X-Plane 10 HD Mesh v2 - PREVIEW

Featured Replies

Regarding g2xpl photosceneries making their mesh from the default mesh, is there any possible way to get them to use the HD mesh? For example, replacing the default mesh with the HD mesh in the file structure. I can't think of a better combination than HD mesh with photo scenery over large areas.

Yes, thats exactly how it is done by those (for example SimHeaven) who do it ..

And - hopefully - last update: I can smell it ... files are uploaded, waiting confirmation from the other side. The everybody goes to sleep .... and maybe Friday could be the day.

So, this is a big thread. Can someone tell me what exactly this product is? Is it higher resolution mesh for the areas depicted in yellow? What is the estimated price?

Free.....yes its enhanced terrain mesh......look up NZ HD by AlpilotX for an already available option......

What is the resolution? Example in the USA, default FSX was 38m if I recall.

Looking forward to seeing the results live and in person. It'll be nice to experience some of the changes we all made in OpenStreetMap over the course of the past two years.

Ryan - the update is not only improved elevation mesh resolution, but also updated OSM data - roads, rails, rivers, coastlines, water - based on an October 2013 data pull. This is the only way to get such data updated, as all these elements are forged together into one file which must be updated all at once. It's a very technical and very data intensive process. Alpilotx was instrumental in the creation of X-Plane's base scenery, and this is an extension on his work. Dare I say it, but he's the only person outside of Ben at Laminar who has the skills and technology to actually do it... and it very well might end up being the only venue we have for some semblance of updated base scenery with XP10 if Laminar doesn't step up and start regular updates along these lines too.

About the resolution question: its not as easy to answer as it is with MSFS, because X-Plane uses an irregular mesh instead of a regular mesh. Its kind of adapted  - during creation of the mesh by the generator software - to the elevation detail of the underlying DEM data (flat, boring land gets less triangles, steeper, more interesting land gets a lot more triangles). But I can tell you, that I have configured the mesh generator in a way, that it can go up to 3-times the amount of triangles compared to default mesh (which is quite a difference).

And you can get a lot of information on this topic on my website www.alpilotx.net.

If you wait a few hours, you can even get all the details on HD Mesh Scenery v2 .... *wink*
