March 22, 201313 yr I recently got FRAPS because I wanted not only to record more than a few seconds of FSX flight but also wanted to share some of it with others. Is there anyone out there who uses this program? I loaded it up (v3.5.9), and thought I had it set correctly (not a lot to set, is there?) until I started up FSX and loaded the default Cessna 172. I set the hot-key at the '1' key (top of keyboard, not numpad), and so with the 172 sitting there cold & dark, I hit the hot-key and went about switching everything on and starting the engine. Then I hit the hot-key again to stop recording. First, though I had set the frames counter overlay to appear in the bottom right corner, it never did. So I couldn't tell if I was recording or not. But then I selected "View" and there it was, a file saved in the correct place. Problem was, when I clicked on "Play", all I got was a black screen, with the FSX sounds, and a cursor that flew all over the screen, leaving cursor arrows behind it. It HAD recorded something, but no video. The only problem I could think of would be that FRAPS does not work in my 1920x1080x32 mode. I noticed somewhere in the instructions where it said to set the FSX graphics at a lower resolution (which I'm not going to do), but it didn't say anything about a resolution limit. I was assuming that this would work in HD mode, and maybe I was wrong. So I'm asking others out there for their input on this app. I want something that will record decent videos of my flights, and that will work at MY resolution. Will FRAPS do? Or do I need something else? -= Gary Barth =-
March 22, 201313 yr Commercial Member I'm using fraps with 1920x1080 resolution without any problems.
March 22, 201313 yr Are you using SweetFX, ENBseries or any other shader enhancement? That can prevent Fraps from recording properly.
March 22, 201313 yr Do you happen to be running multiple monitors? I know on mine, I use a secondary monitor for surfing, maps, etc. If I run FRAPS, it seems to like to record my secondary instead of the primary.
March 22, 201313 yr Ive used fraps by recording video with FS then playback and record with fraps. Seems smoother. Just dont FORGET to turn off the recoding in fraps. Started computer one day and get a message my HDD was full. 1 T Fraps had been recording my FSX flights for a week. The movie file was 700 gb..
March 23, 201313 yr Author I'm using fraps with a single monitor. I am also running REX Essentials w/Overdrive (textures, clouds) and also MegaScenery Earth v.2 Florida scenery. Here is how I set up: open fraps, open FSX, turn fraps on. Does it matter if you're running windowed or full screen? In any case, I never see the FPS meter in the corner, either yellow or red, but it does record. Then when I open the video, it's just black screen with a white arrow cursor duplicating itself all over the screen. -= Gary Barth =-
March 23, 201313 yr Which media player do you use? Fraps recordings may not play properly on certain media players (in my case, the default Windows 7 media player). My Fraps recordings always play properly on VLC.
March 23, 201313 yr I'm using a 28" 1920x1200 monitor and Fraps works perfectly in real time or using FSRecorder clips first --- and the frame counter appears where I want it. Go to the Fraps site and read the FAQ's first. If that doesn't do it contact them directly and they'll sort it out. http://www.fraps.com/faq.php Bruce
March 24, 201313 yr Author No joy! I went to the fraps Web, read the FAQ, and set up everything the way it said. First off, I set up the hotkey F12 for the frame counter, to be shown in the bottom right corner. I then went to the movie section and set up F11 to start the recording. I launched FSX. I then went back and watched fraps as I clicked on the hotkeys. Each time I clicked on the F12 key, it cycled the position of the frames counter. I pressed it 5 times and watched the little dot change between disabled and all four corners. Oh, well... I left it in the bottom right. So far, I had not touched the F11 key to start and stop the recording. But I went to the "movies" folder, and there was a movie for every time I had pressed the frames counter key. I maxed fraps and clicked on the F12 key, and sure enough, another recording started. I pressed F12 again and it stopped. I then viewed all 5 movies, and all were blank/black. I then went and clicked on the F11 record button, and another movie started. I let it run a few seconds and hit F11 to stop it. That movie, too, was blank. I even tried opening them in Moviemaker and Real, and nothing worked. For something so simple, it ain't working at all. I will look elsewhere. Thanks for the help, though. -= Gary Barth =-
March 24, 201313 yr Author Curiously, I downloaded BandiCam, installed it, and captured a video in about 3 minutes. Everything went perfect. PLayed it back with Windows Media Viewer. So I know it wasn't me, and I don't know what went wrong with fraps. -= Gary Barth =-
March 24, 201313 yr Okay, I haven't used FRAPS in a while but I did a quick test with recording my desktop and it doesn't work. Apparently if you have Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 10 or 9 it will cause issues. I'm not sure why, it seems like it has to do with a KB update. EDIT: Update 3.5.99 fixes this issue. Gary, go to fraps.com and redownload the latest update. See if that helps. Edited March 24, 201313 yr by linux731 i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
March 24, 201313 yr Author Well, they lost a customer because of this - BandiCam is working fine, so I'll probably stay with it for now. And as it records 10 minutes in the free version, instead of 30 seconds, I'll probably stay with it. I have both Win 7 64-bit AND IE9 (not 10). But I usually run Firefox, so don't see what difference that would make. BandiCam was downloaded, installed and recording in around 3 minutes, with no problems. The rest of you might want to try it out, too. -= Gary Barth =-

March 24, 201313 yr Anyone have a problem with FRAPS and FS Recorder?? Without FS recorder FRAPS works fine, with it FPS drop to 2 or 3. Even if im not recording with FS recorder. Anyone dealt with this before?? Nick Running
March 24, 201313 yr Author Oh I misunderstood, I thought you had paid for Fraps and you didn't get it to work. Nope! I pay for everything I run, after I test it first. I downloaded the trial version of fraps thinking (was I wrong?) that it worked as advertised, if only for 30 seconds and with a watermark. Had it done what it was supposed to do, I would have popped for the nearly $40. As it is, BandiCam worked perfectly out of the gate, and as a plus, it gives me 10 minutes of recording. I will pay for it. -= Gary Barth =-
