March 13, 201313 yr Hi i was wondering if anyone experienced landing freeze just b4 touchdown for maybe 2 seconds but its extremely aggravating .. whole flight is great performance but just b4 touch down this pesky freeze of 2 seconds when fluid motion is most important.. I know it might be a general question hard to pin point idk... :( i was landing at night unfortunately always happens at night i have to adjust my departure time try to land in daytime, i did try with all add-ons disabled just pmdg737ngx and fsx NO AI TRAFFIC I will try during day time with i red there some problems with fsx and night, funny thing i can circle around the city at night all lit up nice and pretty and nothing not a stutter but just before touch down !!! also entire approach is nice and steady/fluid motion.. idk.. i am lost :( Andy Andy Home Cockpit B737
March 13, 201313 yr I seem to recall a possible cause related to landing gear and runway tire screech sounds that load into memory just before touchdown. Could a terribly fragmented disk cause a temporary freeze while these sounds are loading? Maybe others can comment further.

March 13, 201313 yr Moderator I seem to recall a possible cause related to landing gear and runway tire screech sounds that load into memory just before touchdown. Could a terribly fragmented disk cause a temporary freeze while these sounds are loading? Maybe others can comment further. I would agree on both counts. I rarely ever get a full pause prior to touch down, but the times I have it was usually due to a fragmented HD either after installing a new plane and/or combination of new airport sceneries and cleared up after a defrag. Although if using an SSD it would be a moot point since those don't require a defrag. What I have noticed is that right before touchdown my hard drive light will come on when I am about 20 or so feet above the runway. What I am imagin that is, is the touch down sounds loading into memory and it can sometimes cause a pause due to the complexity of the area where you're landing and how hard the computer is working at that time to render all the scenery/AI/user aircraft. I've renamed the skidmark.fx to .off and even doing so, haven't really noticed a difference as I have still gotten the pause once in a while, but always in demanding areas, which make me believe its just the loading of the touch down sound .wav's being loaded in preparation of touch down judging from the hard drive light coming on. I suppose you could always test it by renaming your touch down sound .wav files to .bak or .off then fly a quick pattern and see if that resolves the problem. If not, then it would have to be something else. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
March 13, 201313 yr I don't believe the skidmark.fx fix is really a fix. It might have worked for a couple of people it doesn't fix freezes. Freezes are caused by your computer using too many resources at one time. That's why your HDD was running and lighting up. It could be a schedule you are running and it decided to run that schedule (task). It could be a program in FSX trying to update a weather station and it goes on the Internet and may have a problem doing this. It could be a simconnect problem. It could be one of these problems plus your system is using too many resources and you might have to turn down your fsx and display driver settings to allow your computer to function properly. If you ever get the freeze again, just do a ctrl-alt-del to open up the Task Manager. Look and see what's running and taking up a lot of resources. If you have an addon for weather, shut it down and try and get back into FSX and see if you can continue your flight. If that fixes the problem, then you know it is the weather program (default or commercial). Taking off and landing take up a massive amount of resources as you are usually taking off and landing at a commercial addon airport and many of those really use a lot of resources. Couple that with your high fsx and display driver settings and your system freezes up. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! March 17, 201313 yr Author thanks everyone I have removed the skid mark file idk if it helped or not kinda sorta maybe... I would like to say it did help after running few consecutive landings and the problem did not seem to happen, but it could be placebo effect too lol... hdd should not be a case as I run SSD so any fragmentation is not an issue, I could point to opus next time I will kill it b4 landing I did set it to not update nothing at destination but idk maybe I didn't do it wright. anyhow a pause was greatly reduced by removing this file from lastin as long s 2-3 seconds to an occasional stutter, oh big thing I guess I will also remove head shake from opus kinda bored of it anyways and even though I disabled for landing it still might be loading just b4 touch down. March 31, 201313 yr Author hey thanks for all your help i have found a problem it is now solved in case anyone else experience it what caused the freeze was reflective water, meaning set up anywhere in 2.x i lowered it to 1.x high (if i recall) the highest setting before reflections are in palace and landing is smooth like never. I guess reflection was being applied at around this altitude 10-20 feet combined with heavy aircraft like PMDG, REX textures etc.. it caused this pause to load reflection of aircraft especially on wet runway or whatever it was doing calculating if it should apply reflection or not depending on runway state etc... idk however turning it off helped 100% and it was definite culprit for my problem. i also restored many of sounds/effects i previously removed and lands smooth like never...
