April 20, 201313 yr General usage, NGX works the same for me with Win 8 as it did for 7. Sorry, I know that doesn't help much.
April 20, 201313 yr Commercial Member Some customers have reported no problems, others say there's problems all over the place. (I had CTDs and sound stuttering issues with it personally) I suspect we'll wait until at least SP1 or 8.1 (whatever they call it) before supporting it. April 20, 201313 yr The biggest problem I experience with Windows 8 is a problem with the NTDLL.DLL file. According to the error report, this is caused as a result of a conflict between my laptop and my Alienware X51 desktop, which is not even a month old. The conflict arises because the laptop and the desktop disagree on something related to the network, which causes FSX to freeze, but it is not limited to the NGX, it also happens with the 747 400 Queen of the Skies. I am yet to experience any problems with the Jetstream, but I suspect that it is because the flights I do on the Jetstream are not as long as the ones for the other two. Personally, I don't even know why that would cause a problem, but apparently it does. I have not had any problems with the UIAutomationcore.dll crash, which used to be my primary cause for tears. But the network disagreement does not affect anything other than FSX, for reasons which again elude me. However, if I turn my laptop off, and then do a flight, it seems to work just fine as the conflict never arises. I would describe that as odd, but that would seem to be an understatement. So far, I would think that the problem is with Windows 8 and FSX compatibility, which makes me agree with Ryan's comment above that it is best to wait for Microsoft to release some form of supposed update, before approaching fixes for the PMDG products. Sorry that I can't be more specific about particular issues and fixes, as I don't know how to fix it and Google searches have so far yielded little other than suggesting that the ntdll.dll file is corrupted and needs to be downloaded and reinstalled. I don't know whether this could be anything related to the problem the topic starter is having. I imagine as time goes by, a more detailed database of Windows 8 problems and fixes will emerge. April 20, 201313 yr Commercial Member I think unfortunately the community as a whole does have to accept the fact that at some point FSX is going to stop working due to changes in Windows, hardware etc - it will never be updated to support new things. Running the risk of sounding sycophantic here, but I do hope that PMDG will make it worthwhile to migrate to a new platform as or when the time comes to entrust FSX to the halls of the archaic, for the time being though, I intend to make the most of it while I can. It is only a hobby after all, and no hobby is without its headaches and moments of clenched fists. But that said, I am going to state that the only reason I bought this Alienware X51 is because of PMDG's 777. So, really, the guys at Dell owe you guys a bottle of champagne, or at the very least, a box of cookies. 10 months ago the heartache of FSX got me to a point where I was ready to shelve everything related to it. Temporary it may be, imperfect it may be, but it still has its moments of unrivalled enjoyment when that plane announce 2500. Sycophantic mode to off ^_^ R. April 21, 201313 yr Support should only come for Windows 8, if and when they fix the joystick issue. We should not have to resort to FSUIPC to fix the shortcomings in the OS. As much as I admire the FSUIPC software, and now can't live without it on Windows 7,it should not be a pre-requsite to running FSX on Windows 8. May 2, 201313 yr Been reading this thread and wonder if anyone has experienced the following? I'm running Win 8, FSX Gold and PMDG 737 NGX. I've set up FSUIPC (licensed) to control my CH Yoke, Throttle Quad and Peddles. Recently I've been getting strange results when I press various buttons. Pressing the button for flaps down incrementally causes the flaps to jump two notches. Flaps up incrementally either doesn't work or produces forty degrees of flaps. I've reset the buttons but no joy. I also have a button that should cycle thru various views (the same as pressing "S") but the button causes the view to jump thru one view and settle on the next view. I want to use the buttons but until I figure out the problem, I'll use key strokes and hot spots. Any ideas? Jim Driskell James M Driskell, Maj USMC (Ret)
May 3, 201313 yr Wait wait wait.... PMDG just ignores W8? What about the people that reconnected to FS('X) after installing/having the madness installed that is W8 without their say in the matter? Will they/we all just be told we can't have FSX's finest products and have to deal with it? That's upsetting news, I literally had my hand on the "order" button on PMDG's site for the 737NGX and the MD-11... Can anyone that has W8 confirm either of the 2 works great on W8 for them? If so, I'll gladly make a leap of faith and buy them regardless.

I tried it for several weeks - did you read up further where I said I personally experienced problems with FSX even when I wasn't using one of our airplanes in it? There's absolutely zero ways that we can fix issues with FSX or Windows itself. "Supporting" Windows 8 when we have no guarantee we're not going to get deluged at support with issues stemming from things that are out of our control. There's no "Windows 8 compatible" way of programming an addon that's different than what we already do. If you want to run it, it's at your own risk right now - that's all we're saying. Some people tell us it's fine with our products, some say they've had a ton of problems. Windows 7 is still for sale too - there is no computer that requires Windows 8 on it, you can always get 7 and format the HD and install it. May 3, 201313 yr Ryan,I apologise for my strong choice of words. I did read what you said further about experiencing problems with W8 and FSX. I read on a bit in the forums and see that (if this is a trend, and not just a vocal minority), PMDG planes seem to accept W8 more if it's not a clean install (like mine) and dislike it if it's a clean install. This is positive news. I shall buy the 737NGX and see if I experience some issues. It just shocked me to think that W8 and onwards would be completely ignored by PMDG's excellent support team, but I realise now that this isn't the case. Again, I apologise for any insult percieved.
May 3, 201313 yr I run windows 8 64bit and every addon I had on 7 works with no issues, PMDG products included. Make sure you completely disable "user account control" through the registry, and run all programs/installers as admin.
May 3, 201313 yr I think the thing to keep clear about is that there have been both fundamental changes both in the W8 security model, and in the address of peripheral hardware, particularly sound and in FSX's case, joysticks, that are out of add-on developers' control (although in some cases, workarounds or install advice can be found). The two are related, as they have been since the advent of NT and the "hardware abstraction layer," actually. The best hope for the hardware peripheral issues is for the manufacturers of same to, mostly, update their software to deal with Win8. I'm running on clean install of Win 8 and have not had many issues, just the sound bug in Majestic's Q400 (fix sounds on the way soon), and I've limited myself to a Logitech 3D Extreme Pro, without the install of its related software or drivers. That's clearly not a scenario for everyone, and without MS support of "legacy" software like FSX, it's going to be increasingly difficult for third parties to innovate reliably on the platform. Of course, it's starting to look like legacy is all MS is going to have.....
