November 21, 201312 yr Author Well, Hawaii .... yes, its included, and it does profit from all the OSM (not just roads, but all water features like rivers / lakes / coastline) changes from the last two years. Other than that, of course, the higher density mesh is always helping with the topography (better representation of elevation details). But at least landclass wise there was no change. ... And then there is Mauna Loa ... the nightmare of automatically generated scenery. The problem is, that it is maybe the largest shield volcano of the planet (ok, Wikipedia says: largest currently active volcano in the world is Mauna Loa in Hawaiʻi, one of five shield volcanoes that formed the "Big Island" of Hawaii). And shield volcanoes have the "bad habit" that they are very big, broad and have gentle sloes without too many, fine structural details (like other mountains usually have) ... Add to this, that the landclass for Mauna Loa says everywhere "rock" ... then you know what you get. A big, gray, repeating texture (even with XP10s shader tricks applied) blob .... Not very pleasing to the eye. So, this is maybe one of those places, which can really only be represented - halfway - sanely by good photoscenery ... November 21, 201312 yr Well I just flew through the PHNL area and found it very acceptable using your mesh, lacking only the usual things such as Identifiable landmarks. Maybe sometime in the future the unique farmland textures for the area will also be added! We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... November 21, 201312 yr Author Huh, how did you use my mesh "combined" with a photoscenery (thats how I interprete your sentence or did I misunderstand you here)? Be careful, because this is a question implying that you might have misunderstood something in XP10s concepts .... What I want to say: at a given time, X-plane 10 always and only can show ONE base mesh scenery! So, you can either have default Global Scenery, my HD Mesh v1 (or soon v2) or some Photoscenery. But none of them work/mix at the same time together! The only exception is, when phototextures are draped via POL files over an existing base mesh ... but this technique is usually only used (and should only be used for performance reasons!) for local scenery (airports etc.) with not too large extents. Whenever someone makes photoscenery covering a larger area, it should usually not be of the "draped" type, but coming with its on mesh included (which is almost always derived - by tools like g2xpl etc. - from some exisitng default / HD mesh internally). For example all of SimHeavens photoscenery is - correctly - having its own base mesh included (usually derived from Global Scenery or from my HD Mesh) ... Thus it always stands on its own. November 21, 201312 yr Erm, Devon, that appears to be MSFlight... Yes, but its showing a farmland texture of a type apparently unique to Hawaii. I assume that if something Like UrbanmaXX can work, then it must be possible to add additional textures in selected areas (like the airports) in order to customize a scenery. The Beti-X scenery seems to indicate this possibility, so I'm not sure why selected farmland textures appropriate to the area could not be added by somebody eventually.............? November 21, 201312 yr Author Phew ... I think we are going now really off topic. And questions like : but its showing a farmland texture of a type apparently unique to Hawaii. The point is: YES, of course you can customize / beautify / improve XP10 to your hearts content (and quite likely far beyond your wildest imaginations). YES, you can create entire, regionalized texture sets (the tech is built in, and is already used for some things). And YES, even default XP10 textures know a lot about climatic regions (you can compare farmland in US Midwest, Europe or Hawaii). BUT, you can't expect the default textures to be perfect for the 200 (minimum) different ecoregions of the planet (of course, all of them have their distinct look) ... as in that case XP10 texture set would be 20 Gbytes, and Laminar would need 20 artists working a years to achieve that (without seasons) ... As I always say: the engine is there, and with the default(!!!!) scenery we try to represent a good enough representation of the entire(!) planet. Everything else above this is a question of content. And content does not come out of thin air, but someone needs to do it. Thats the point ... And I know how much time was invested in them (by Albert, a good friend of mine from Switzerland ... who is behind most of these ground textures) already! November 21, 201312 yr Author ... we got there in the way, that you have formulated your positions - maybe - a bit too vaguely / broadly. You, pointed to a MSFlight screenshot, which of course can heave "perfect" Hawaii textures as it only had one scenery region (at start), namely Hawaii. So it would have been quite silly from the devs, to not make the farmland look like Hawaii (as they didn't need to care for any other place on the planet). Whereas in XP10, the textures need to - halfway - work for the entire planet (with different climates / ecoregions etc.) ... I have no anger, its just that when people - seem (and this might be my wrong understanding) - to expect, that the default Global Scenery / HD Mesh (all using default textures) should have better textures in a given region, I always have to remind them, that they are "global" products. Where it is very hard to make each spot of the planet look perfect (we are already happy, when at least half of the planet looks OK! ). And, I pointed out, that XP10 has no limitations (technology wise) which prevent any 3rd party from making Hawaii look a lot better than MSFlight  ... I guess I didn't consider the difficulty. Those textures are actually standard in FSX (and are even better in War Thunder) and makes the area one of my favorite places to fly. I'm so accustomed to seeing them the last few years that not seeing them just jumped right out at me. I hope somebody tackles the area eventually. Orbx said a few years ago that they would do it even better for FSX, but I doubt it now.. Anyway, I am looking forward to the v2 mesh.
