Getting into a cockpit

Featured Replies

I am going to be flying LH from ohare to frankfurt this summer then to warsaw, and i was wondering. how is LH and visiting the cockpit? i have been into a JAL 744 cockpit when it was on the ground becuase my dad works for Flying Foods and at the time he only serviced JAL. but other than that, never. and how do you go about it? just ask the F/A or what? and is possible to get into it in flight? thanksadam

I used to fly over 100,000 miles a year with Air Canada so had a Super Elite card. That would get me in the cockpit almost anytime, and 9 times out of 10 they'd let me stay up there for the landing. Since 9/11 the rules are much stricter. In fact you can only get up there if you have a uniform on. Even if you're a pilot with the airline, and have flown with the guys up front, you're not allowed up there without the uniform. Don't know about the other airlines, but I'd imagine it's much stricter all around.billg

I have to fly with LH regularly so rest assured that you may be allowed to take a look into the cockpit only after landing. If you are flying on a 747-400 you will be barely be able to get near the cockpit door if you do not own a business class ticket, if flying on a A340 the chances will be better.Btw.: Before 9/11 LH captains were very generous if you had asked them.Greetings from Germany, Tom.

I remeber being in a CP air DC-8 cockpit back in the late 70's for most of my flight to England. Sadly it is hard to get in one now.XP Home SP2Asus P4P800-SE Intel 3.0GHZDDR 400 D/C 2x512MBLeadtek 6800GT 256MB (71.84)SB AudigyMSFF2 & X45 throttleSee you in the fence...CYYZ

In flight NEVER.. rules are the doors are LOCKED!After flight though, doesn't seem to be a problem. On my trip to Maui I poked my head in on every flight.. CRJ, A320, and 767 (All Air Canada) The guys seem a little more anxious to get outta there though these days after sitting with the door locked tight for hours on end.Chris

Adam,Despite the negative answers you've been getting here don't let that discourage you. I always ask even after 11/9 and on the SAS flights I've done over the atlantic I've always been invited up to the flight deck. Granted you have to leave when entering Canadian and/or US airspace but up until then I was sitting up front chatting away with the captain (while the F/O was fiddeling away on the speed selector on the MCP). So it is possible, even though I've noted a much strikter attitude even on the european carriers after 11/9.Good luck,

Indeed. If LH is anything like KLM you won't even be allowed to walk into businessclass to use the toilet (for example if all other toilets are in use) unless you have a businessclass ticket. The curtains will be closed and noone allowed past them who doesn't work there. People have been turned back who only wanted to talk with friends who had businessclass tickets...

thanks guys for the replies. so do you just ask to F/A if it would be alright with the captain or what?adam

Hi Adam,I hope you can get into the cockpit. I tried on an Air New Zealand B744 flight from KLAX to NZAA last year (I had an exit row and the chief purser was right opposite me on take-off, so we had time to chat).I was denied, even trying with the pilot's license thing (used to make a diffeence). I was told that there may have been a chance on any other route, but anything going to or from the US (I can't explain the "from" direction) is now subject to a unique set of security rules that bans anyone from the cockpit that is rev and/or has no business being there.But- it's worth a try- or try going through a Canadian city to Germany on LH.Good luck.Bruce.
