June 23, 201411 yr The other thing is accommodation. Drop 300 punters on Adelaide and the hotels will cope (most of the time). Alice? Mike Dryden
June 23, 201411 yr The strict quarantine and customs laws in Australia are also a facor that need to be considered when diverting, especially for international flights. There was this incident last year, when a flight diverted to Kalgoorlie, but then couldn't return to Perth even though the weather had cleared, because the crew had been on duty too long. As Kal doesn't have scheduled international arrivals, this left the passengers stranded on the plane until customs and immigration officers got there (7hr drive) to clear them for entry. They finally arrived in Perth roughly 18hrs after they were scheduled to. In my eyes, the remoteness of WA is one of the resons why it is so beautiful, but it obviously can throw up some unique and challenging situations for flight operations. June 23, 201411 yr Hi Wes, it is definitely an available alternate and it has had Aero Arg and LAN in there before. They have had a couple of 77W's there before (including an Air NZ one). Mark Ward
June 23, 201411 yr Hi Wes, it is definitely an available alternate and it has had Aero Arg and LAN in there before. They have had a couple of 77W's there before (including an Air NZ one). After reading up on it its classed as a secondary altn, meaning if NZAA and NZCH is closed they go to Ohakea. Pretty cool tho! I live just a few km from NZHN which is apparently capable of 767 class AC, I wonder if we would ever see a 787 diversion? I think perhaps the wingspan might be an issue. Time for an upgrade!! Wes Meyer
June 23, 201411 yr Commercial Member Didn't even visit the best part of Aus Kyle :P You think over east doesn't have any airports, try flying in WA! I'll have to venture out that way. The list of airports on wikipedia doesn't look too shabby, but compared to what we have in a similar area over here, it's pretty sparse. Also: Is the weather over in the Sydney area "normal" for this time of year? Departed SYD and got rocked from ground through maybe 6000. Brisbane was okay. Canberra was nuts! Mod/sev turb from 5000 down to the ground, with 16 knot wind (luckily only 20 off centreline), and enroute wind for all legs at about 100-125 from the west. The strict quarantine and customs laws in Australia are also a facor that need to be considered when diverting, especially for international flights. I still laugh at this... (The following is meant to be mostly a joke, based on an overly-American viewpoint of the outside-of-America world) You guys have snakes that'll kill you; spiders that'll kill you; jellyfish that'll kill you; bees that'll kill you; (I'm pretty sure of) lizards that'll kill you; snails that'll kill you (yes, snails, people...SNAILS); and probably a half dozen other things that'll kill you, and you're worried about international passengers??? Oh, and that hoppy, fluffy thing with the tail? Yeah, it might kill you, too...or at least haul off and maim you a bit...haha. Kyle Rodgers
June 23, 201411 yr The list of airports on wikipedia doesn't look too shabby, but compared to what we have in a similar area over here, it's pretty sparse. Some of those airports are also privately owned (by mining companies) so you need their permission to go there. A good chunk of those probably also only have a gravel or dirt runway, so you wouldn't want to be operating jets into them. Although we do have one operator, Cobham, who pioneered the gravel kit for the Avro RJ series of aircraft http://www.cobham.com/about-cobham/mission-systems/about-us/aviation-services/commercial-aviation-operations/products-and-services/fly-in-fly-out-%28fifo%29/gravel-runway-operations.aspx Is the weather over in the Sydney area "normal" for this time of year? Highish wind speeds are quite normal for all of Australia, on the ground and high in the FLs. Perth is the third windiest capital city in the world, if the winds are below 10-15kts its a pretty calm day! We had a large storm front come through here late last week (+TSRA, V/35G55), so I expect you were getting the tail end of that as it passed over Sydney (not really sure of the usual conditions in Sydney as I've never lived there). Light to moderate turbulence and some wind-shear definitely normal around the Perth area due to the escarpment to the east which tumbles the prevailing wind around the airport area. The winds at the higher flight levels are strong more often than not, just look at skyvector over the Great Australian Bight. The other day on flightradar I saw a QTR 777 cruising to Melbourne at 650+ kts! I still laugh at this... Yep gotta watch out for all the creepy crawlies!!! (and the tourists!) hahaha "If you can't solve and equation with calculus, you're not using enough calculus" - A wise friend
June 23, 201411 yr Commercial Member Some of those airports are also privately owned (by mining companies) so you need their permission to go there. Yeah - I did notice that a bunch of them were private. Over here, that can still mean public use (no prior permission required). An example over here would be Woodwind fly in. The sectionals list it as (Pvt) to warn people that PPR might be required, but a check on their site says it's open to anyone. Interestingly, that's where my old trusty time-building beater met its demise at the hands of inexperience and a lack of understanding of DA/ADM... We had a large storm front come through here late last week (+TSRA, V/35G55), so I expect you were getting the tail end of that as it passed over Sydney (not really sure of the usual conditions in Sydney as I've never lived there). Could be - it was a bit rainy over the field. Yep gotta watch out for all the creepy crawlies!!! (and the tourists!) hahaha Luckily, we don't really have the same animals to contend with over here, but the tourists...well...if you've ever heard of the Smithsonian and the National Mall in Washington DC, my office is right on top of the Smithsonian Metro station. Ask me how many times I've missed my train home because of a herd of witless tourists trying to figure out the turnstyles, or just standing around like a herd of stupid sheep looking for direction...haha. If anyone sees me on the nightly news, it might be under the headline "Northern Virginia Man Arrested After Assaulting Tourists With Foam Bat." Kyle Rodgers
June 24, 201411 yr Yeah - I did notice that a bunch of them were private. It's always a good idea to check the ERSA (En-Route Supplement Australia) for more info regarding the operations into any airport, especially the private fields. For example the page for the Telfer Mine airport. 24hr PPR and the airport closed at certain times due to the mine blasting, wouldn't want to rock up just as they started and have to divert. If anyone sees me on the nightly news, it might be under the headline "Northern Virginia Man Arrested After Assaulting Tourists With Foam Bat." Hahaha, got a good chuckle out of that one! Don't even get me started on our rubbish public transport system. "If you can't solve and equation with calculus, you're not using enough calculus" - A wise friend

June 24, 201411 yr Melbourne's Trams are fun. Trains on the other hand... They run well enough. Unless it is hot. or cold. or wet. or 5 o'clock in the afternoon. or the weekend. or peak hour. and I think that just about covers everything :P Trains that are late is just the start. Cancelled trains etc. The worst is trains that are late and decide to 'catch up' by missing a few stops. Flinders Street station is hillarious at peak hours, with trains coming in as a "Please wait for the announcement" train. Being announced as a service to, say, Watergardens, then 2 minutes later (without it having moved an inch) suddenly telling all passengers to get out and change because it is now an Upfield train. Meanwhile the train which is now sitting just a few metres short of the platform is now late because the one on the platform has been sitting there for 4 minutes playing musical chairs. On the Airport side of things, YMML Melbourne has the only CAT III ILS in Australia (Rwy 16)Rwy 34 has no ILS at all though. You won't see a Dreamliner into NZHN and the 763 can only go in there very light! They did get a 77W (and 772) and A340 into NZWN - which I believe has a shorter runway than HLZ? But probably bigger and better taxiways though. Wes Meyer
