Keeping 'Volatile' information in the CFG

Featured Replies

TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=

LOD_RADIUS=

etc

I named this type of information volatile because much like 'volatile memory' it resets once you've made a change in the FSX Options panel.

I think I've found a less painful way to keep these settings without restarting FSX.

Step 1|

Load up FSX and head straight to the Settings panel, then hit the save button to the bottom left corner.

Save this CFG file as whatever you want to...

Step 2|

Open up your Documents folder and browse for the Flight Simulator X Files folder. Open that and the saved CFG file would be in there, open it up.

Looks familiar? It's like a condensed fsx.CFG file, much like a template that will re-write the actual cfg file when you load it in FSX.

Step 3|

Change all 'volatile' information to your likings.

For example, Mcphat Paints and REX Clouds, change the TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024 to TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096,

It's just like changing it on the actual copy of the fsx.CFG file just that since this is a 'template' that can be loaded directly into FSX, you won't have to reload your Sim after changing something in the Options folder.

Step 4|

In the FSX Settings menu, select Load, and load your modified CFG.

This will overwrite the real fsx.cfg, on the spot.

This should eliminate the need for you having to restart fsx.

Note

If you change anything in the Options menu of FSX, you must also make these changes in the saved cfg file.... Or when you Load the saved cfg file your settings will reflect that of a previous state. Alternatively you can save the changes made, then open the cfg file you saved, and change the volatile information back once more, then finally reload the saved file.

Hope I helped, Merry Christmas guys.

This is just begging for a little FSX Utility program, that runs before FSX loads the fsx.cfg file, and makes sure a list of Changes, (in a separate (say) Changes.cfg) are always included correctly in the main fsx.cfg, before FSX loads it.

Would make a nice Stocking Stuffer !!

I was considering writing up a code that does this once ran.

Then it hit me that I had no idea how to do this.

I think FSX GO by ORBX does this perfectly.

Yep been doing this since FSX and tweaks came out...

I've got a handful of saved .cfg's

I use a simple bat file to copy in my 'real' cfg file and then load fsx.

Yep, me too. Copies a backup of standard.xml at the same time.

Most of these settings (not all) can be set now with FSDT's Addon Manager. It's main fnction is to mange and validate their addon products In adition you can sett undocumented (Volatile) settings. When set there, it will force FSX to load them. I believe the ones mentioned are there, the one that's not I'd like to see is CloudDensity. Ther Addon Manger is a free utility and does not have to have any of their other products to use it in this way.

Thanks

Tom
