Not maintaining approach speed

Featured Replies

For the last couple of flights, my 777 is doing something incredibly annoying.
Which is.
On approach, flaps 20, gear down, vref + 5 set, loc and g/s captured..

The engines keep spooling up, resulting in vref + 20 and more..
Hitting the speedbrakes results in a very slow speed drop, but when near to vref + 5 and speedbrakes off, the A/T again spools up, making the plane overspeed again.
This never happened to me before until the last couple of flights in the plane.

Do you mean flaps 30? It sounds like you are getting too slow for the configuration and the speed protection is activating, if you are using flaps 20 and not 30 that is.

Flaps 20, calculated speed was vref 156,
In my first post i didn't give a landing speed, so how did you figure out i was to slow?

Speed was set at 161, and the A/T cranked that up to 185+ twice.

FOB was 32k lbs

I landed like this a lot without issues, smooth stable approach, nice landing rates, no issue's

But the last 3 where all like this.. And i have no idea why.

Hi, Rob,

Only thing I can think of is there is a discrepancy between the actual gross weight (as shown in third  CDU FS Actions>Fuel) and the gross weight entered on the Approach page (the one that shows calculated V Speed).  However I just tried this (but using the flaps 30 reference speed) and low speed protection didn't kick in.  However my IAS was just above the yellow low speed range on the PFD.  Are you getting into the yellow range of IAS or receiving an "Airspeed Low" warning?

Edit: Another possibility might be a major wind shift causing your airspeed to drop suddenly.

wind did not shitft, i was no where near the yellow part of the speed tape.
I just uninstalled it, reinstalled, went from LAX to ORD and it landed just fine.

I'll do some more testing.

Where are your hardware throttles during all of this, and what is your AT override setting?

Throttles where around the 55% N1 setting when i hit toga.
Override is never,

I need to know where they were - your hardware throttles - during this whole time, not just when you finally decided to go around.

If they were at around 50% of the physical throttle travel, then it sounds like your computer was simply responding to your hardware throttle position.

Override is never,

To be clear:

Your override setting is set such that your hardware throttle will never override the AT?  I always forget the wording of the specific option, but ensure that you're using a mode that overrides your physical hardware if you want to leave it in a set position without worrying about it interfering.

It NEVER overrides the physical hardware throttle's

They where at the setting which will result in around 55% N1 on takeoff, at which i select toga to takeoff,
After that, they stay there untill i disconnect the A/T and pull them back, up, and further back to activate the reversers...

And it is a setting in the fmc under pmdg options.
The modes are to override: Always, Only in hold.. Never.
Mine is set to never.

Then there's your problem.  If you've set it such that AT never overrides your physical throttle, then leaving your throttles at 55% right after TO will mean that it's going to interfere on approach.

No it's not.

It means that no matter what you do with the real life throttles on your desk, The sim will not react to it.

But as stated in a couple of posts before, a reinstall (Even though i always keep that as last resource) fixed the issue..
No on approach into LAX and she works like she always did.

I have the same problem if I leave the "Disable turbulence effects" unchecked. Make sure you have this option checked when using any PMDG aircraft.

No it's not.

Read the sentence I quoted over again.  Looks like you typed the opposite of what you meant.

Glad the reinstall seems to be working in any case.

I did read.. And sorry to be rude, but you are wrong, you got it turned around.
The NEVER option, will ignore any input your REAL throttle sends to you pc, and just let the sim do it's thing.
When you select always, and let say in cruise, you pull back your real throttles, the same thing will happen in the sim.
Right now mine is set to NEVER override A/T, i am in cruise, and i can move the REAL throttles (Which are located next to me on a cabinet) all day long from idle to full, the sim will ignore it.

Again, not sure why it didn't work before, but right now all is good again.
Problem solved, end of discussion on my behave..

You can check page 83 of the introduction PDF for the exact explanation.
