'm not spending as much on add-ons, I'm actually saving a lot of money. We get to go down to the Caribbean twice a year now! lol

Well I beat you-have hardly fired it up fsx in two years except when I moved to my new area of the country and photoscenery was available for it which taught me its subtleties. Haven't bought anything for it in a long while other than my rw plane-the milvitz b55 which is the best rendition of any beechcraft on a sim on the planet.

Still not sure what this has to do with deficiencies in xplane that I would think ALL simmers would like to see improved.

I'm really over Fsx-are you? I really am...

I won't pretend XPX is perfect, no way. From my perspective however, Laminar is approachable and can be persuaded to change. You're bound to catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Well honey hasn't made it-how about we just be honest about what it needs.

From what I understand when FSX first came out there wasn't any hardware around at the time capable of running it at a decent standard. It's only been over the past couple of years that the hardware has caught up. In saying that though MS have always been notorious for writing software including OS's with incredibly 'bloated' code making it very resource intensive. XPX natively supports multi-core processors and now also 64-bit so I guess in that sense it does make FSX look a bit ancient.

But I still think that it's all about the 3PD's as they're the ones with the resources to create the complex aircraft. Sure, not everyone's into that sort of thing but there's probably still a fair chunk of a market out there for that.

As for the scenery, with HDR turned on the visuals are absolutely mind-blowing in XPX. My main gripe at the moment would probably be the airports, I've been adding scenery as I go depending on which I airport I want to fly from/to, but that's quite a tedious task having to populate every single airport I want to fly to...

I did fly the iFly 737 and enjoyed that very much, as I also enjoyed the PMDG J-41

The folks at x737 are working on a 3D cockpit that will be tremendous--and did I say, free?

On the X-Plane payware front there is an upcoming Saab 340 that I'm saving for--so I can fly some Aleutian island hops in style (and Aleutian flying in Xplane is absolutely stunning and hair raising!)

Once the "high altitude distance visibility/blurring" issue is solved in X-Plane, I'll likely not think of FSX ever again....so sorry, it just kills my machine (only a year old) and I can't run my second monitor with charts, etc...

Keep trying with X-Plane...it's good now and will continue to get better if folks keep pushing Austin :)

That would be interesting to see. VC is just something that I can't fly without.

From what I've read and seen about the IXEG 737 that will most likely be what will make me seriously consider taking up X-Plane full time (and maybe better airports out-of-box). I updated my install last night to the latest 64-bit beta but unfortunately it doesn't work properly with the 777. I'll run a second install tonight with 10.10 as I haven't flown it for a while and all this talk of XPX has piqued my interest again.
