DoveTail Games Buys Licensing Deal with Microsoft

Might be nice for an MS press release to show up here...

DTG's press release WAS an MS release. What do I mean by that? We have dealt with MS in the past over such things and I am fairly confident in saying that DTG's PR was vetted, word smithed and approved by MS prior to its release. Ergo, that release in my opinion, is as close as you are going to get from MS on this license agreement.

So I'm happy that dovetail is willing to try and revive a product that came out 2006/2007, while they are not perfect, they are the ones willing to give it a go. My hats is off to them, and we should support them,  just to see where this goes.

Just an interested observer here, because as an XPX pilot I think flight sims are healthier with good competition. I would love to see someone, anyone, light a fire under Austin's butt and hire a few more developers to expand that product.

But about that statement above... as I understand it, this isn't Dovetail "reviving a product that came out in 2006," i.e. Flight Simulator. Here's what was quoted in yesterday's Seattle Times article:  http://blogs.seattletimes.com/brierdudley/2014/07/09/microsofts-flight-simulator-returns-sort-of/

"This partnership is perfectly timed to support our expansion into new areas of simulation,” Dovetail Chief Executive Paul Jackson said in a release. Jackson said the company is looking into new flight-simulation games. But don’t count on a new version of the classic “Flight Simulator” anytime soon.

Under its deal with Microsoft, Dovetail will distribute the circa 2006 “Flight Simulator X” through Steam, the PC game service and store operated by Bellevue-based Valve. New versions of that particular game would have to come from Microsoft. It retained all development rights to “Flight Simulator,” according to Xbox spokesman David Dennis.

So they're not allowed to touch the FSX code at all. Except for Steam integration, and maybe restoring the multiplayer support through Steam. Apparently they also have access to the Flight code, which could be a basis for whatever they want to do for their DLC-driven business model.

This doesn't sound to me like it's a possibility for moving the core FS engine forward in the marketplace. Which I'd love to see, because I don't want X-Plane -- as much as I like it -- to be the only sim out there in 10 or 15 years, when we're on a completely different PC platform that it has to run on. I don't care what my investment in planes or scenery is, I want options going forward.

According to what? As believable and logical as that is, I've got yet seen a single bit of proof that the deal included access to the code for Flight.

From that same article quoted above:

"Dovetail Games will use the software engine powering the game to develop new games, including a new concept that it expects to release in 2015. The company has had success with a similar game called “Train Simulator.”

If they're not allowed to touch the FSX code in any significant way, then that has to be the "Flight" code, as a reasonable assumption, yes? I know we're just shooting in the dark here without further info, but that's how I'm reading it.

Did... did you... did you really buy that?

Of course not.. That screenshot is pulled right from the Steam store.. That's a screenshot they're using to sell that DLC.

Brandon, see my earlier post in this thread and the quote that I posted.

Second to last screenshot. The products they pack up as DLC are wildly inconsistent in quality. Always have been, always will be. It's what happens when you heavily rely on outsourcing your content. Note, that DLC was just released yesterday and will cost you $40

If my FSX scenery looked as good as: http://store.steampowered.com/app/222622/ and performed well,

I would be crapping my pants for about a week straight.

Their routes are great looking and always have.. Paul Jackson has said some of the latest routes that they have developed have cost over a million to produce..

Kind of discredits a certain poster and his "all their DLC is junk" posts.
