March 28, 201511 yr Hello everyone, I have just recently flown VATSIM's CTP 2015 westbound. On final approach, the FS made the error noises and crashed. This is strange for me because I am using Direct X 10. I have flown much longer flights 15-17 hour flights without this anomaly, but on this short flight from EHAM-KBOS, an OOM!!! I thought OOMs couldn't happen under Direct X 10. I am using Steve's DirectX fixer to make everything work. Is there some explanation for this problem? Thanks, 1251452 PS: the acars (VAFS sucks) also failed to recover the flight, so all is lost. 1251452-Matthew Tan
March 28, 201511 yr I thought OOMs couldn't happen under Direct X 10. OOM's occur when you run out of VAS. The longer the flight (EHAM-KBOS is not a short flight), the more detail in the flight, the faster your processor, the higher your settings in the FSX.cfg and display driver settings, the more likely you will run out of VAS. See the AVSIM CTD Guide regarding OOM's/VAS. OOM's can and do happen in DX10 Preview mode. DX10 does provide about a 10% gain in performance over DX9 but, again, it depends on your settings. The AVSIM CTD Guide shows you how to monitor VAS during a flight using the FSUIPC utility. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! March 29, 201511 yr Author ok, my mistake, thanks for the correction on DX10. My question now, however, is what caused the sim to OOM when I've flown longer flights between payware airports? Was it traffic? Something else? Thanks, 1251452 1251452-Matthew Tan
March 29, 201511 yr When you are about to run out of VAS memory (OOM error) there is a BONG noise that repeats every few seconds just before the sim crashes... some people when they hear the first bong immediately save the flight at that point (you need to be quite quick) and if aircraft is capable, do a Panel State save. Then they do a reset or reload, recover the plane and continue with more fresh available VAS memory. Don't think it's an ideal method but can help you finish your flight... may not keep your virtual airline software running if your using it, I guess. aero
March 29, 201511 yr ok, my mistake, thanks for the correction on DX10. My question now, however, is what caused the sim to OOM when I've flown longer flights between payware airports? Was it traffic? Something else? Thanks, 1251452 Very likely that traffic was the factor that pushed your VAS past the limit. Especially when flying in a heavily-attended VATSIM event like this one. The added VAS burden from rendering other player aircraft as you approached your destination may have been too much. March 29, 201511 yr When you are about to run out of VAS memory (OOM error) there is a BONG noisethat repeats every few seconds just before the sim crashes... I'm guessing this is the fsuipc utility as it sends out an audible warning. After a flight I usually check my fsuipc.log to see if there were any warnings. It also provides fps info and, if set up to monitor VAS, will record usage throughout the flight. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! March 29, 201511 yr Author Thanks everyone for the replies, Yes, I heard the warnings as I came in on final and I had a restore point set up (acars didn't work with it though :( ) I think it is the traffic as well, it is the only differentiating factor between this fateful flight and others. I didn't know fsuipc kept a log, I will check that as soon as possible. Thanks again, 1251452 1251452-Matthew Tan
March 29, 201511 yr I have a link to the fsuipc.log on my desktop where I can readily take a look at it after a flight. The log is overwritten whenever you start the sim. I also have a link to the Modules folder too on the desktop as I usually save a log for comparison with other flights where I might have changed settings. March 29, 201511 yr Also, While some aircraft don't have save panel functions, it doesn't mean the panel cannot be reloaded. For example, all the CS aircraft can have their panels reloaded with everything the way you left it by: 1) Start a simulator in the stock C172. 2) Load your flight. Walllaaaah! Restored flight like nothing was ever wrong. Daniel Moser
March 30, 201511 yr With regards to the Virtual Airline problem... I used to use the VAFS system (Virtual Airline Financial Services). It would auto save your flight every X minutes (X = user settable) and if your sim crashed or there were other hiccups you could reset or reload to the last save and carry on with the VA client still working and calculating as normal... it worked great - I think you need Full Ver FSUIPC for it. http://www.vafinancials.com/v5/index.php aero
March 30, 201511 yr Author Yes, I used the auto save function with VAFS, but the program itself screwed up. (said it couldn't find a log file or something, never happened before). I just remembered something, I use fsinn which uses all fsx aircraft for it's ai database. It was loading the PMDG 777 for AI traffic. This must contribute a great deal of VAS right? It's a pretty detailed model. Is there any way to get fsinn to not use the model? I have plenty of WoAI aircraft to use. 1251452-Matthew Tan
September 19, 201510 yr and if aircraft is capable, do a Panel State save. Apologies for resurrecting a months old thread, but I was extremely curious by what you meant by a 'panel state save'? Are you referring to using a third party utility like 'panel restore' (which has never worked for me). I was under the impression that this was impossible to do in full screen mode ( I know 'panel restore' only works in windowed mode. Maybe you're referring to windowed mode, but I would love to find out that my assumptions were incorrect! I have the fully registered version of FSUIPC BTW. Thank you.
