But this one is really bad. Rather disturbing so be warned.

Ouch—that SUV really came out of nowhere! These are the unpredictable incidents that every driver fears. Fortunately they do not occur as frequently in commercial aviation!

I remember seeing this in an automobile incident compilation. The circumstances of many automobile incidents featured in compilations are almost humorously pathetic (the author most likely would not have included anything fatal out of respect to the victims), but this one was truly saddening and shocking.

I'll do you one even worse. I had one on board mine and ended up capturing the potentially fatal accident I got into....with a dump truck on an Interstate nearly three weeks ago. Yes, I somehow survived that one. Yes, the state police definitely saw the video. Yes, the insurance company found out about the video. Yes, just about everyone I talked to was surprised that I got that one on video. And I know of some people who are now seriously considering getting one for their cars in light of that accident.

The irony is that one of my best friends was telling me how silly it was that I had that camera in the first place. Six minutes later, we got into that accident. Having watched the video over and over again, it was clear to me that after we got hit, my actions as Captain in command would determine life or death for us. Some of my other friends told me I had a pretty fast reaction time given how quick the accident happened.

Wow—another frightening story! Are you allowed to share the video? What was the cause of the incident?

Well, no authority told me I couldn't do so, but if I ever do (and I'm not planning on it anytime soon if I do at all), I'm muting it only for the fact that one of my best friends didn't want to be identified in that video. As for why the accident happened, on a four-lane Interstate, in the right lane was a Camry, next to her was a dump truck, and next to him was us. The dump truck came up between us trying to pass us and apparently drifted into the right lane, hitting the Camry. I'm guessing the Camry must have lost control because at that moment, I happened to be looking out my right window to look at my right mirror, only to see it cut in front of the truck at a 45-degree angle only five feet away from the truck. Now when you switch lanes on an Interstate, you are NEVER at a 45-degree angle unless you happen to be stuck in some pretty serious traffic.

Nonetheless, when I saw the Camry cut in front of the truck, I knew the truck was going to turn, so I immediately slammed the brakes and blasted the horn. At that point, the truck turned to the left and hit us. As the Captain in command, I only had fractions of a second to react. I continued to hold down the brakes, and when the truck hit us, we were turned towards the left. I saw the divider coming up and realized if I didn't do anything, we were going to plow right through it and end up on the other side of the highway or we were just going to flip over. Either way, the results would have been deadly. I tried making a right turn to avoid going nose first into the divider. While I was successful in doing that, the tail ended up hitting the divider instead, and the truck had us pushed up to a position where I was now trying to control this thing on just its left wheels. Once the truck was fully past me and I landed back on my right wheels again, I was now trying to control this thing to keep it on the left shoulder.

Having looked at the crash video, the truck nearly hit the center divider, so if I had been next to the truck the whole time....well....let's just say I wouldn't be typing this post right now. In fact, you guys would never have heard from me again. My best friend made it out of that one fine. I, however, was not so fortunate. Even today, I am still trying to recover from that accident, as I've had so many things wrong with me it's not even funny.

Wow what a story.

Silly, heck no. Video is always rolling when I'm driving. I haven't uploaded my video because it was really nothing to see. My camera captured the accident in my rear view mirror. Here are a few snapshots from my video. This photo just shows my rear view mirror and I increased the size of the photo to make it easier to see.

Any ideas on what this topic has to do with AVSIM or flight simulation?

Do you guys get discounted insurance for using a camera?

Not really. At least, over where I am, we don't, anyway. It's interesting, when I called my insurance company after the accident happened, they told me that was the first time they had ever heard of anybody getting into an accident and subsequently getting it on video. I was told that they didn't necessarily need to see the video, but if they did, they would have to figure out how to do that because they didn't even have a system in place for that. If anything, they normally get pictures after the accident.

Other thing is if you got into an accident where you were at fault, would you really want ANYBODY to know about the video? You would probably just hide it and pretend it didn't exist.

If you watch the first video, the SUV actually takes off like a Cessna and gets airborne before landing. I assume the SUV had engine failure which is why it couldn't stay airborne?

I agree Pete, I shouldn't have posted this. Sorry to have upset you.

In Canada we have no discount. It's just another hobby I have, because one day like Kevin, I'm sure I'll be involved in a accident and I'll be able to prove I wasn't texting while driving. Speeding yes, but texting no..

We have devices that plug into a cars ODBII scanners and record information and then send it to the insurance company.

Did not know that. Boy big brother is always watching and recording everything these days. Altstiff posted the Tu-204 crash caught on car video and one poster said, "what is it with Russian drivers and video recording". I'd be very curious to know how many people are now recording while driving. With the price and size of camera's these days, why not. I know some wanted cameras in cockpits, but that gets into moral values when a crash occurs.

Tragic video... I'm always amazed that people don't slow down in winter. They just keep on driving like robots. If it says 60, they drive in 60 mph regardless of ice, snow, fog or whatever. But I guess, if common sense was common the world would be a much different place.
