September 19, 200421 yr Hopefully they will address the page fault problem. During a one hour flight, there were 8 million page faults, even though my 1Mb ram was not being fully used.Still, a great announcement.George
September 19, 200421 yr "Fine .. you found the CTD and autogen bugs... 1 Year ago ...Therefore.. ????"Therefore it should have been fixed one year ago, not now (better later than never...?). Normally, bugs (even the most insignificant ones) get patched up within a month. For example, there's already a patch in beta testing for Doom3 and that game is barely available in stores where I live yet. Good customer relations involve listening to the customers and fixing obvious flaws in their product. So in summary:-Yes, I'm glad to see a patch (finally!)-But, because this patch is about 12 months late, IMO MS still failed to deliver. You may say what you want, but taking 1 year to release a patch is not acceptale customer service. The argument that "FS9 doesn't need a patch" no longer works, as it's obvious that even the MS guys themselves think it does."There were two workarounds on those issues.."A workaround is just that. You find away around the bug - it's still there in the program. In the case of the autogen bug, the "workaround" involved disabling a major FS2004 scenery feature (this new autogen placed by default.xml was advertised as a key feature of FS2004). Also, these workarounds did not just appear out of nowhere. A proper patch would have saved some people lots of work. One last thing:It's possible that this patch is the result of reworked customer relations at MS. Maybe MS did some restructuring because of all the complaints posted in various forums (FS9 has received a lot more bashing than I can remember FS8 did). I really hope that this is the case since it would make the switch to FS2006 (2007?) far less painful and not involve long nights tweaking and trying to find workarounds for bugs. A sign of things to come? Maybe FS2006 will be thoroughly beta-tested and any bugs that managed to slip through fixed within a coule of months...I hope so. -
September 19, 200421 yr Greg.If you're going to quote me, quote me in it's entirety:"My point is: it would be nice if the future SDKs were inclusive enough to allow us to develop design tools and methods without going through 1-2 years of guessing games. An early release of a partial or cryptic SDK set is of little use."for emphasis: An early release of a partial or cryptic SDK set is of little use.As far as the terrain mesh, Holger's post in that same thread describes exactly the problem with LOD11 support ( we already have LOD10 possible ). If the range "ring" is not altered, you'll need to slew to see the LOD11, as even an ultralight will be going too fast in flight to see it.I addressed other, more significant problems that need addressing as far as terrain design goes. I hope the patch includes those fixes. If not, we'll have to wait for FS10 ( and the early SDKs ).MS had SDKs prepared since CFS2 concerning VTP and LWM data structures, and didn't release a thing until Christian Stock broke the code for FS2002. I then published the first tutorial on their usage. Their partial and buggy SDK was quickly published the next day! These are the same people that are promising early and comprehensive SDKs for FS10? Well then, the leopard has changed his spots.I'm not all gloom and doom, here. I do note, with relief, there will be an FS10, the seasonal CTDs and the autogen memory hogging will be gone.Again, bravo to the MS design team for fixing what they can, and it is encouraging they are acknowledging the needs of addon designers.Dick
September 19, 200421 yr Heh I was shocked upon hearing it(actually reading it lol),and I hope it addresses every concern that all who have used FS2004 raised. I will be in line to download this patch and it's probably gonna be a large file indeed(200 megs or so perhaps?). I just say w00t! Anyway any links to the next version of Flight Simulator(2006?)
September 19, 200421 yr I am curious as to whether this patch will go some way to amending the force feedback cfg.files on fs9, which (imho) were a step backward from fsk2?This gripe aside, thanks again to MS for a wonderful series of simulators! :-beerchug
September 19, 200421 yr >Geez. I cringe at what you'd post if MS didn't release this>patch. Order of grumpy pills for table 8!>>GaryWhat was the point of this post ? Anything of substance to add or..... Regards,Brian Doney
September 19, 200421 yr The point of his post is highlighting the fact that Some people just cant be satisfied ... Yourself included.. Its interesting to note how 1.. you attest to making your opinion without attacking anyone.clearly broken in your comments above2. You attest to not taking further participation on this thread.again clearly broken in your comments. As for the ctd issue ... Sorry Microsoft isnt ID software .. if you expected a patch within 1 month for a non critical issue keep dreaming. I there are already 2 patches out for UT2k4 for issues i didnt even notice.. As i said before .. based on their track record patches are a long and slow process.. if the product works... great .. if not .. take it back..or wait for the workaround ... September 19, 200421 yr Commercial Member Hi John, those are very good points! Indeed, the increase in horizontal resolution for LWM flattens to 19 meters is probably much more important than the display of LOD11 mesh.I'm just worried that, unless the upgrade changes the way the resolution is set (i.e., manual TMVL adjustments), the chaos about different add-on scenery requiring different TMVL settings will just increase. I'm sure you're aware of the constant discussions in some of the support fora where the add-on producer says TMVL needs to remain at 19 for the scenery to be displayed correctly while the mesh producer says set it 20 or 21 for the terrain to display correctly. Also, I wonder whether this will bring us back to the days of FS2002 where the high-res terrain in front of the aircraft was constantly shifting due to the small display radius? We'll see...Cheers, Holger
September 19, 200421 yr "Greg. If you're going to quote me, quote me in it's entirety"Well, excuse me! I was simply throwing in the quote (partial or otherwise) to include with the link that I thought might interest you. I intended to make no particular point, though you certainly took the liberty to read more into my post.If you're going to be trite, be trite only after you fully understand what's going on.Sheesh!Greg
September 19, 200421 yr Maxis,..........1. No, I still haven't attacked anyone. His post has absolutely nothing to do with th OP, and was certainly not posted to stimulate debate. He's doing nothing more than taking a shot at someone who's opinion he doesn't agree with, with a one or two line post that does nothing but make an attempt to stir the pot. That sir, is called trolling.2. I said that if you wanted to continue down flame-bait trail, I'd leave the thread. Maybe you should re-read my post. Here's a thought:If you think this news is so great, why not share that, and your reasons why, instead of attempting to tear down others for thier opinions ? Regards,Brian Doney
September 19, 200421 yr Yes, this is something I never thought I'd say: but thank you Microsoft! :-beerchug rgrds fredrik
