Carenado's TBM - Worth buying ?

Featured Replies

Hey,

I'm considering myself an above average simmer who strives for system and flight dynamic realism and I have recetly taken notice of the Carenado TBM 150.

I was wondering if this a/c worth buying or should I wait until the wilco's TBM is released ?

Thanks in advance for any input on this matter.

Regards,

John.

Carenado is not exactly known for systems depth or accuracy. If you are serious about these things, you may wish to avoid Carenado. That said, if you are a casual simmer looking to enjoy a plane, carenado is not bad - it is good enough. But its not quite PMDG or Majestic.

I think there is a review of the TBM by a rw pilot here on avsim. Might be helpful to read.

Outstanding visual model, inside and out as par for the course with Carenado. Systems are good but not advanced. If you are set on in depth systems that you only get with high end or niche addons, this isn't for you.

It's my understanding the Wilco model has slightly more advanced systems modeling, but less of a visual model.

Wait and see what happens next..  Carenado is likely to release SP2, and Wilco has yet to release the first version..

If you want the perfect choice, give it a few weeks - if you like Caranado (as I do).. their TBM is pretty darn nice,

even at this stage.

Just got word from Carenado that the broken Ng gauge (shows 0% during startup instead of rising to 13% as per the checklist) is an "FS limitation." Surprisingly, this FS limitation doesn't affect the RealAir Turbine Duke or even Carenado's own P46T.

Currently, I regret buying the TBM 850. It's pretty, but the engine modelling is almost comically bad. Pre SP1, they didn't even get the cruise speeds anywhere near right. I don't need a full G1000 sim, but I expect basic engine gauges to work and for the cruise speed to be within 5%, which lots of <$40 addons manage. We'll see what happens with SP2.

I view Carenado more as a visualization company than a simulation company.

Yeah, I got the same impression.

The funny thing is that people rave on about how good the textures are but in terms of looks I don't really find them any superior to say Real Air or any other good developer. I think the reason their visuals are hyped so much is because there isn't really anything else to hype.

That said there products are not bad - I really like the C337. There is obviously a market for good looking simple aircraft. Its just that their prices suggest more than what one recieves.

They made a mistake when they stopped making simple aircraft and started trying to make turboprops, twins etc. and started this whole glass cockpit nonsense. Totally different target audience with different expectations.

I guess they just ran out of simple GA singles... they've pretty much made every Piper and Cessna single out there already.

Still a C206 in the pipeline..

They should start doing light twins, twin Comanche, piper apache, aero commander etc... Or singles like the Aztec, Comanche, LSA etc

Was going to get this then I got the email from Wilco about their TMB850.  Yes I know it is Wilco but will wait and see now.
