Your opinion on my Night texture

Did you also disable add-on scenery? If you copy my files in Add-on scenery, change the folder...

-----------------

For a while, I'm gonna to work on whole province of Ontario, and I will release the package in one or two months, this way I 'll get more time and energy to put on the project and as a result the scenery will be much more detailed. It will be a pay ware add-one, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the scene.

Ontario?! That would be awesome! Finally get to fly out of CYHM at night!

Thank you and please take my money!

RapidPars Version 4

oops, thought that was my link not working

Hi Chris,

Quick reply with a demo - good test too!! LAX area is a challenging area performance-wise.

So, downloaded and installed no problem. I am using Blue Sky photo scenery for So Cal. I like that I can use your lighting in conjunction with quality photo scenery - makes for a compact add-on. I used pretty light weight aircraft - ones I would normally use to evaluate scenery add-ons to test out the demo.

I found with my setup, Level 2 and Level 3 was pretty much unusable due to excessive loss of FPS. Level 3 (plus Level 0) resulted in virtually freezing my system - FPS actually dropped down to less than 1 shortly after departing LAX! Level 2 gave me low to mid teens. Level 1 was very usable though - low 20's to 30 (my limit) depending on the view etc. Level 0 was high 20's to 30. The good news is, I actually preferred the appearance of Level 1 over 2 or 3. The higher levels were too much for the LA area. Based on this limited experience, I might suggest density settings equivalent to level 0.5, 1 & 1.5.

My only other comment is I thought the lighting could have been a bit brighter. LA at night seemed rather dark on my system - darker than Mohsen's lights and FTXG. I'm using DX10 and Steve's shader fixer, which may result in different intensity than you're seeing.

All and all though - very promising stuff!

I took some screen shots to share my experience. These are all shot from the same spot (paused the sim) with daytime and night at each level. (0, 0+1, 0+2, 0+3):

Thank you very much Odourboy, you input is greatly appreciated

may i ask what kind of hardware are you testing with

i am running on my dev laptop (Yoga13) i can only fly level0+1

id expect a mid range dedicated sim PC to run level 2 fairly easy

i will add more levels of intensity

the best part is you don't lose much of your view as go low with intensity levels

as the ground splash makes up for turning off some lights

i don't use DX10, i guess i should test with DX10 as well

the lights do seem little dark than what i get here

is your monitor brightness lowered?

Chris

You will find a complete list of my hardware under my picture to the left of my post - just click on 'My PC'. (Take a few minutes and fill in your profile then there's no need for others to be curious about what H/W you running FSX on).

I try to keep my monitor settings 'neutral' and customize my screen appearance with NVIDIA control panel. That way my screen shots look consistent with what I'm seeing on my monitor when viewed elsewhere (though if your monitor is set up differently, all bets are off).

The performance issue could be a DX10 thing. I'll test with it off to see if it makes a difference. I also have UTX USA active - don't know if that's an issue. Also, Orbx FTX Global textures are installed, but I disabled 3D lights and Vector lights and Orbx Libs (which made no difference).

Cheers, Brian

Thank you for your feedback odourboy

your rig is fairly solid; im running a plain vanilla FSX with no addons on my Dev Laptop

if i fly the area with no lights im getting around 17FPS

i think the LAX grid is little too much for my natural spread
i will adopt the area with additional level of intensity

i have my external monitor fairly bright, its a new unit
i just never played with it much, its all default and its LED HD

Regards

Chris

those of you who downloaded the demo already

an update has been made to improve performance significantly in LAX area

please download from the same link again and overwrite current files

you will enjoy your demo much more with this fixed revision

please let me know how this is working for you now odourboy

Chris

Hi Chris,

Downloaded and flown. It appears that you've reduced the light density  in levels 1-3. I think these are now very appropriate (at least the the LA area). Level 3 is not over the top and level 1 is actually quite satisfying for me. A good trade between performance and eye candy.

