considering buying X-Plane 10

Featured Replies

Hi, I have been using Microsoft FSX for some while now but am now looking at X-Plane 10.

I find it an interesting and comprehensive simulator but just using the demo version the scenery is rubbish - is there nothing like the real scenery for FSX for this program and if so where can I see a demo of it.

I have tried YouTube but all the demos on there seem to use the same unattractive scenery as the demo of X-Plane 10 has.

I would welcome any comments on the scenery available.

Thanks

if you're looking for nice awesome realistic ground textures than stay with fsx. I only like the road/traffic system and the new 777 in xplane10. You also have to remember that xp10 is not a finished product yet, it gets updated every month and all the missing features will come one day. Also xp10 just got updated to 64bit and its more smooth and faster than fsx on my pc. Also the clouds in xp10 don't move like in fs9/fsx. I use both sims and love them equally. :drinks:

Like Flash said, XP is being continually updated which is a good thing. And if you search these forums for videos and pictures of what scenery's ppl get in XP 10 (like this http://forum.avsim.n...-64bit-scenery/) it's starting to look really good.

Out of the box, what you see is what you get. With the exception of mountainous areas which are naturally beautiful, the cities are as-is, the airports are as-is, and the demo essentially IS what X-Plane can do right now. There are some utilities which can import some MSFS airports and scenery into X-Plane, but it isn't a compelling reason to make the X-Plane purchase as it is not 100% functional. There are also copious airport freeware downloads, but quality is not consistent. The overall "world" is what it is, and it's a bone of contention for many folks these days.

The fact that X-Plane is continually developed is only as good as what is actually being worked on. The pace is very very slow, as they only have a few developers on the payroll, and we've seen very limited scenery improvements since X-Plane 10 was released a year ago.

They seem to have grand plans to improve the scenery world in XP10, but there are NO GUARANTEES EVER in the world of X-Plane. If you purchase X-Plane 10, be certain to understand that. Make your purchase based on what is available today, without expectations for tomorrow... it's one of the only ways to remain happy with the X-Plane development culture which has disappointed so many would-be X-Plane users.

If scenery is a primary interest of yours, keep the demo handy but hold off on your purchase. The demo is updated along side the full version, so you will see improvements as they happen. Once X-Plane reaches a pleasing level for you, you should pull the trigger.

Thanks for the coments, all very helpful.

I thought I had seen some real scenery for sale like that in FSX bt maybe was mistaken.

The last suggestion is what I think I will go with keep the demo and keep an eye on updates.

For what it's worth after a few uses I don't feel that the ATC is as good as that in FSX but again have only used it a few times, it may well grow on me.

ATC in xp10 is very Bad :( ..............Papa

I ditched Windows for my Mac Pro some 6 years ago and lost access to FS2004. I found out about X-Plane 10 last week and am enjoying being back in the cockpit. I can't use the full resolution renditions due to my Mac being a few years old and lacking the performance of the latest versions. However, using my ATI 5770 graphics card I have been impressed with what I tried so far. I agree the ATC is annoyingly imprecise and nagging. This a much better option than trying to run FSX with Windows under Pallarels.

Greggerm, you stated things very well. As for me, I purchased xplane about a year ago and found it to be extremely deficient in many aspects, which include scenery, third party enhancement availability, ATC and AI, and a lack of development resources to transform this app into something that the general public would accept. As this is the case, I would imagine that a lot of customers who purchased xplane have lost interest, as have a lot of potential customers.

I remember Austin in an interview a few months ago mentioning how good the scenery is and how complete the experience is. In my opinion, I think Austin, who is the guy who sets the course for the sim, has a very different vision for what a simulator should be than your average simmer. With that, I do not see xplane ever truly being in the same space that microsoft's six year old version is in. In my very humble opinion, I think Austin lives in a different planet than the majority of flight sim enthusiasts and he has stated in many ways that he is happy with his simulator and does not care what other people think. And that is a shame.

very true, this week i went back to fsx and all my payware and it feels so alive compared to xp10. xp10 is going into the recycle bin until Austin completes it.

Where I live, even if you install expensive add-ons, FSX looks dead and empty compared to X-Plane.

Did you ask Steve Ballmer to complete FSX ? So why do you ask Austin Meyer to complete X-Plane ? ^_^

Just install add-ons !!! :P

I took the plunge a few months ago and got XP10 based on the demo version I played around with. I spent a good 2 weeks on it to get a good feel for it and in many ways was very impressed with what it had to offer including the simplicity of the install as well as add-ons, flight model, RW weather out-of-the-box etc. Since I'm a big fan of tube liners I went ahead and got the 777 which is probably the best thing available for X-Plane at the moment.

Unfortunately the lack of default scenery particularly airports began to bother me as well as the 'plausible' environment in cities around Australia where I live as the cities looked nothing like they do in the real world. I did download numerous freeware add-ons I found for some of the airports and they do look really good but aren't particularly functional as majority of the parking bays can't be used, I primarily fly on VATSIM and need to have accurate parking spaces at airports.

I ended up going back to FSX and realised how much I missed all my add-on aircraft including PMDG NGX, 747, JS41 etc. Even though the 777 for XP10 is great and shows how much potential the platform has it just doesn't compare to what's available on FSX. I've now invested in FTX Australia scenery and don't think I'll be going back to X-Plane for a very long time until things really improve, it's a shame as I really had high hopes for it and thought it was going to be the next big sim.

I'll probably still fire it up every now and then to install updates and see how things are coming along.

Well I've installed every available add on for my area of the world and the landclass is not even close for my area , and the airport environment looks like something from the 1990's (bare), and there is only one season depicted-also going way back in sim history. Me-I'd rather embrace the positives of this program and lobby to fix its ' deficiencies rather than try to Deny its' deficiencies. Let's get some wordwide airport buildings, good landclass and 4 seasons and then no one will be debating anything! Simmers and users of all sims for the past 10 years kinda expect these features for good reason that they have been standard for quite a long time. The potential is clearly there to be a killer sim, but as I have councelled students in my walk of life-potentIal isn't worth diddly till it manifests! Hoping for a complete manifesting-the latest 64 beta is a huge step in te right direction.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Maybe I'll do the same for FSX, installing every year the latest trial version to see how things are coming along:

I'll still continue to have X-Plane installed as I believe it has potential, it's just not quite as complete as I hoped it would be. I spent quite a while with it and gave it good shot, I've made my decision to stick with FSX based on my requirements and what I look for in a simulation. Everyone's requirements and expectations are different.

very true also, i got bored at looking at 1 season and empty airports at major cities, even payware for xp10 has no moving vehicules at the airports like fsx AES/GSX. XP10 road traffic and night time flying is awesome and totally better than fsx.
