Occulus Rift and Flight Simulator X?

Featured Replies

Wouldn't it be cool to immerse yourself in the cockpit of an A380 using the Occulus Rift (http://www.oculusvr.com/). I hope it gets supported. Anyone else looking forward to it?

I'm looking forward to this more than to anything else in recent years. And I really hope the Rift will work with FSX as soon as possible, however this can be achieved!

Are you going to buy the dev kit or wait for the retail version?

Im planning on waiting for the retail, i think it will be worth it! I really hope they make it compatible for FSX or X plane

OVR is great and all, however, I've yet to encounter anyone (myself included) that didn't get headaches and severe eye pain after prolonged use. By prolonged use I mean anything longer than 40 minutes.

Also, make sure you take Ginger prior to using it... It'll relieve the associated nausea and overwhelming urge to hurl.

As for FSX - https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=752

I suffer from migraines. This is not good. I wonder what causes that.

Hum... I think the dev kit is a really stupid idea, unless you don't know what to do with your cash or are really developing for it.

I mean, imagine you shelled out lots of $ for the currently available one, then saw Crystal Cove at CES - I, at least, would bite my arse...

What is Crystal Cove?

The eyes are very sensitive to light, radiation, hertz, etc. It's difficult to say for sure. OVR will strain your eyes, which in turn causes headaches, nausea and vertigo.

People rant and rave about the Rift, but the primary issue is that you're only receiving one sensory input, which is via your eyes. You're not experiencing physical movement or the other sensory perceptions that accompany performing the act in RL that you are doing virtually. All if which is done sitting on your &@($* in a chair... Point is, it's confusing to your brain and commonly leads to VR sickness. If you are experiencing pain or debilitating effects from performing an act, then you should probably stop. Your body has a tendency to let you know if something is wrong and has measures in place to let you know you should stop doing whatever it is that you're doing.

They have updated it since the original release of the Dev Kit, adding new functionality's. They have added 4K resolution into the kit and it now uses a camera to improve the head tracking capability. Take a look here from last weeks CES -

I think a better solution to this sort of thing for the FS world would be AR instead of VR. Check out castAR by technical illusions. Just as effective and I think will be cheaper. Also has the advantage that your view of your keyboard and other hardware is not shut out.

This looks good, but I don't think it will be more immersive than the Oculus.

It can't be by definition (AR instead of VR).

We'll see how the restriction with not being able to see the keyboard works out - I believe there will be a solution for this at some point, for example a forward looking camera that recognizes the keyboard and overlays it on the image.

I mean, I'm having visions again here... how about if the Rift had two forward looking cameras, able to track your hands in 3 dimensional space, and use that to overlay virtual arms/hands in the flight simulator cockpit? So that you could actually reach out to VC clickspots and press buttons? ...

According to an article in this months PC GAMER, they used the Crystal Cove for some time at CES and confirmed that they have managed to reduce the nausea and spatial disorientation considerably..I'm really looking forward to trying it out..
