September 14, 201312 yr I found the various updates to navaids and magnetic variance at http://www.aero.sors.fr/index.html that I've seen linked around here, but I've been scared off of updating with them after reading that they can't update navaids coded in airport bgls, that I could see duplicate intersections/navaids on the map in FSX, etc. I was hoping to update FSX to more accurately match the navaid data used in my payware planes, but not if it's going to cause me problems in the sim. Can someone shed some light on these issues they're talking about? Is it really that bad? Or will I never notice any potential issues most of the time? September 14, 201312 yr Well, believe me, nothing coming from Hervé's site can be bad... We users just have to know that Hervé is offering an update that, is free, and does what is possible given the myriad of scenery add-ons each user can have. I am using FSX since it's release, but the only two add-on sceneries I have for it are LPMA and Lukla from Aerosoft ( Heathrow is too heavy for my PC ), so, using Hervés update is straightforward in my case. Yet, I would really like to see a product, probably a commercial one, which could "scan" all of our scenery databases and sistematically update navaids and also magnetic declination, to make them properly adapt to what other products offer ( Navigraph, et al.). September 14, 201312 yr I only use his MAGdec (magnetic variance) 2010 update for FS9/FSX. For the very reasons "but I've been scared off of updating with them after reading that they can't update navaids coded in airport bgls that I could see duplicate intersections/navaids on the map in FSX, etc." you mentioned. .... those duplicates really mess up the map! Plus .. these others will "kill" your FS MAP ... which I like to use alot. And I have alot of addon scenery ... and I am not an expert in how all the bgl work and who if not correct can really mess up the whole lot. Personally, I do not mess with it any more ... plus .. it does not cover the entire world .... ILSs etc. CAUTION using this stuff ... I would say! Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
September 14, 201312 yr Moderator Reluctantly, I'm forced to agree that it is a poor choice, given that it's less than a half way update process. There is simply too much disconnect between what you see and what you get. FS9 and FSX are static worlds, and absent a way to update 100% of that world with newer data, there's little point to doing so. Add to the above the fact that while altering the licensed data that MS used in the sim for personal use could be interpreted as "fair use," any program that deliberately altered the compiled .bgl files would be a violation of the EULA, and possibly a violation of numerous copyrights held by the suppliers of the data to MS. September 14, 201312 yr Well. I applied the 2010 Magvar. September 14, 201312 yr Author Anyone know what the default fsx airac cycle is? Or which range of cycles is appropriate for choosing from in the online free flight planners? What started this was that I'm going to get the 737 ngx and will need to use a flight planner so I don't have to manually enter the fsx flight plan. I noticed a difference in the waypoints chosen between the 1309 cycle and something from 05/06 when fsx was developed on just a simple flight like ksea to ksmf. September 14, 201312 yr If you update using those files, be absolutely sure that you back up your bgls first, twice I've discovered that the DST flags on many airports went screwy (and not the usual culprits), both times was after installing Herve's updated navaids, and both times the only way I could resolve it was to restore the regular 'Scenery' (not Addon Scenery) folder. I'm not saying his files are at fault, it could entirely possibly have been a coincidence, because I didn't notice immediately if the dst flags had got corrupted, but just be aware that you want to back up your fsx standard scenery before running anything like this - it's good advice that herve probably states in the documentation anyway).
September 14, 201312 yr I update the files and am hay so far. AHS712D Alvaro Escorcia KSGR/OMAAAirHispania Virtual AirlineMSFS / ASUS TUF Gaming F15-Refresh-144Hz / 11GenIntel (R)Core (TM) i7-11800H NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX3060GPU / 1TB-Samsung SSD / 32GB-RAM SAMSUNG-SmartMonitor-M7-32"4K
September 14, 201312 yr I have done it and no problems. But don't expect it to solve everything. On some airports waypoints still won't always line up with the dotted runway line on the ND. For example coming in for KLAX ILS 25L the waypoints are very precise but the dotted runway line is two degrees off or so. Arjen Vandervelde
October 15, 201312 yr Author Well, I guess I can close off this topic. I decided today to update the intersection fixes with the file from the website. It seemed unobtrusive since it's just adding fixes via the addon scenery folder instead of overwriting or modifying default bgl files. I got tired of looking up STARS and SIDS as I"m learning them and not finding the waypoints on the map so I could get an FSX ATC plan at least somewhat close to what I was going to fly. Of course it seems to be a neverending cycle. Now I need to go update my addon aircraft navdata to match so they have the newer waypoints lol. Oh well, seems like a decent price on that from navigraph for one round of data. I don't really plan on keeping the newest one on there but it will be great if everything can sort of match up and be using the same or close to the same cycle. October 17, 201312 yr Author LOL well I just found my first strange effect from the updated fixes file (the one that just adds a bunch of intersections to the map). I tried to use the built in flight planner to generate a "high altitude airways" IFR route from VHHH to ZSPD for the next leg of my world tour. Instead of a nice "straight" shot it looped far to the western border of China and back east to ZSPD. Ooops. Thankfully a nice pre-built route showed up at routefinder and I just plugged it into simroutes to generate a plan for both FSX and the NGX to use. I can't remember now if I've generated a route successfully to VHHH though with the new fixes. I think in that case i'd already generated it and then I added the new fixes and just manually modified the route. Oh well, I'd rather just use simroutes to generate a plan now that FSX has matching fixes for a recent cycle. Less work on my part. October 17, 201312 yr There are dozens of online resources that will give you routes, the default fsx planner is just as bad as the default aircraft.
October 17, 201312 yr Author There are dozens of online resources that will give you routes, the default fsx planner is just as bad as the default aircraft. Yeah the problem will be when I want to fly a route that doesn't show up in those. At least the default planner will give me some waypoint names to plug into the online sites like simroutes, when it actually works right. I've only found simroutes and routefinder though so I'm going to have to go looking to see what else is out there for creating routes. (I know about places like flightaware for getting pre-made routes) AMD Ryzen 9950X3D | Asrock X870E Taichi | Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090 w/EK waterblock | Full Custom Loop Cooling | Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5-6000 | Samsung & WD NVME/SSDs | Phanteks Enthoo 719 | Seasonic Vertex Gold 1200W | Keychron Q5 Max | Corsiar Scimitar Elite SE Wireless | Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo | Logitech Pro Flight Pedals | VKB Gladiator Pro NXT L&R handed | MiniCockpit MiniFCU | Alienware AW34DWF | Asus PG279Q | Win 11 Pro
