I'm Back Too.

I'm back from vacation and now am recovered enough to post again. As is typical with a 12 day vacation, you always try to include 20 days worth of activities.

My vacation consisted of 3 days in Seattle followed by a 7 day cruise up the Inside Passage with ports of call in Ketchikan, Juneau, Scagway, and Victoria, B.C. on the way back.  It was great.

I've got to hand it to the Flight team members. The depiction of each of the included areas I visited ( Ketchikan, Juneau, Scagway, and all the coastlines and islands) very accurately reflect what is actually there. I constantly compared what I saw in Flight with the passing terrain and am amazed at what they accomplished.

I saw the airports at Ketchikan, Juneau, and Scagway. They are very lifelike in Flight from the rocks to the trees and the water. The only major problem I saw with the Flight representation of each was the trees in the approach path to a couple of runways and the taxiway at Ketchikan that is well below the runway. It is actually "well below the runway".  I had the pleasure of watching an Alaska Air 737/400 land there. Just about the time the mains settled, he was in reverse thrust. Very Cool.

We cruised all the way up Tracy Arm Fjiord to the glacier and I can tell you that from a Florida native, it was impressive. Our ship was almost 1000 ft. long and it dodged icebergs and turned completely around in its own length up by the glacier. The view was phenomenal.  I visited the Mendenhall Glacier while in Juneau and it too is breathtaking. If you want to see it as I did, take off in your Cub from Juneau Intl and fly NE. Land on the Glacier and walk around. Fun stuff.

One other thing that is hard to depict in any simulator is the terrain variations especially around Scagway. The train ride to Canada and back is unbelievable. You can look out your window and look down a couple of thousand feet at the river and the original trail of 98.

All I can say is that if you can't make this trip, start down at Prince Rupert Island and fly North along the Inside Passage. I recommend the CC because anything faster won't give you the true feeling of being there. Take your time, look around, and land at all the airports along the way.

I hope that sometime next week I'll be able to post some of the pics I took so you can make your own comparison.

Thank you.

Rick

The wife and I took almost the exact same cruise about 5 years ago!  Only difference is, we went to Sitka instead of Victoria, and I couldn't agree more, it was the best cruise and scenery EVER!

Our cruise ship was the very last ship of the year, the last week of September and the first week of October, so as a bonus, EVERYTHING was on sale at incredible discounts!   lol

Glad you enjoyed it, glad to have you back, and thanks for making me wanna go back!   lol
