Big disappointment...

After 5 attempts and an entire day of trying to download the new Vector I finally got it and installed it.

Now in my FTX Central I have two FTX Global icons and am missing the hybrid box.

Then I went to Faro in the Yukon Territory and found the Pelly River, a major river in the Yukon, is STILL missing.  I'm 80 years old and just don't have enough time left on the planet to wait for Orbx to work things out

I give up.  Orbx is like a glamorous Las Vegas showgirl.  Pretty to look at.  Exciting to take out on a date,  But too much aggravation.

And can somebody tell me why it takes so long to download stuff from The Flightsim Store?

This afternoon I went to Simmarket and downloaded the Maldives to see if the problem was at my end. A 3gb download in less than 40 minutes just like when I bought it.  Not the hours and hours it takes to get the same size file from The Flightsim Store.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Noel download the latest library and this will reset your FTXC icons. I dont know why ORBX dose not have an auto updater for all of their stuff. It gets really messy when you have all their products and then trying to keep track of all the updates

ZORAN

Noel,

Not sure what the problem is, but, have to ask.  Did you re-install the latest Object Libraries after installing Vector?  I'm not sure if this needs to be done, but I've learned, from my experience and others, that every time you install an Orbx scenery, or update, reinstall the libraries.  That usually fixes the icon situations in FTX Central.

When I downloaded Vector 1.1 from the FlightSim Store, it downloaded in less than 30 minutes.  I used the first Global on the list, and used FlashGet as the download manager.

Hi, if you want more complete vector scenery for Canada, I would suggest you get UTX Canada, I think the vectors in UTX Canada are far more complete, and the river you mentioned should be included.

UTX Canada makes FTX Global Vector look like amateur hour! In many locations in Canada (water feature wise), Vector looks hard pressed to improve upon the FSX default scenery.

I really, really like the idea of FTX Global Vector. Its a one stop solution and will work well with the Open LC and FTX Global texture products.

But, and its a big but, UTX USA, Canada and Europe are so far in front in terms of accuracy that at this moment in time, FTX Vector is simply not a viable option.

The UTX / FTX Global texture combo works out pretty well. You just have to disable the LUX landclass layer in UTX or else you get some odd mismatches between the custom UTX textures and the FTX Global ones.

Im sticking with this combo until Vector is at version 2 and beyond and then review options. I figure If OpenLC is good, then I can just disable the UTX landclass altogether and go with the Orbx FTX Open LC version.

First, I don't know why I have such a problem downloading large (gigabyte) files from The Flightsim Store.  No matter which site I pick it takes several tries and a long, long time.  As I mentioned I downloaded Aerosoft's Maldives from Simmarket yesterday to see if the problem is at my end.  3 gigabytes in one try in less than 40 minutes.

I'm into train simming too and trying to download the PRR East Route from CLW just can't be done from my computer.  But I can get the 8 files from Trainsim.com in no time at all.

Also, the FTX Central fixed itself when I downloaded and installed the new library.  It seems I just downloaded a library update a coupe weeks ago.  It's getting harder and harder to keep up with all the updates and patches.

Orbx has just become too big for me to handle.  A recalibration of my hobby world is in order.  As I said I am also into train simming and I have a model railroad I am building.  Some downsizing is in order.

I could cover the entire world with exotic routes for my train simulator.  Lots of routes are available.  And I ran into the same thing there I am running into with Orbx.  I had to cut back and limit myself.  So I just have the routes for the part of the world that interests me the most, California, Oregon, Washington,  and British Columbia.  There are no routes available for Alaska.

I'm doing the same thing for FSX and Orbx.  I have just cleaned out and deleted my FSX installation.  I will re-install but limit myself to what I can comfortably handle just as I did with MSTS.  Now that Northern California is out my area of world interest covered by Orbx is about complete with PNW, PFJ, SAK, NRM, CRM, and now NAC.

That should be plenty of Orbx flying scenery for me to handle without having to reinstall Pilots mesh, Global, and Vector.

I'm not a techie.  I don't own a smart phone or a tablet or an iPad.  At my age I just don't want to go through the learning curves.  The same goes for my hobbies.  Even my model railroad has straight old fashion controls as opposed to the new fangled DDC electronic stuff.

It's a hard lesson for me to learn.  I should be in control of my hobbies.  My hobbies shouldn't be in control of me.  It's a hard lesson for me to learn.

That looks like a wise decision. The Orbx regional sceneries are done to a much higher level of realism than the Global products can achieve.

Mike Mann

Agreed Full fat regions are miles ahead and cover large areas and still growing. During sale periods all of ORBX regions sell for $14. Works out pretty cheap

ZORAN

Agreed. The regions are miles ahead of Global. This is by design of course.

When and if the Orbx regions ever reach Ontario and the NE USA and Maritimes, I probably wont need Global full stop.

Until then its the best I have for the area.

Heya Noel,

For a "cranky old curmudgeon" you are doing just fine. I deal with high technology everyday, and while the roar can be deafening at times, it keeps the mind sharp.

And I have the Kodiak - it is my only float plane, and I too use it for environs north of Vancouver. I thought that low-rider stance was deliberate...     Sure makes getting up on plane interesting, like pulling a wheelie before she settles on top of the water.

If you share your updated contact points, I would appreciate it.

Well, over the past few days I did it.

I cleaned the FSX disk and reinstalled.  Then I reinstalled all my Orbx NA sceneries.  Then Pilot's mesh for the Americas.  Then UTX Alaska, UTX Canada, UTX USA, and UTX Tropical America.

Next came FSAddon's Vancouver and Tongass Fjords.  I also added all of Return to Misty Moorings including the shipping.

I also added all the Global airports set 1 through 9  except for Hawaii.

I have all of North America now but concentrating on Orbx NA.

For outside the Orbx NA areas I have added OZX's Grand Canyon and Death Valley and Aerosoft's Fairbanks, Dutch harbor, and Aspen.  Although I have Aerosoft's Anchorage and Sand Francisco I'm leaving them in the box since the Orbx area's do an adequate job with them and I don't fly airliners.

From now on I will only be buying Orbx North America stuff.  And with the Ultimate Terrain covering all of North America including Central America and the Caribbean Global and Vector will be staying in the box too.

About 75% of my flying is done in my Quest Kodiak (land and amphib versions) between Monterrey and Anchorage.  But from time to time I like visiting the Caribbean and other part of North America.

PS...The Quest Kodiak on floats out of the box looks like it's sinking.  I have reworked the contact points section of the aircraft.cfg file to bring it up to looking normal.  If anyone has the Kodiak and would like the contact points data I can put them up here.

Revised contact points for Quest Kodiak on floats.

For some reason I wasn't able to copy the text here so I transcribed it by hand.  I don't think I made any mistakes.  You're on your own with these.  They work for me.  You may want to tweak them to suite yourself.  The significant columns are three and four (-5.50, -8.20)

When you use these and land on a runway with wheels down sparks will fly so you have to disable the sparks in the EFFECTS folder.

Thank you, Sir!
