Question about Australia Scenery

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm planning on picking up some of all of FTX's Brisbane/Melbourne/Canberra sceneries and was considering splurging on their entire Australia "terrain" offering.

I was just wondering whether it was actually worth getting, with the upcoming FTX Global.

I'm only ever likely to do IFR between Canberra/Brisbane/Melbourne/Sydney, so about 99.5% of the scenery I will probably never even use. Would I be best off waiting for FTX global and having "better than default" Australia textures as part of this?

Appreciate any advice.

Martin

Haven't shown any interest in FTX Global what so ever so I can't comment on that part. That being said the Australian terrain has been out for a long time and I guess it lags behind the NA regions out there. However since its probably the only one ever going to be available for Australia I would go ahead and get it. The stupid thing is you need ORBX regions for the airports to work 100%. Never really tried the big airports out without the regions (then again its not like you can just uninstall ORBX). I still think that at least my part of the country looks nice compared to FSX default with the ORBX terrain and airports. I don't really fly within Australia that much (funnily enough) but the big airports make for good short and long hops. Stay away from Brisbane unless you have an uber computer, the place is FPS heavy even in default scenery and the ORBX airport doesn't help. Apart from that everywhere else is fine, don't forget as well that Aerosoft will be releasing Adelaide and FlyTampa are working on Sydney.

You need the terrain scenery for the airports to work. As a local, It is a massive improvement in the continent and actually makes it possible to fly over.  Recommended!

Oh that's disappointing that you can't use airports without the terrain. Do you know if that's the case even with the impending FTX Global? So if I want FTX Global and FTX airports I also must purchase FTX Australia?

I can't answer your question above. I thought for some airports you don't need the region but maybe that's not the case.

I will say however that even though the regions are old and not as good as the north American ones in some places, it still looks very very good. Especially the cities.

You do not need FTX Global in order for their airports to work.  I've done that.  They will look better with the surrounding scenery because of the ground colors matching.

You could always try one of their freeware airports (maybe they have one in Oz?), that you try out for yourself then decide to go for the whole enchilada.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

While older it is still some of the best out there. I love flying over there. I own only the regions though.

What does FTX Global NOT include?
1. Geographical and vector data (roads, rivers, coastlines, elevation mesh)
2. Full hand-crafted landclass and polygon landclass
3. Unique ground textures native to the area you're flying in
4. Upgraded airports everywhere
5. Traffic on all major roads (only default FSX traffic)
6. Extensive custom modelled POIs like power stations, windfarms, stadiums, photoreal areas etc

Note that FTX Australia includes just about all of the stuff missing from FTX Global, with the main exception being elevation mesh. Orbx does have an Australia Mesh available as freeware which will work with either FTX Australia or FTX Global.

I can recommend ORBX Brisbane and Canberra.

Melbourne is technically weaker than the other AU releases (quite a frame rate issue.)

Essendon would be a good and close substitute. Cairns is even more one of my favourites - but it's north of Brisbane, so not exactly on your route ...

I think Brisbane may be better on frames but it is more of a memory hog. I have way more OOMs flying in and out of Brisbane than Melbourne.

You could try out the freeware Tasmania region with Launceston free as well.

Martin,

The FTX AU package (Region) is excellent and you will certainly enjoy the area. I took a look at your specs and as long as you're willing to compromise and lower the control panel settings you will be able to enjoy Brisbane/Melbourne/Canberra. They are very hard on fps.

Cairns is the best FTX AU by a mile IMO. I think that you should consider it.

You will need the AU region for any add-on FTX airports. As for FTX Global, it's more of a texture, AG, and lighting add-on and NOT a region, like AU, PNW, EU, etc. You're in for a treat. Once you go ORBX, you will never go back to default.

Don't pass up on the excellent freeware from OZx either.... http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/

including d/l ALL of Ants Aussie Airports - some stunning work for nix......

Thanks all, I think I'll go for the full Australia region then and try one or more of their airports! I'm sure it'll be worth it!

While FTX Australia is great, especially when combined with OZx airports (I have both) - I would go for a more later release like NZSI - primarily because ALL the default airports are populated with buildings and people flow etc - which actually is bit of a pleasant surprise. I recently landed at some NZSI airfield and there were people flying kit planes and taking pictures with flashes - was great! Adds something to the experience.  Planning to get SAK soon too.
