mouse operations difficult while VC is shifting around

Featured Replies

I zoom in closer to look at MCP then hold mouse right or left button on HDG SEL knob to change heading.

Now, the knob takes some time to reach desired heading. At the same time the plane starts turning and the virtual cockpit starts changing position beneath my mouse pointer.

i.e. while I'm trying to change HDG SEL the plane starts to turn and the instrument panel and heading knob starts shifting position (relative to my mouse) thus making it difficult to keep my mouse on the correct spot to continue changing HDG SEL. I have to follow the moving VC with my mouse but this is difficult and causes clicks on wrong spots.

Is this a symptom of the "dynamic head movement" described on page 0.00.123 of Introduction manual ?

(so that it is actually the camera position that is changing WHILE I'm trying to keep mouse hold-click on a tiny spot)

Could it also be caused by some G-force setting in FSX ?

I have GEffect=False, but I still see head movement when accelerating.

For me it is virtually impossible to hold a constant mouse click on a precise spot in the VC anytime the plane is turning.

I will have to use the 2D MCP (which doesn't look as nice).

Same in my case.

There is absolutely nothing unusual about this at all.

And if you have EZDOK (EZCA), it can be more difficult depending on your settings (but you can alter it and reduce it down if required).

Mind you, I've spent a lot of hours in full motion sims (737 800 & 747 400) and it can be difficult at times using your own hands/fingers to manipulate various buttons and dials

in the flight deck whilst there is some bumping and buffeting from winds (and even whilst you're taking off or taxiing depending on how smooth the ground is)

There is a bug of FSX. Even if you don't use any camera addon, FSX default camera position changes slightly depend on airplane's heading.

It's a bug. you can't fix it.

Exactly.  I know I've posted this before, but I'll post it here, too:

While I normally just poke at the radio panel with my forefinger, this time I'm bracing my entire hand against the panel because of the turbulence (the button I'm operating is under my thumb).

Yes.  There's a certain amount that cannot be eliminated in FSX, unfortunately.  Either way, I've never truly found it to be an issue.  It can be frustrating at times, but I've never had to abandon the VC (or use a pop up to manage it).  If rolling wheels is taking too long, consider getting a mouse with a roll wheel.  That speeds the rolling up.

I have GEffect=False, but I still see head movement when accelerating.

You need to set momentum effect=false in cameras.cfg and set all the values under [DynamicHeadMovement] to 0.0 in fsx.cfg. If you do both, things will improve. You will at least get rid of the excessive movement with acceleration. You will still get the unavoidable VC eyepoint drift with heading but this is much slower movement and won't affect you if you aren't turning.

As for EZdok, I've reinstalled FSX recently after updating to Windows 7 and haven't yet reinstalled it. So far I'm not missing it. I used to disable all the random and dynamic head movement anyway and just use it for panel view selection.

While it's true that motion does affect you in real flying, in practice you have physical knobs and pushbouttons to select so can easily touch and rotate the controls. Also you can brace your hand against the panel as in Kyle's photo. The mouse can't do that and the clickspots drift off annoyingly. I find the 777X and NGX clickspots are very well laid out and easy to use, but on the MD-11 they are very hard to find and keep track of. Especially when you need to push and pull knobs as well as turn them.

Ezdok is the sure solution to problems like this. My typical setup has the pilot view with head movement effect on purely for the realistic viewing pleasure. Then I have camera positions for CDU, MCP, Console, Overhead or as needed. These views are typically set with no effect so that the panel does not change position on the screen regardless of what the aircraft is doing. Sometimes I'll have TrackIR enabled for certain views if it helps.

Even then it was still a chore with everything bouncing around, but you're definitely right that you don't have the same advantage in the sim.

OK, thanks all for feedbacks.

I have improved my PMDG777 flying experience by setting all momentum effect=false in cameras.cfg and all [DynamicHeadMovement] to 0 in fsx.cfg (these changes resulted in slight improvement).

Then, using PMDG custom keys menu in FMC, I mapped SPD, HDG and ALT push switches and inc/dec to 9 different keys = this makes things mucho easier. (Amazing how many FSX key mappings are not needed!)

PMDG777 = best ever sim experience!!!

Ezdok cannot stop the eye point movement with heading change. You can save a zoomed in view of the MCP which might help of course. But otherwise, using Ezdok with DHM disabled is no better than using the VC with FSX momentum effect disabled.

The fact that you had to say "But otherwise" means it is better. The zoom makes it bigger and easier to click. EzDok adds the flexibility.

It's better but not essential, which was my point. You can get the same improvement with mouse+space bar and zoom in with mousewheel. Only slightly less convenient.

I'm not knocking Ezdok. I've used it since the NGX came out until very recently.

You do know there is a pop up 2D of the MCP that doesn't move, don't you?

You do know that he referred to using just that in the last sentence of the very first post, don't you?
