February 8, 201412 yr Author I use REX Essentials. It has DX10 compatible sun, glare, and wave annimations. REX OD is a must have add-on. The great thing about it is that you can create custom colors for water and save them. I was considering upgrading to REX4 but many have complained about the water being too dark and to be honest I'm very happy with FEX clouds and REX Essentials. The only thing I wanted was a better sun glare and I just found what I'm looking for. I just need to ask the members for the files. I will start a new thread because the Youtube member has not updated a location where to download the files. If I can't get the files, I might just upgrade to REX4 just for the updated sun glare. The textures I'm using are from a REX theme called "VFR Serenity" but as longs as the DX10 are ticked in the options panel, you will be using DX10 enhanced texture. I wish I could help you with Active Sky. When I upgraded to REX, I never looked back or considered anything else. I only use FEX clouds because they are much more voluminous (puffy.) Good luck! Jose Thank you so much Jose for your input, much appreciated! I do own REX Essentials and even something called REX Essentials Plus (just checked on my disk) so maybe I'll give it a spin. In the past as I think I already mentioned I preferred the AS2012 textures over REX textures but maybe what's in the REX package is better now when running FSX in DX10 mode and especially when REX has DX10-optimized textures. However you mention REX OD as a must have and I do have something called Overdrive but that seems to be for REX 2.0 which I believe was released before REX Essentials...does that mean there's also an OD package for REX Essentials? Guess I need to do some REX studies  I'm very interested to hear what you end up with using so would be great if you could report back or link to the new thread you mention you'll create. Also, what was that YouTube clip you were talking about?

I hope a member here can help. REX Essentials was released first. Then the OD package. It includes additional textures, clouds, etc. I read that REX4 has enhanced textures for dx10, including the sun glare that is blinding. That's what I want! Try REX and see if you like the results. Let me know what you think. Jose MSFS
February 8, 201412 yr Author Thanks! I might very well buy the REX4 package if it will make DX10 look much better when it comes to both the sun and water textures. I checked my account at Flightsim Store and seem I only bought REX Essential PLUS but not the OVERDRIVE package. However considering REX4 is the latest package maybe that's the package to go for anyway to have the best possible DX10 experience. I read on the product page there's a $5 USD discount for previous REX Essential customers but when I tried buying REX4 I never saw this discount so I just sent them an email asking why this is. I've seen the YouTube clips before and I agree the sun fix looks really nice. When it comes to the rain fix though IIRC it already looks quite good when using the Rain shader included in DX10SF. Will do another check tomorrow. Will definitely let you know what textures I end up with.
February 8, 201412 yr Gentlemen, please..... you made me start reading the DX10 guide by PJ. I keep "rejecting" the DX10 path, mostly because, I don't want to find that my Aerosoft, Flytampa, Taxi2Gate (and some free altiports), along with my Duke V2, (pre-NGX) PMDGs, QW146 and LDS767 display in a strange way even with Steves' Fixer. I might (hope) be wrong anyways..... Edit: No REX, FEX or other Sky/Water textures here.... Sam. Waiting for the 64-bit PSION Flightsim for ZX-Spectrum ////
February 8, 201412 yr Author As you've seen following this thread I too was skeptical but so far I've been more than pleased with the result and although I still haven't checked all my Aerosoft airports it's looking really good.
February 8, 201412 yr bought the fixer followed instructions I get worse fps with the NGX (VC) better frames external. Back to DX9 Jose De Campos London

February 9, 201412 yr Author bought the fixer followed instructions I get worse fps with the NGX (VC) better frames external. Back to DX9 That's strange because my FPS increased in all views, in the v/c of the NGX it went up by 10-15 FPS and then I'm using the same settings I used with DX9 except for water which I actually increased from Low 2.x to Med 2.x OD is a free update. Jose That's great news but I'm not sure how to lay my hands on the OD update because when I checked my account over at Flightsim Store I couldn't see any option to download it.

February 9, 201412 yr Author Visit the REX forum for the free update. Tried that but although my account over at REX was created back in 2008 and I've used it many times in the past now the status of my account is 'Guest' and I'm not even allowed to post in the public forums even less checking out the real support forums. Actually I noticed this already yesterday so I've sent them a message asking what's going on... However at this moment I'm quite happy even without REX because I just tried a solution to the sun texture issue provided by Steve (the developer of DX10SF). After he discovered the sun issue I've been showing off seems to be a bug he suggested to change one of the values in the suneffect.cfg file and what he suggested worked out really good! For anyone interested check this link out -> http://forum.avsim.net/topic/434255-problem-with-the-sun/?p=2923580#entry2923580
February 9, 201412 yr So now I tried the bloom effect but to be honest I found it a little bit too much sort of speak. For instance when I was in wing view the bloom reflection of the sun made what looked like a large white circle on the surface of the wing and I didn't find it pretty nor realistic. Maybe I need to tune the bloom effect in some way to get the best result? IIRC I read something about tuning the bloom effect in the documentation for DX10SF. Forgot to mention that I did switch to default FSX water and wave effects after switching to DX10 from using AS2012 textures and wave effects in DX9. Reason for this is I didn't think the water looked pretty or realistic at all in DX10 and after reading lots about this most people seemed to suggest the use of default FSX water and wave effects but with the DX10SF water shader applied. So that's what I'm running now and I think it looks pretty good although I still think the water (non-tropical) could be a bit darker in it's tone/color. One thing though which was very cool was to see how the weather and winds actually made a difference on how the water looked with white caps etc. Yes, you can tune the bloom effect from the fixer. I haven't seen the effect you described. Maybe it depends on the plane you're using? On mine, the entire wing glow and shimmer. My bloom settings are default setting, which are all maxed out. I agree. I'm using REX Essential and I've only found one type of wave animation so far that I think looks very good in DX10. I do enjoy the default water as well but I normally change the corals to something from REX. They look much better than default FSX corals. Now that you mentioned it, I think I'm going to try the default water again. I didn't know it reacts with the weather and winds. Nature Boy
February 9, 201412 yr Author I tried changing the bloom settings in DX10SF but I still prefer running without the bloom effect, I do all my flying in the NGX. The waves affected by the wind and weather is really cool! I did a test manually changing the wind speed and watched how that changed the look of the water and waves and it really does work.

Glad you found a fix. BTW: You don't need REX OD, REX Essentials has some good textures you can play with. Some wave annimations do not look good using DX10, but some do. I will be upgrading to REX4. There are some really nice sky textures for DX10 and I'm waiting on a avsim member to confirm that there's a blinding sun effect that is DX10 compatible. Jose MSFS
February 9, 201412 yr Author Thanks! Now that I found the fix for my sun issue and I'm pretty happy with the default FSX water and wave effect in DX10 with help from the DX10SF I think I won't be getting REX4, at least not at this moment. Might change my mind though once you start showing us lots of beautiful DX10 screenshots based on REX4 textures
