How to fly the aircraft without 2D panel?

I had a TERRIBLE experience flying last month.  I had to LOOK around the cockpit the whole time because my RPM gauge was over on the FO's side!  It was TOTALLY unrealistic and STUPID!  All of that looking around is ridiculous!  All of the information should be right in front of my eyes without turning my head at all!!!  RPM is super important, and you can damage the engine without being able to see it!!!

I even had to CRANE my head around to see which lights I was turning on and off...WHAT AN INCONVENIENCE!!!

TERRIBLE modeling!!!  I can't believe that the VC is such a difficult thing to use!!!

...oh wait, that was the DA40 I was flying in real life.

Come on guys.  Just because you're used to everything being served up to you on a silver platter (unrealistically, mind you), doesn't mean that the VC is bad.  It means that you're relying on an old crutch and you're just resisting the change.  I've been there.  Welcome to 2013.  It's time to face the change.  Times are a-changin'!

I'm sorry, why would a 2D panel be unrealistic?   I've seen your video and you used auto landing - oh whoopy.   I, for one, like to hand fly and land my aircraft including in IFR conditions, so for me to have to press A countless times, pan around with a joystick hat just to keep scanning the info I need which the 2D panel provided very nicely, the VC is not realistic.

I never said the VC is bad, but it should be an option - if you like it, great, go ahead and use it.   How difficult would it be to make a 2D panel?  is that really that hard?   I don't think so.

I understand there are limitations when it comes to views and be able to see the info we need quickly and reliably, but for me, the VC is a pain, it's small, you have to zoom out to see what you need and the runway looks like a match stick.   try hand flying an airplane like that to the runway.

I really can't see what was the value of dropping the 2D panel?   and all those references of yours "crutch", "2013", ...you only come across as arrogant and as if a whole group of people does not measure to your level or something just because you somehow adjusted and adopted a feature that although looks nice in pictures, is very unpractical.

Nice try.  I autoland in my videos to avoid all of the "OMG YOU LANDED LEFT OF CENTERLINE" and all that rubbish, not to mention it frees me up to point out various things as they happen.  In the tutorial video, I autolanded because the tutorial called for it.

So, your point in calling me out on the autoland was to what?  Discredit my sense of realism in the sim?  Please...

It really is that hard, yes.  If it's so simple, then go develop a 2D panel for an aircraft and report back.  There are resources online as to how.  Doesn't need to be for the 777, but once you see how difficult it is to develop a 2D panel (if only in developing all of the various bitmaps), you'll change your mind.  I can almost guarantee that.

It's only a pain until you get used to it.  You really don't need insanely low zoom levels to see everything.  That's a simism.  In a real aircraft, when you're landing, most of your vision is outside with occasional glances inside to check your speed, if anything.  This idea that you need to see everything all at the same time is false.  Most of your view is outside, and even at a zoom of 0.80, you can still see the airspeed.  That's about all you need.

It's really not that unpractical (impractical?).  It's just that you're resisting the change.  It's just like a real aircraft.  If I want to change something that's not within my view, I glance at it, or turn my head.  Granted, you lose the tactile aspect of being able to reach around and feel different items (switching tanks in a small aircraft is more of a feel thing than a sight thing for most), but it's really not that different (you wouldn't have that in 2D, either).  The issue is that people have been using the 2D as a crutch to avoid hatting around and don't want to change.  I'm sorry you feel that my use of "crutch" is arrogant.

The 2013 comment was to head off the people who inevitably show up and argue about the hardware side of things.  Initially, the hardware required to run FSX in the VC acceptably was pretty expensive.  Now this is not true.  Again, not meant to be arrogant.  It's simply a fact: it's 2013, and hardware is now cheaper.

Shall we continue?

...because I'm game.

I've had this discussion with dozens before you and I don't mind rehashing the same arguments over and over.

Cool this discussion again, just way more unfriendly than last week!

That thread got closed just before we were actually getting somewhere!

(As in teaching me/other 2D panel fans, how to do the type of flying we do with only 1 VC window open!)

I am amazed this one is still going.....and if it gets closed now that I have posted in it....then I know it is personal :-)

You can press the "A" button to bring up some top down views of the overhead etc.

It's probably because the team is busy trying to track all of the bugs.  If it were up to me, I would've closed it as soon as it appeared.

Kyle Rodgers

I am going to step in here cause I think the PMDG team is consumed elsewhere. I am locking this thread. PMDG has stated for at least a year that there will not be a 2D panel on the T7. That's it. Suck it up. Now this is locked.
