US Airways makes bid for AA

Featured Replies

Zach,

That has already been decided. American Airlines will be the surviving carrier. The corporate offices will move to Dallas. It's just a matter for the money people to work it out. this will be my 4th merger in 33 years. Thank God I only have three years to retirement.

I see. Thanks Mike (as always)! Admittedly, I've forgotten the details of the merger and haven't discussed it in months.

But my favorite airline over the past few years is Hawaiian.

I am based in Honolulu so I commute from Seattle on them a couple times a month. They are my first choice to commute with because they pay their people the highest, are the only airline in the country to still serve a meal and drinks, and they are always on time!

Up until yesterday, there hasn't been anything to report. All parties were under an NDA. These things are usually great for the shareholders and executives. Not so much for the line employees.

Mike, you know as well as anyone that the rumor last year mirrored the "official" bid/offer released yesterday. As for the rest, good luck (not the first time I've wished you luck).

Imagine that....What's in the water over there in Hawaii, that sound like common sense to me,

Proper wages, a meal, drinks, on time......Wow, what a novel concept. Take note other airlines

Haha, that's why they are expanding at breakneck pace. They are a tiny airline compared to their competitors but they are crushing them right now. Their CEO seems to be on the right track balancing rapid expansion and continuing with their great customer care. I have a friend that is flying the A330 their and to say that I am jealous of the quality of life he has now is an understatement!

If this goes thru,I will feel sorry for USA people, after what AA did to TWA folks.

Amazing how that works. Some call it Karma, I call it life.

I'm not sure why it would qualify as Karma. Did a US Airways employee do something to you? Actually, the laws in the US have changed since the AA\TWA merger so it may not be quite as bloody. That being said, there certainly will be job losses. Rumor has it,that there will be an announcement in January. We'll see.

Nope....Just another comment over the fancy interweb. I am not a believer in Karma, reason why I put it that way.

Even with changes to the law a merger is not very comfortable for those involved. My sister-in-law with United has been shuffled around a few times now and is miserable. That is life.

There are two certainties in an airline merger. !. the CEO's and executives will make out like bandits. 2. The employee's futures will be uncertain and the number ones really don't care. As I stated in an earlier post, this will be my 4th merger in 33 years so I feel your sister-in-law's pain.

Thanks for that....I will say this would be the primary reason why I moved to the bottom of the world. Different culture down here as I used to work in manufacturing in North America, another industry with endless mergers and downsizings and closings. Not fun for anyone.

Jim,

You've got that right.

Mathew,

How does one pick up and move to New Zealand? Are you required to have a needed skill and a job in place before you are allowed to emigrate?

It is a points system and I applied under the skilled trades and when I was 39 (just before 40, with age you have less points). For me it was straight forward.

I applied through the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, DC and it took them 3 weeks to process the paper work, they slide a visa entry into your passport and you have a year to arrive in NZ. When you arrive your permanent residency begins from that point on.

I do have a lot of friends here from the USA. We are a rather large community in and around Wellington. A lot of us moved for many of the same reasons but life here is very laid back by comparison. You should see the pub here on Superbowl Monday because for us Kickoff is Monday Afternoon at 1:00 pm, For me that is Christmas Day

Here is the point system as per the NZ Government, You can do a free online assesment:

http://www.visaburea...int-system.aspx

You can also do investors visa's which has been a good option for some of my friends:

If you are serious about it I highly recommend it, and Los Angelas is only 13 hour flight away, so you are not that far really
