X Plane 10 - Questions before buying!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've built my new computer system now (i5 3570k, ATI 7770 graphics etc etc) and am wanting to go all x-plane as i think in the future it will be the only one any good.

I have a few questions that i would love an answer to, if somebody could be so kind...

  1. In FSX you can have the interior view as though you are sitting in the seat and if you press the - key you can zoom out so you can see more of the dash. Is this possible in xp10?

  2. In FSX you can have a view where you are at the tail of the aircraft and if you turn you still keep the plane straight in view , in xplane it moves about so you have to keep centering it, if you know what i mean, Can you adjust it so it doesnt?

  3. Does trackir work in xp10?

  4. Ive heard that you cant have seperate displays, just displaying the instruments for instance. Is this true? If so why would they leave that out??

  5. In your opinion , would xp10 be good for a home cockpit eventually?

Thanks

Matt

Matt, yes you can zoom out, yes TIR works, there are many camera views so I am sure something can be done if it doesnt already exist re that view.

You should get the demo, it would allow you to check for all of these features.

As far as extra displays, you are correct that you can't do some of the stuff you can do in FSX, i.e. add another panel to the screen and shift it to another screen, e.g. gps, mip, radio stack etc.

This is a bit of a problem for me as well. You can get external software that will do this just as you can for FSX. Most of the larger cockpits for FSX go this way I believe, i.e. they interface a seperate gauge package and run that on another monitor. This can be done and xplane has a fsuipc compatible plugin so many packages that interface with fsx via fsuipc should work on xplane as well.

Depending what you want to do for your cockpit xplane can do it today but it can't do it quite as simply as fsx can.

Not without a separate computer.

Hit Shift + 8 (or "View -> View is Chase" from the menu) for that.

It does.

Ive heard that you cant have seperate displays, just displaying the instruments for instance. Is this true? If so why would they leave that out??

It's true.

Not without a separate computer.

Was he not just referring to being able to zoom out? What is another computer needed for?

My bad - I thought he wanted to have internal and external view at the same time. Didn't read carefully enough I guess.

Yeah i mean to be able to zoom out a bit to show the dash more. Ive zoomed out as much as i can and its still nowhere near as much as you can in fsx

It wasn't left out necessarily, but rather a limitation of the technology they've chosen to use.

X-Plane uses OpenGL as its graphics language in order to support cross-platform functionality (Windows, Mac, Linux). There is apparently a limitation in OpenGL which prevents it from rendering different "scenes" and outputting them to different monitors. X-Plane CAN use multiple monitors, but only if you use them all to display the same view.... such as a three-monitor panorama out the front window, or a three-monitor panorama out the side, or a three monitor panorama in spot view... etc. etc..

As others have said, you would need another computer, running another instance of X-Plane, networked together, to have a second view on a monitor... kind of defeats the purpose, unless you're rigging up a truly professional sim setup.

Ye' olde MSFS uses DirectX as its graphics language, which does support more robust multi-monitor/multi-display capabilities. Of course, DirectX is only available on Windows, and would prevent Laminar Research from selling the sim to Mac and Linux users.

That's the ultimate reason for such features not being included.

There is an option within the rendering settings in which you can increase or decrease the Field Of View, I think this is what you are looking for. Once this is set to your liking, you can use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

Windows 11 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Asus Prime Z690 | i7 12700KF HT | DeepCool LS520 SE | MSI 5070 Ti Ventus OC | 64GB G.Skill XMP II | Lian Li 216 LANCOOL RGB | TrackIr v5 | Honeycomb Alfa - Bravo - Charlie | MSFS 2024 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Curved 27" MSI | JBL Quantum 810

Perhaps worth noting that all of the high-end payware X-plane aircraft are VC-only, so in most cases there really _aren't_ any gauges to display on a 2nd monitor.

You dont necessarily need another computer but you will need some more software that will render the gauges for you on another display, running on the same computer. It talks to xplane to get the information.

This is how most small cockpits work on a single pc with other sims as well.

Matt,

Under Rendering Settings, I have adjusted the Lateral Field of View where I been able to see the rudder pedals way in front of me and

then use the mouse wheel to zoom in but I think that was in 3D only if memory serves me correct. Like Pirata said, set it once for your

liking and then will be fine for most aircraft.

Also under Rendering Options (special view Settings) there is a block to tick for Draw IOS on second Monitor on Same Card, Maybe someone can enlighten us as to what this does. Although I should get off of top dead center and look in the manual.......!

I am still trying to figure out how to pan down in the cockpit to see the rest of the dash.

Xplane 9 was easy with the down arrow, but this doesn't work. And the dash I can see at the top suffers incredible lack of clarity/resolution as compared to XP-9,

As for Open GL, sorry but if the Windows platform has something like  Direct-X, and if it does have a better rendering capability, then it should be programmed to auto-detected and be used.

Cheers,

Ron

You are missing the point that Windows is only one of three plattforms and on Mac Os X and Linux ther is no Direct X. Two different graphic engines on the other hand would mean two very different code bases. A very bad idea. Especially when Mac Os X is the main development plattform.

Ant the down arrow works in the 3D cockpit without any problems.

Pan up/down in XP10 is R and F I believe--if not its one of the ones next to those. You must be in 3D cockpit view first.

R and F, it should at least be j and k to make it consistent with the vi editor.
