March 22, 201412 yr Hi ! After four years i want to build a new pc for fsx and i wonder which config would be optimal to run it at high settings with PMDG ORBX and REX addons. I've read on the 777 product page that latest nvidia cards are recommended for best performance. I wonder about this, cause i always thought fsx can not profit from newer videocards. Am i wrong? Since the cpu is most important for good fsx performance, i wonder which one to choose. I'm thinking about the 3770k and to overclock it to 4,3 or some GHZ. Is there a better CPU with the same price/performance ratio? Thank you in advance ! Chris

March 23, 201412 yr Commercial Member Something like this is what I'd build right now: CPU: Intel i7 4770K Mobo: Z87 chipset based board by one of the reputable makers - Asus, MSI, Gigabyte etc RAM: 8 or 16GB DDR3 1600 GPU: Nvidia GTX 770 or 780 based card (I like the EVGA brand) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO SSD New GPUs and CPUs will be out later this year too by the way - we're at the end of the current hardware generation's cycle. March 24, 201412 yr Hey Tabs, good to see you replied here. If I may jump in Chris' topic, I'm in the same plan of upgrading my PC soon... Thing is my budget is tight and it doesn't allow me to buy the entire machine at once. So far I'm planning to buy everything BUT the videocard, which I plan to buy in around 2-3 months. Until then I'd use my old ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB. Here's what I've thought of so far: Processor: Intel Core i7 4770k @ 3.5GHz (to be overclocked) Processor Cooling: Corsair Hydro H100i Liquid Cooling Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Extreme or ASUS Maximus VI Formula ROG Power Supply: Corsair TX850 or AX850 Since I'm no expert at RAM memory specs, I'm in doubt between two products - Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2x8GB) 2133MHz (CMY16GX3M2A2133C11) and Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz (CMD16GX3M2A1600C9). By just looking at the numbers it seems that the Vengeance has a higher clock speed (2133MHz vs 1600Mhz of the Dominator), but the Dominator one is more expensive and has a lower latency. Which should I pick? And, what do you think about the rest of the specs? Thanks in advance.
March 24, 201412 yr latency is more important than clock speed. but keep in mind that 16gb will probably be slower than 8gb. and i hope that your next gpu will be nvidia, that alone should give you a performance improvement. i would actually replace that first and the rest later when your wallet allows it. i'd suggest my link above to Nick's guide. Hi ! Thanks for your reply! In wonder whether i shoukd take the 3770k or the newer 4770k. I want to overclock it anyways. And there was one arcticle on tomshardware which said that the performance difference is not that much and overclocking for the 4770k is more difficult than with the 3770k. Don't know what's right... One question that i couldn't answer is which memory to take. This simforum post says that latency is major to clock in terms of performance. But what is the best memory if i want to overclock the cpu to lets say 4,4 or 4,5 GHZ? Thank you in advance! Chris
March 24, 201412 yr the one that Nick suggests is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231638, and that goes for overclocking as well. Denis Kosbeck KPHX
March 25, 201412 yr Commercial Member There was a big test done by one of the hardware sites that basically showed that higher clockspeed RAM is a wash and not worth it over the standard 1600 for a gaming machine. You get more memory bandwidth but you trade it for more latency. Spending a ton of extra money for very little benefit doesn't seem like the greatest idea to me - I have a 1600 8GB set that I just bought a couple months ago and I see no issues whatsoever from it. March 25, 201412 yr Author 1600 is what i was aiming for aswell. It'S just hard to find the optimal timings described in Nick's post. (cl6) i found cl7-8-8-24.. Don't know if that is so much important.. No i have to decide wheather to take the 3770k or the 4770k. From the specs both have the same clock, same cache. The Internet says when it comes to overclocking the 4770k gets more hot which makes it harder to reach high clockings. Both cost almost the same. So i really wonder which one to take. Any experience ? Thanks guys! Chris
March 25, 201412 yr The mobos for the I4xxx series of cpus are superior in features to that of the 1155 equivalent, ie asus z87 pro vs z77 pro. If you have the budget and you're not sure how to configure the hardware for FSX and heavy add-ons then follow Nick's latest guide to the 'tee' and you'll be in the sky in no time, with no stress and have all the ''''headroom'''' possible at this moment in time. note: I'm not the type to spend $300+ on ram but, for a few dollars more you can get a lil more ''''headroom'''' with the corsair 2133 c9, and it's readily available. Hi Ken! I see that the mobos are better for the 4 th generation. Nick's post says, that the Cache of the CPU is an important for fsx. I jsut read an article which said that the cache between the 3770k and 4770k are almost the same. For the 4770k the max. overclocking i will reach is 4,2 GHZ. For the 3770 it could be 4,5 or 4,6. So i just wonder what will be better for fsx, new mobo with 4,2 haswell or old generation 3770l with 4,5-4,6. Maybe it will be almost the same performance, but i don't know how FSX reacts and just want to buy the best Thanks Chris
March 26, 201412 yr Well, 500mhz might be hard to ignore, huh? :-) There is a discussion about the imminent release of a new Intel CPU at the AVSIM hardware forum. If the new CPU is an 1150 socket that might be something to consider also.
