The FDE is not milder. we made it as close as we could get to the real thing. We tried hard.

Well, that makes me feel a little less incompetent.  While googling for a 'how to fly' tutorial (haven't found one) I found a thread where you'd posted an alternate FDE for people that felt it wasn't 'twitchy' enough so I wasn't sure if that was incorporated.  Also, since I just got it, do I have all the service packs?  It is hugely fun to fly!  Hugely!  Every simmer should have a good helicopter, especially if they have Orbx products!

If you bought it in the past week, you have the most recent which includes a newly revised Fde. It's more realistic than the twitchy which was, some said, too hard to fly.

I picked up the 407...aaaaand I have no idea what I'm doing.  I took it for a 'flight'(<---notice the quotes) around KRDD to the hospital and back.  Those were some brave souls at the helipad.  Brave men.  Then a flight down the river and back to the airport.  I need a tutorial bad.  Boy, you see so much more in the Orbx scenery from a helicopter!!

Read somewhere that the FDE was made milder for us non-rotorheads.  I can barely make it hover as it is!

I've actually found the FDE in the 407 to be so much better than the R22, because it's so much easier to hover and maneuver than the default R22 FDE... ;)

I totally agree, I spent a very frustrating evening with the 407.   At least you were able to get in the air.   I could not get it to start using the instructions.  I tried watching you tube videos but they played too fast and were not much help.  I am going to try again today but this is frustrating.

Did you go through the menu manager and toggle the settings for the liveries? Seems I read somewhere to try that, otherwise check their official forums I know I've seen other posts similar to yours. You'll have to send roadburner an email as the support forum is hidden from view until you provide your order number.

I started with one already running...so, cheated.  There are only one or two videos on flying helicopters that I've found.  This one and it's part two were helpful, especially about the eyepoint and small adjustments.

When I was flying it, it occurred to me how much more difficult it is to fly a helicopter than a fixed-wing.  It's not nearly as intuitive.  If you give an airplane in calm wind enough speed, it's pretty much going to want to fly.  A helicopter, not so much...you're, basically, hanging under a propeller, tilting it around to get the affect you want.  I started at Redding again this morning and started out by trying to hover taxi, in a reasonable way (not pretty), out to the runway and then hovering for a while.  I found that setting up my view with a wider view of the world...zooming out to 70% or so and making adjustments helped when trying to maintain slow flight.  Peripheral vision seems so very important in these aircraft.

Hey Aerosoft and Flight1!  Take a look here.  50% off!  Try it sometime.  We'd love you for it!  Enough with the lame 20% off boxed products BS!

Can you include PMDG to that list? ;-)

Great video, really describes the basics.  I wish there was a video like this for proper start up of the 407.

There is. The 407 startup is simple. 5 switches and you're done..

I found several.  Here's one..

and the doc checklist works well.  Did a cold-n-start startup with no problem using it.

I was able to follow the checklist and start it this morning.  My problem was two fold.  I have a CH Throttle Quadrant and a Logitech extreme joystick.   With aircraft I need to have the Logitech throttle full forward or I sometimes have issues with the aircraft throttle (it has a mind of its own and moves back and forth).  I had the same problem with the B407 but solved it by moving the joystick throttle to the full opposite direction.  Secondly, I needed to have my CH Mixture lever in the full rich position and I was able to start without issue.

I am now really enjoying this helicopter.  As they say, baby steps.   Take it slow and easy. My default airport is Orbx KHQM and I am enjoying just creating short flight plans using the nearest function on the GTN750.   I even landed on a sand spit on my way to my destination.  Now if I can only land at the spot where I intend too instead of some other place on the airport and hopping to the helipad.

I have to go visit all of my Orbx scenery...so much to see.  In terms of landing on the target...yeah, I'm with you.  I tend to overshoot.
