One engine taxi

Featured Replies

Hi!

I tried to do a one engine taxi to gate... but that proved to be impossible...

The plane was at a stand still unless i maxed the running engine completely, then the airplane started going in circles.

Is it supposed to be possible to do one engine taxi at all?

Fsuipc has a lua file for dynamic friction. Works wonders

haha excuse my lack fo knowledge but what is a lua file?:=)

It's part of the FSUIPC download.  Unzip the example modules file throw the dynamic friction lua in the modules main folder.  Done.

It's like a modifier to my understanding.  I can't really explain it.

While we are authorized to do single engine taxi at my company it is almost never done.  It takes a significant amount of thrust to get the airplane moving on one engine.  About the only time we ever do it is if we know we will have a long taxi delay and even then most guys will taxi out on both engines and shut one down after we are at the hold point.

Niklas,

first off, definately download the lua file from FSUIPC,it makes the sim even more immersive,as for single engine taxi operations,it is done, but not all the time,if you are interested, you could check out this article:http://www.aviationpros.com/article/10467486/single-engine-taxi-program-will-reduce-emissions-and-save-fuel

as for the plane moving in circles, basic conservation of angular momentum, same thing for a helicopter,if it was to have only one-propeller,it would rotate in a direction(the body of the helicopter) opposite to that of the direction in which the propeller rotates. So the behaviour is normal, but of course you need to steer the aircraft, unless you wanna make big as circles..lol :P

Lua is a simple programming language. In this case it enables the friction patch to be adjustable. You don't have to programme it yourself, it's all documented.

You don't need to use the Lua file though. FSUIPC also has a built in correction which you enable with an edit to FSUIPC.INI. This covers the basic mod to correct the ground friction coefficients. The Lua file allows you to customise the friction mod and make it more sophisticated. If, like me you don't have a registered copy of FSUIPC then you can't use the Lua extension of the friction mod anyway.

Boeing actually recommends against single engine taxi in the 737 series aircraft.

That doesn't mean airlines have to follow what Boeing says because, as you say, they are just recommendations. The airline is allowed to change the FCOM to meet their needs as long as the procedures still meet regulatory requirements.

Don't think I said anything like that in my post. I just thought people reading the thread my be interested to know what the manufacturer says about the procedure.
