November 5, 201312 yr we are wowed by scenery of places we are not familiar with. We get critical of scenery we are familiar with. I agree with this comment. Too me, an important aspect of the fsim hobby is to virtually go to places, sometimes to bring back memories of where I have been, and other times to see how new places would look like if I really flew there. And that is why the external aspects of the simulation are important to my taste. I really appreciate the sceneries, the weather, the traffic of network simmers, etc. But that is not all I enjoy. I like a balanced mix of : (1) learning something interesting and kind of technical (about flying, and about making stuff work: add-ons, the tweaks, the gadgets); (2) Visiting places (as I said above); and (3) Actually flying on a simulated environment of course! And that is why I prefer a simulator where I can blend those three aspects of the hobby....and by the way through the hobby I have gained quite a bit of control of a real problem I have had for several years : Fear of flying! November 5, 201312 yr This has been said more than once, but needs to be said again... FTXG family does not add POIs. Was never intended to. Their detailed regions are for that. If the landmark ain't in FSX it ain't in the FTXG family. Simples. Mike There are numerous POI buildings present in the FTX Iceland free demo that is not present in fsx default. The pearl, Hotel Loftleidir, and the national university are but a few examples. This makes the exclusion of Hallgrimskirkja even more perplexing. Its overall, a very good product.
November 5, 201312 yr A little offtopic but has anyone got arosoft Keflavik X to work with Orbx Iceland? I get the default runway shining trough the keflavik X textures and it makes the scenery look odd, would be great to get these sceneries to coexist.
November 5, 201312 yr I have been there, in fact I lived there for a while many years ago. I still visit regularly. This is the real world view roughly NE from Reykjavik airfield. The Hallsgrimskirkja is to Reykjavik what the Statue of Liberty is to New York. This is Aerosoft's version This is Orbx's version Aerosoft did well to include the church. For Orbx to leave it out altogether is unforgiveable! Orbx's airfield buildings are more detailed though. Overall,I prefer the Aerosoft version of the entire country. To my eye, it seems more accurate. The Aerosoft version also has a seasonal texture tool which AFAIK is absent from the Orbx. John +1 and nice pics! ORBX did include some POI buildings not present in Aerosoft Iceland X which makes the exclusion of that landmark that much more perplexing. Hallgrimskirkja notwithstanding,I feel ORBX does a better job of populating the rest of Reykjavik (yes, I know colonial ranch style homes are not indicative of Icelandic architecture). Kindest regards

See here. http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/67142-iceland-demo-and-iceland-x/ Posts #41 to #43 In case you are interested, if you have Iceland X and the Iceland demo, this topic also offers a guide as to how you can integrate the two. Among other things, you can have the Hallsgrimskirkja in exactly the right place. Regards, Nick

November 5, 201312 yr There are numerous POI buildings present in the FTX Iceland free demo that is not present in fsx default. I happily stand corrected. I'm also with birdguy. I spent a hundred and something hours flying over the North Island of NZ. The Orbx representation is close enough that I can navigate by looking out the window. Sure, NZHA is missing some runway lights and the village of Awakino is missing. Meh... Details. It's easily good enough to be recognised as home. Mike Mike Dryden

Herein lies my criticism of the Iceland demo. It's supposed to be a demo of the various pieces of the ORBX global puzzle working together yet they have clearly added individually placed items, do they intend to add POI to the whole world? Or is the demo a misrepresentation of the final version? That said I am probably their target audience and will undoubtedly purchase the various bits and pieces.

I think they did indicate that they may release subsequent FTXG Object Packs (or some other name), that would add further detail, objects, POIs, etc to areas, alongside the FTXG Base, OpenLC, Vector, stuff, etc. So I would see it that the demo is just showing a bit of everything that the FTXG product line can 'do' to an area. I do think it's a bit daft and self defeating to criticize a company because their freely provided demo areas is 'too good' or provides 'too much', regardless of how it compares to the current FTXG product line. Would we have ben happier if they had not made Iceland so good, and had not added the objects? ..... that seems very counter-logical!
November 9, 201312 yr As it happens, JV announced yesterday that there will be an SP at some stage that includes the addition of said church. ;-) "no timeframe on this patch". Neil Hill will be upgrading all of the Iceland airports as part of the patch. He's already done ~18 freeware US ones to go with FTXG, with a list of more to do... Mike Mike Dryden
November 10, 201312 yr For the Aerosoft version: IIRC, I have more buildings around the Hallsgrimskirkja than you do. What are your autogen settings? For the ORBX demo: Don't textures change automatically by the seasons there? Yep, ORBX change seasons automatically. AS scenery and airports mostly seem to have a manual adjustment..........mostly

Iceland demo notwithstanding, FTXG does not overwrite POI buildings present in the default FSX scenery files. Any POI buildings seen are still generated by the default FSX texture set as far as I can tell. I've not seen anything from ORBX in this regard but would be keen to find out as well if there is a specific plan for adding POI's above and beyond what the default textures provide. Regards
