June 8, 201312 yr So, I am to understand then that my over-clocked i920 D0 is in no need of upgrading to boost FSX performance? Define "need".
June 8, 201312 yr Need being defined as follows: would an upgrade from my o/c i920 yield more than 10-15%? If not then the upgrade is not worth such marginal gains.
June 8, 201312 yr Need being defined as follows: would an upgrade from my o/c i920 yield more than 10-15%? Then let me say this. I had a pair of QX9775s clocked to 4.0... and the 920 came out shortly after that cpu... so you probably getting decent (slightly better) performance than me on the skulltrail platform. That said... With the i3770k I have clocked to 4.8, 2 SSDs, fast ram, and a GTX680... I have been able to push up autogen to max and also same for max cloud draw... using SweetFX... Inspector 8xS & 4xSGSS... I was just in Orbx Wales (Cardiff) last night. Most of the time frames stayed up where they are locked (30)... dropping occasionally into the low 20s but then back up. Texture flash from time to time (nothing annoying). Mostly smooth (microstutter not noticeable). I spent what, around $2500 or so, and I feel I got a significant boost from where I was. And I feel I am about 90% from where I'd like to be. Not perfect... but I am very happy with the system. Great visuals and tremendously fast (from before) boot times. So it comes down to how "happy" you are now with the current system... how happy you going to be shelling out a couple grand... can you use that system now as a backup / offload other stuff to it (ActiveSky etc).

June 8, 201312 yr Well I have a i920 Bloomfield 2.66 (o/c to 3.8), now 4 years old, on a EVGA x58 1366 mobo, so I am wondering if I should upgrade the CPU.
June 8, 201312 yr Well I have a i920 Bloomfield Yes, I remember when it came out (I was into computer chess then and cpu was everything)... it is a strong cpu. The QX9775 was yorkfield... why I used it to compare to your system. Again, I think it how willing you are to pull the trigger on departing with some serious cash, and how itchy you are now to upgrade. I think the westman right with the 40% (when trying to remember my frames). Plus the 680 allowed much better visuals. Just don't get the idea that everything will be perfect. And you are going to have to still do some .cfg tweaking. But I do have 'a ton' more of those "wow, this is so cool" moments with the 'new' system.

If you look at My FsMark11 runs the I5 760 @4.45 ghz and the same 680 is Close to 70% slower than My 3770 @4.9 booth cooled with the H100. http://

I have basically the same hardware as you and I'm planning a i5 4670k, Z87 MB and 8GB of 2000+ DDR3. At current prices it's about $600. Not really expensive by 2013 standards. June 10, 201312 yr Commercial Member As someone pointed out for Haswell you have to de lid it as it's so easy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXs0I5kuoX4 Just ordered and now I hope the Corsair H110 will not be overkill....
