December 3, 201213 yr Good afternoon, My question is: At what distance (in daylight and good visibility conditions) should a runway and papi lights be visible (drawn) in the sim? I am asking it because my experience is that for most sceneries (pay or free) at least 10 miles out I can see the runway with enough clarity to turn off the A/P and go for a visual and manual approach, but with Aerosoft's Madrid-Barajas Mega-Airport (which I must say is a piece of art) the runways only appear (pop up) at about 3 miles from touchdown (that's only 1,25 minutes at 145 kts). Before that distance, only a blurry shadow shows in front on my windshield. Any expert opinion ?. Thanks. Jose Luis. December 4, 201213 yr Does Aerosoft recommend any FS settings? The pop-up distance can be set in the FS9.cfg file. That short a distance sounds odd. You might want to check out Aerosoft's scenery forums. If you register an Aerosoft product you get access to FAQs and service packs plus release notes specific to that product.

December 4, 201213 yr I am not sure whether FSX settings have FS9 counterparts, but have you tried adjusting your level of detail setting? If it is already set to the highest possible, you could edit the LOD entry manually in the FS9 configuration file. I forget the specific name of the entry, but it should have texture and LOD in it. Large level of detail equates to 4.5 in the entry, but most people do not recommend setting it to over 6.5. If you run into issues with higher settings, revert back to a lower number. I personally stick with 4.5 in FSX.

December 4, 201213 yr Where? Being a "Weather enthusiast" I set my sight distance in..>>> Menu > Weather > User Defined Weather > Custom Weather > [visibility]. I adjust my sight distance depending upon the type of weather I set up in the options menu, remembering the type of visibility I observe during real-world flights in the my local flying clubs Cessna 150/152.... Rain, Fog, Mist, Low cloud, Smoke, Dust, etc, etc... For realism I set my "clear" sight distance between 5 and 10 Miles, (sometimes as low as 3 miles, VFR permitting!), for overall realism, depending upon local conditions, (local weather forecast). "Unlimited visibility" is seriously unrealistic! Paul ......a keen Weather Watcher!... :Big Grin: ...!
December 4, 201213 yr In FS9 there is a setting that supports the maximum distance allowed for scenery objects LOD to occur. In other words it allows the maximum distance from the aircraft the highest LOD scenery objects to "pop-up" to higher detail. I'd have to search for the FS settings whicgh I can't get to. Either way, that's why I suggested the OP go to the Aerosoft scenery forum plus his particular product, service packs, etc., to see if other users were complaining. Here's a link to mega airport forums: http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/forum/343-fsx-fs2004-mega-airports/ The usual references refer to cloud objects but either the same setting or a similar one would affect other objects. Not being a scenery designer I'm not fully versed on this but it has been approached before. I don't recall if a scenery designer has control of how many different LOD steps can be assigned to an object. I suggest a test be conducted with just FS9 running in the clear weather theme and no weather app that might apply a haze layer and visibility smoothing. A slow VFR prop GA should be used for final to eliminate pc performance issues dealing with rendering time. The instances I am referring to occur with complaints regarding terrain popping up and horizon smoothing.
