New cleanup option, SSD users will love it

Featured Replies

The latest updates from MS introduced a new option in the disk cleanup dialogue. It enables you do get lost of the unnecessary files from previous updates and only was available via some extra tools before. Now this wasn't really newsworthy but I could get rid of over 6gb on my small laptop SSD which is quite the gain.

See this example shot of where the option is. That's after cleaning of course, so perhaps check how much free HDD/SSD space is available for you. Note. It might need a reboot to really show up as new free space. That reboot will also feature the 'don't turn your PC off' screen for a second, so I guess it's really cleaning up.

After cleaning, you could purchase even more addons, right? Just saying. B)

Aha excellent, good finding! Thanks for sharing this CoolP.

Cheers, guys.   I just had some 4.6gb gain on my desktop. I was wondering if we should thank MS for the new option or just be mad because it had collected so much garbage in between. ^_^ Well, I'll pick the thanks.

I think Win8 drops the unnecessary update files since its product start. So, in this way, the answer is yes. Win7 just learned it, so to speak.

win 8 has it too, to see it you need to click on clean system files or something

This a Win7 feature only?

It's also now present in Vista.

Wow nice! I accidentally fell on this thread while for searching for other stuff...

Basically though, I've been in the quest for freeing up space on my ssd since months ago... the best I could do is 90 gigs for my program files and 17 gigs for windows. The rest remained free. It was nice, but I knew for certain that the winsxs folder can be tweaked in someway to get more space. I know this folder has a lot of hard links which means folder size isn't what it seems. ALTHOUGH this fact, it still had the need for a tweak to get rid of REAL file duplicates. Searching the entire web I stumbled up one sketchy tweak, which I decided not to bother with since it involved with backing up the entire ssd. Also, while I searching I discovered that Microsoft has improved winsxs handling in windows 8 but didn't do so (back then) with windows 7. It's good to see they finally decided to do something!

That's the best I could do so far (NOT including the clean up suggested in this thread):

The 90 gig program files is mostly FSX.

Before this I could only push PFx86 to around 60 gigs of content. It means I managed to clear about 40 gigs, a lot by using junctions. For example, REX has an "images" folder inside it, taking 10 gigs. You don't need it laying on your ssd once you ran rex once! You should move it via junction to your mechanic and for small textures changes it will still be fast enough. Ta-da! you just saved 10 gigs of precious ssd space! :)
