Which nvidia GTX 680?

Featured Replies

Hi All

I am planning on buying a 680 in the next few weeks.

Can somebody please help me decide which one is the best for fsx?

I am unsure about the following 2 things,

6208MHz GDDR5 and GPU 1084MHz values.

All cards, even from same manufacturer have different values for these two settings.

I understand the higher these are the better the card should be-the confusion is some expensive cards have lower values for these.

It would be nice if somebody could recommend a particular card in the lower price band.

I am in UK.I am thinking of buying from scan.

Does someone have one to sell?

I am looking forward to your help.

EVGA FTW is a great one. The difference is some come at stock speeds while some are factory over clocked which is the reason for the price difference as well as the clock speed discrepancies.

Really the big names are all good for the most part. I love my Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670. Over clocked it heavily and stays ice cold and quiet.

I would choose EVGA because they are reliable and the support team is good, you get your answer in two or three business days.

GTX 680 overclocks its self when running at maximum speed so you don't really have to buy a card that is super clocked by the manufacturer or you overclock it by your self.

EVGA is the best out there... Customer support is fantastic and they always help out if run into any issues.

Many thanks everyone,it's going to be EVG.

EVGA for the win. Zotac tech support is a nightmare. It took me three weeks of constant contact to get an RMA when my card went down. After sending it in and waiting another month I contacted them again and was told they could not find my card and would contact me back in 24 hours. 48 hours later I contacted them and was told the card was in the mail. Two weeks later I get the package, open it, and find a nice little letter that explains nothing was wrong with my card. I take the card out and check the serial number, it doesn't match; not my card. I check the Zotac site to register the new card and am told this card belongs to someone else. Of course I am sure at this point they screwed up and sent someone else's card to me. I call Zotac and am told that is a refurbished card sent in replacement of my card that had nothing wrong with it. They registered the card to me but I was plenty upset. They did offer to give me another RMA so I could send that card in and they would send out a new card but I refused. At that point I had put up with enough of their silliness.

Give ASUS a look as well. I purchased the ASUS GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP a few weeks ago. Faster than the reference 680 cards but cost is high and the card takes up three slots and is very long. I had to move a HDD in order to get it to fit in the case.

I researched which 660 to buy and according to Tom's Hardware and Maximum PC, the Gigabyte 660 OC is a best buy for sure. You will likely see see no differences in FSX performance between a 660 and a 680 and when you can get a 660 OC for $199.00 you can't go wrong. I previously ran a EVGA 480 and the new 660 OC provides higher resolution which I needed, dramatically improved runway and marker lights, etc and better frames in heavy clouds.

Don't expect much in the way of general frame rate improvements or smoothness, however, as we all know FSX is a CPU reliant program.

At high AA a 670 or 680 will make a joke if a 660 non Ti.

I saw the difference myself in FSX and there was about a 10% improvement with a 680. It didn't seem worth double the price. The other consideration is that there are so may possible variations in FSX that can effect frames that a direct comparison is very difficult and not usually accurate. All I know is that the 660 OC for $200 is an amazing card. If anyone wants to spend $400+, then I'm sure a 680 is the way to go.

580, 660 is way higher than 10% only.

Can be found in Dazz's GPUMark Thread. IIRC, the increase is something close to 50%.

All true. I'm only saying that for the average simmer, the 660 T or OC is a bargain at just over $200. If $ is not an issue then for sure the 680 would be great. The decision shouldn't be made on frame rates as that's the CPUs job as we know in FSX. A 680 over a 660 won't provide much advantage with that. I haven't seen the difference with SGSS but I believe you guys are right about that.

I am running 3 LCD's at 5760 x 1080 so would I really see a benefit of high anti aliasing with such a high resolution. Just asking.
