Replacing Vista with Windows 7

Featured Replies

I need to replace Vista with Windows 7. The issue holding this up is email. I read that Windows 7 no longer includes an email program. What program do you use for email?

Thanks.

Go here and check it out, Walt! Windows Live has free email, just waiting for you!

I appreciate the reply and link Paul, but I'm not sure if your are being facetious ot not. With the smiley face I think you are. Have a bad experience with Windows Live Mail? I have considered it but I believe it stores your email on-line, correct?

I found a free program called Postbox. There is a free Express version, but so far I can't get it to access my mail server. And of course there is NO phone support.

Any other suggestions?

Yeah my humour is not always funny. I'll try and be dead serious now.

Live does store your mail online, Walt, yes, but most of the other mail apps do the same thing too: "Gmail" and so on. I don't like this idea, and so use MS Outlook. Mozilla has "Thunderbird", which is a proper client for your pc. It used to be equivalent to Express.

I bought and installed Outlook 2010. Works great! I also have a GMail account (for subscriptions or the account I use for buying things. Then the spam will go there and not to my Outlook account).

Best regards,

Jim

I was going to do the same until I discovered my Vista Ultimate 64-bit has a 128GB physical memory limit, yet Windows 7 Home Premium only has 16Gb. Could spring for Win 7 Pro and that would resolve that issue, but alas Vista runs FSX fine. I just need to make sure it will run XPlane fine too else I may have to convert to Win 7 if needed. Next box will have 32GB of ram I think.

It depends on the email account type you are connecting too. If you use Hotmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo or Gmail, then the email will be stored on the server. POP3 email accounts, like those typically provided by ISPs, the email will be downloaded to your computer.

Perhaps overkill for just email (but then so is the Outlook program), but EssentialPIM has a free version.

As mentioned Thunderbird is a popular option. Postbox is based on Thunderbird, and works well too.

Windows 7 Home Premium comes with "Live Mail" and there's even a 32-bit mail client buried deep in the install.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Thunderbird is what I downloaded and installed. Took a bit of time to get the POP3 server configuration correct for my ISP. It's working now.
