More on DCS World....

Featured Replies

Now that I have turned into an almost full DCS World addict (there is still Silent Wings for the peaceful, even if sometimes challenging soaring flights..., and ELITE for the IFR proficiency :-) I am glad to see that the attention of various 3pds is turning towards this rather promissing simulation platform.

Is good to know that Iris Simulations is involved in a few projects, and also very good to read this post at the AVSIM PMDG forums:

For me the choice is made. Really no point in starting/installing back any of my other sim experiences of the year... and really regreting having spent my bucks in a couple of them :-(

Keep an eye on the future developments at DCS World. Quality, Realism, Accuracy, Detail are just a few of the words that come to my mind when I think DCS World :-)

Just imagine how good it would be to have PMDG developing for DCS World, probably a few military heavies, but also Real Air Simulations, and A2A Simulations... Orbx for scenery areas, etc... There is a whole World waiting for 3pds at DCS :-)

I didn't realize that DCS was so well regarded until recently. I also didn't realize that people like RSR were big fans of it either. Thanks for the link to that thread. It certainly is at that level of complexity. I'm still working my way up the long learning curve of the A-10--I'm finding that a major part of the curve is making all my fingers work in the correct sequence on the throttles! It is hard for me to get a Maverick off in any timely fashion because I'm all thumbs and chances are I'll move the wrong little Chinese style of hat button.

I'm actually very surprised that the likes of A2 and Milviz aren't in on developing for this simulation. It would seem like such a natural transition. I guess it comes back to that flight sim politics thing. I had actually assumed years ago that A2A was developing their own combat simulation, and who knows, maybe they still are. Now that I have DCS, it is honestly going to be hard for me to buy any more high-performance military planes for FSX no matter how good. The allure of fully working weapons systems is just too much.

I don't have any airplanes from Iris or Razbam. I always assumed, perhaps mistakenly since I've never had any, that they were more like Carenado in that they are said to make a decent plane, but you can't really compare them to the true "Giants" of Ultra-realism. Is that correct? Can we assume that the airplanes they are developing for DCS will be in keeping with the high standard of the A-10C or Black Shark?

I had never really thought about PMDG developing anything for DCS before now. With the exception of a KC-something, I'm not even creative enough to imagine what kind of plane they would ever make, even on the rare chance of it happening.

DCS is certainly a nice environment to go simming in. It can be a bit strange with the mix of current aircraft but that's only a concern for multiplayer and multiplayer is going very well on the platform anyway, at least with the squadron I fly with. Some aircraft dont have an ideal role mixed with others but that doesnt take away from how good they fly if you just want to lfy them like any other civ sim.

It's also nice that it is fairly configurable, plays very well for cockpit builders with good option there and performance is pretty good.

I have all the modules except for the FC3 addon as the fidelity for those is a little under what I want in a sim like that.

I purchased LOMAC...wow nearly 9 years ago now...and really loved the sim. It needed some polishing, but overall a lot of fun. When FSX came out I was all over it.

Several weeks ago I read a post here about DCS and went to check it out. What an amazing transformation on many fronts.

I've downloaded the free DCS world and SU-25. Tried to purchase the A-10 but there were server issues so I'll try again tomorrow.

With their upcoming Flaming Cliffs with F-15, Mig-29, SU-27...I think I've found my FSX replacement. If many of the top 3rd party developers start releasing titles for DCS World, there will be some serious growth within that company.

Philip, their site is a PITA with purchasing. I am not sure if you had the issue where you are logged in and then appear not to?

Try a different broswer the server has an issue with cookies. I have heard putting your browser in to private mode helps as well.

On special at the moment for $16 it's hard to beat. If you use steam you can also purchase it there for $16 on special just dont use the steam install. Download the normal install from digitalcombatsimulator.com and use the serial you got from the steam purchase.

If you like Helo's then BS2 is on special at the moment as well for $24.

Hmmm....I bought the A-10 last night and installed DCS. So far its not running very smooth. I get pauses and stutters like every 10 sec or so, the A-10 VC looks pretty low res on my 1600x2560 30" monitor, and the terrain in mountain's seems to lack detail not to mention the low lands look over saturated to me. I got lots to figure out here. What are some of the best sites to help get this tuned up and running smooth? I'm on Win 7x64, Sandy @ 5ghz, and EVGA Geforce 670 with 4gb ram. I was expecting better performance and visuals out of the box, but obviously I'm doing something wrong.