I found a huge performance improvement - by at least a fact or 10 for level 3. My only concern is that I also noticed you significantly reduced the coverage area for the 3D lights in levels 1-3, so I'm not sure if this is going to scale when if you tried to fill in the entire greater LA area and if that's the main reason my performance jumped so much.

Once more on the brightness and then I'll stop. :P The 3D light levels are actually pretty good (maybe just a touch brighter would suite me). OTOH, the level 0 'base' would benefit from more brightness. If it were brighter, I could probably use that level alone and feel I had a very reasonable night time environment.

If you want to keep to delivering demos, I'll keep trying them.

Second opinions welcome!

Brian, thank you for your great assistance

your feedback is accurate and to the point

if you dont mind, i need your help confirming the colors under DX9 are brighter

ive tested yesterday with DX10 and the colors were slightly dark for my taste as well

as for brightness, try turning bloom on under DX10

i reduced the number of distant lights not in view

i didnt realize this until you brought it up, too many lights at a very large radius were on

think of it as autogen radius, this was the fastest way to correct this issue before too many members experience this

in the full version the area is segmented so not all CA comes on at once ;)

Best regards

Chris

Chris,

I did a comparison between DX9 and DX10. The intensive of the 3d lights and the 'base' were virtually unchanged on my system. There was a difference in the contrast of the view - the darks were darker in DX9, which had the effect of making the lights stand out a bit. This is a difficult thing to properly evaluate though because I have the DX10 Fixer installed and I know Steve has been working on fixing errors in landscape illumination (day and night) that are part of the default FSX DX10 shaders. So what you're seeing may be quite different than what I'm seeing.

Bloom made a big difference. I don't normally use bloom because I'm not keen on the effect, but in DX10 it made the 3D lights obviously brighter. The 'base' illumination did not appear to be effected by the bloom (I wish it were the other way around... I'd be a happy camper.)

Another thing I did was compare the exact same scene with  Blue Sky and your NEX lights to FTX Global with Vector lights enabled. Surprising to me was that the road lighting and neighborhood 'splashes' were very comparable to your base intensity levels. It was actually  the other scenery lights (like autogen buildings) and the brighter 3D and Vector lights that made the FTXG night world appear brighter than NEX night world. So it would seem I am out of line in requesting you brighten you base.

So, do you have a strategy that will allow you to illuminate a huge area while keeping performance hit in check?

Thanks again for you valuable input Brian

i do have few ideas to improve performance in a large grid such as LAX area

i noticed a huge performance increase when scenery complexity and autogen density are lowered (i always fly full sliders)

this improves FPS in the LAX area in particular

another strange anomaly i notices in LAX, as you approach the field FPS decreases to almost a halt

once you go pass the fields fence or so, it just stops at once and FPS goes back to stable instantly

at first i thought maybe its because there were less lights in view, but i was proved wrong as soon i a turned around with my Heli, keeping within LAX boundaries

there were no FPS issues with all lights in view Level 3

don't know what to make of is; this is the first i noticed it

agreed, the buildings textures adding to the night environment feel

i will consider this in the future; i don't want to jump over my head atm

i have made night textures with my iCVFR free project; this had made a great improvement to the view

your not out of line; i will definitely improve the base tone and brightness

my apologies Mohsen for hijacking your thread, i will open a new thread to continue disscussions

Hi,

odourboy I've been working on a new method that made me to place lights on the scene manually. I want you if you have time to test it to see if it has any advantage over the previous  methods that was automatic and was much faster.and since you tested my previous files you can tell which one of my projects was best.

here is a small area of oslo city that i used just for testing .
It is the texture or photoscenery file:

http://mohsenfff.dl.rapidpars.com/4780/3170983/c8fkar0c0aq/norway_night.rar

it is the bgl and agn file for the lights and autogen building

http://mohsenfff.dl.rapidpars.com/4780/3170997/yqe2xmz1fvk/lights-bgl.rar

http://mohsenfff.dl.rapidpars.com/4780/3171001/5k5s2h189sw/house-agn.rar

i hope you still have the ramplibrary and orbx lights

and it is the file to show where the scenery is that you should place in the C:\Users\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files and load it in you FSX
