AOTD for 1/15/13 - Old Kona Airport

Featured Replies

Another community submitted AOTD, and this one by one of our members - Albacore Tunaman.

I didn't know Kona had been replaced in 1970. Learn something new every day. Not only do we get a Hawaii cache, we learn a bit of the local history too.

Enjoy.

Thank you.

I know right where to go for this one. Been here many times, nice area.

Totally worthless comment about Kona Airport. I read about cases where a flight out of Maui (Kahuilui) can be filled up with passengers and have a long way to travel, but the runway would then be too short for the takeoff. So they put some fuel into the plane, fly it over to Kona and tell the service station attendant to fill'er up! Kona's much longer runway allows for a safe takeoff.

Great screenshots, Steve! :good: As usual.

For some reason, I get the impression that this is a repeat. Wasn't there already an Aerocache here?

Best regards.

Luis

Yes, i`m also pretty sure that there already was an Aerocache months ago...

I remembered that also but what the hack. I looked back and I was there with Red Tail. Still a good flight!

You guys have better memories than I do, and you've certainly got my curiosity up. I've searched through my records and on Aerocache.net as well. Nothing so far. Please let me know if you come across it.

I don't remember another aerocache being at this specific location, but I'll check my records tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I too knew where to go and always enjoy this area.

Little side note. If you look at the current Kona Intl. on Google Earth, not too far off then end of the runway to the south is another abandoned airport. It as well as old Kona now have roads running through the runway.

Thank you.

Part of the Old Kona Airport is used for occasional drag races! <---- worthless info II

I landed and taxied down to the AC. Looked down and saw some gas pumps across the street. Thought to myself "There's no way they did the Costco Warehouse In Kailua-Kona!" They didn't, Costco is back about half-way to the new Kona Airport. But I hopped out of the jet ski and walked over to eyeball the gas pumps and buildings around there. Really a major upgrade from what FSX has. Came back and walked around the old terminal and was surprised to see two A/C units hanging out the back windows!

Me and Flight have a love/hate relationship. I love what I see, especially around Hawai'i, but I hate that it seems to be all that I'll see!

Exactly the same for me. I've been drawn back to Flight recently having failed to reproduce the realism in other sims. Had a quick flight last night around some peaks in Alaska at dusk with the sun coming through the clouds and casting shadows with the trees - got an incredible sense of being there that I've never had with any other game and was thinking just how more amazing it would be with Occulus Rift when it comes out.

But then you remember it'll never happen and this is our lot.

There must be some way to persuade them to release an SDK...?