Chris, on your configuration I would be expecting 50 frames. Not sure how many more but it should run fairly smooth.

If things are not running too well you could try turning off HDR from the graphics options, turn off fxaa, water on low and heat blur off.

I can't account for why your cockpit would look low res, it should look fairly good. All your other settings should be on high, e.g. textures etc.

The resolution you are running should not be an issue for DCS. In fact stutters every 10 seconds or so is not indicative of an issue with the setting I suggested. I would have a read in this thread on the ED forums.

Yeah, I've commented on other threads about how well DCS runs right out of the box, but I was making those statements relative to setting up FSX and trying to figure out all the performance tweaks for that. I've had it for about a month and I am still a raw beginner with the sim, but I think I've nailed my configuration settings down. It didn't happen over night and I too was concerned about the visual quality at first. Now my panels are pretty clear, although some of the best FSX addons probably exceed the A-10 or P-51 in that regard (imho).

I don't have much to add to the suggestions above, only to emphasize turning off the mirrors and TSAA in DCS. Turn your shadows and sun-on-panel effect to medium. Tune things through your video performance panel or Nvidia inspector. I'm using 8x AA (not, 8xs as you would in FSX), and 16x AF, and Off/use Multisampling Transparecy AA. Turn those shrubberies off or down to about 300 meters too.

Don't worry, you'll get it going. You probably won't be able to get all your settings to the maximum, but I can say that I'm getting a visual quality that is superior in most cases to FSX at roughly twice the frame rate. It is definitely uncomfortable learning all about the configurations and file structure of a brand new sim, and there will be some frustration, but likely by next week you'll have it running pretty well. If you were just getting FSX, I would say "Likely by next YEAR, you'll have it running pretty well"

Yes, and I meant TSAA, not fxaa.

I am running 4080x~2000 spread across four monitors and for the most part flying with frames around 40. They go higher and lower depending on what is happening so there, I am pushing twice the pixels so no doubt you will get things going well when you see what setting you need to use.

Check that thread I posted earlier to make sure you have set your nvidia setting as required for DCS.

Hey there CloudSwimmer,

I'm really surprised you are having any issues at all.

I'm running a 3.8GHz 6 core AMD Black with 16Gb of high performance RAM and the AMD 5770 1GHz card.

With the exception of the RAM, your system is much more powerful than mine and I'm maxed out on the graphics without a single stutter. (Well when I hit the ground things in my head stutter..."where did that missile come from?).

With some searching grasshopper...you too will find the error of your ways and will be stutter free. ^_^

Ive downloaded DCS world and bought the A10 on steam for £11.99!!

This looks fantastic..

Does anybody know if there is a mod or a method of saving cockpit views like how you can with EZDOK in FSX.

With news of what Aerofly have planned and DCS's 'EDGE' terrain, things are really looking up for flight simmers in 2013/2014..

Sure, go to ..whatever/Eagle Dynamics/DCS World/Config/View/View.lua and you will find a line that says "UseDefaultSnapViews = true". Change that to false. Then you can use your view commands to move the cockpit view to where you want and hit the command for "Save Camera Angles", whatever that is assigned to. This will become your new view and a lua file will be created somewhere in Users/User_name/Saved Games/DCS/etc...Sorry don't have it up in front of me, just looking at my setup notes. I recommend you start to familiarize yourself with these types of configuration files and I have found it extremely helpful to back things up so that I can get back to defaults if necessary. It looks like a lot of what can be achieved with EZdok can also be achieved within DCS, but it isn't obvious at first glance and will take some knowledge of the DCS World directory structure. There are a lot of people on the ED forums who can help with stuff like this and aside from the occasional rude RTFM/Search the Forum comment you might get, there are a lot of DCS experts on there who are happy to help newbies like you and me. Still, I find myself feeling a bit stupid when I visit that place!

Stuff like this is part of the reason why I would like to see DCS become more popular in a place like AVsim, if for no other reason, there is so much sheer volume of information on ED forums, and since the simulation is in a constant state of development, it is hard to determine what information is applicable.

I have a 670 3gb in my laptop and DCS A10 runs at max settings with no problems and fast fps, try some tweaking in your system because DCS and 670/680 run great on it.
