May 6, 201313 yr Hey everyone, It's been two years since I got my AMD Radeon HD 6870 (1GB) and I am wondering if it's worth upgrading it to a more newer graphics card. I do use Flight Simulator X and play other games such as Minecraft and Battlefield 3 at this moment in time. The rest of my computer specifications are listed below: Case: Antec 300CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k @ 4GHzRam: Corsair XMAS3 16GB DDR3Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LXGraphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6870 (1GB)Hard Drives: 2x 1TB Samsung F3 :: 500GB Western DigitalOperating System: Windows 8 Pro (64 Bit) Any replies will be appreciated! May 6, 201313 yr I recently upgraded from a 6970 to a 7970, it's been a rather troubled gestation; resulting in me formatting and reinstalling. I haven't noticed a large difference in FSX, it has made a very slight difference in other applications. Ian R Tyldesley
May 6, 201313 yr GTX660Ti is a great mid range card. - Packs a punch too! I recently upgraded from a 6970 to a 7970, it's been a rather troubled gestation; resulting in me formatting and reinstalling. I haven't noticed a large difference in FSX, it has made a very slight difference in other applications. I've been thinking of upgrading to the 660Ti from the 6870 as I've had nothing but trouble with ATi since I got it new when I built my PC.. not interested in sending it back for warranty as it means me doing without a gfx card in my PC for 'up to a month' (they said). Will be monitoring this thread closely myself.. Texture Artist · Screenshot Developer

The Nvidia architecture has an edge over AMD in FSX and it is generally recommended by most users to use Nvidia for FSX. The 660 or 660 Ti will allow you to force higher levels of Anti-Aliasing which results in an incredibly crisp image. Also, Nvidia drivers support a function that enable FSX frame-rates to be locked at 1/2 of your monitor's refresh rate. (99% of the time 30FPS) - This helps keep stutters to a minimum and will provide you with a truly "buttery" flying experience!

You get a mid range expect it to run mid range settings and high end card get high settings.

I never said anywhere that I was expecting my 6870 to perform wonders.... every now and then in certain games the driver will just crash and it leads to me having to restart my PC to get it to run normally again... either than or I experience 2fps in everything until i do restart. Something is defnately wrong. I had 6950 and 7950 in last few years. Never seen anything like that. FSX locked at 30 fps 95% of the time. Matches my 660ti in every scenario. I fly carenado, pmdg in orbx with opus mostly close to max settings. Plays the ever living hell out of Crysis 3 and BioShock infinity. Love it. Selling my 660ti for 7970. although I love both brands. For ATI, Radionpro utility calls that feature Dynamic Frame Rate. Lock at 30 with unlimited set in FSX. Smoothened out FSX for me in all weather. C.

What scenery? Default?I have never tried changing my Ansio in FSX to Trilinear. Guess I could to see what it looks like. Although I still use 16xHQAF from the driver. ATI Ansio is gorgeous.I bought the Gigabyte HD 7970 OC 3GB 1Ghz and it is fantastic! I came from an EVGA GTX660Ti 3GB setup per the AVSIM guide. I am getting slightly better IQ at slightly higher fps. Obviously there is a diminishing returns as you get past the $250 card mark. Monitoring cards in FSX I rarely ever see more than 800MB VRAM usage. But I like the 3GB for other huge games. Single screen I really doubt I am using it though. Even in FarCry3.No matter what though. Landing the PMDG JS41 (Heaviest fps plane in FSX) at ORBX KSFF (Felts Field Spokane) with cloud cover results in low 20's with respect to fps. My i7 2600k CPU is only 4.2Ghz currently though.C.
