Hurricane Dennis and my web site

Featured Replies

As some of you know, I am from Mobile, Alabama. The computer that hosts my email, support forum and web sites for FSAutoStart and FS9 Configurator is also located in Mobile. As things look now, it is very likely that I will lose power and/or internet access sometime Sunday 10 July 2005.I will try to have everything back up as soon as possible. To any other users who live in the area: Good luck and stay dry!

Ken, you need to transfer your website to AVSIM! :) Our servers are buried in the bowels of a COLO in northern Virginia and safe from all but the ugliest of natural events!!!

Good luck Ken,Dennis looks pretty nasty.take care outthere Sir.cheersJP.

Ken,I hope your not one of those... (well I'll keep it to myself) who choose to "brave the storm." :) You see people on the news sitting on their porches like the day before the storm saying, "We're not leavin." No thanks! I don't live in hurricane areas, but I'd get the heck out of there if the police and fire department were recommending an evacuation. Anyway, like said above, stay dry. And while I'm replying to this, I'd like to thank you for FS9 Auto Start, and FS9 Configurator, they are both invaluable programs that I wouldn't want to be without.Jeff

Ken -Are you going to try to ride this out?I was just looking at the latest weather models and they don't look very good for Mobile. And this storm has endured pretty well with going through the mountains of Cuba.

Ken,I'll be riding it out in Semmes. Hopefully, we will get a "near miss" from this one.Good luck and be safe.

<<"We're not leavin." >> Right Jeff. When those folks get divorced, they're still related!(-:

Apparently all of Mobile county is under a mandatory evacuation...makes no sense to me but...

Fingers crossed for all in the potential path of Dennis. Down in NZ we don't get hurricanes but cyclones occasionally drop in . As someone who's felt the effects of flooding first-hand I understand your concerns. The best advice I can give is make sure your insurance is up-to-date and that any pets have ID tags. Natural disasters makeb pets go a bit loopy and they often get lost. Judging by the bayous (excuse my spelling) I'm thinking storm surge is the biggest threat for coastal Alabama? CheersLungs

Well sir, we are lucky up here where I live. Worst storms I can remember had winds of around 75mph in Seattle. We've only had, I think, 3 in my lifetime. Course, we have to worry about "the big one" which the sci boys are telling us "WILL happen" (someday). To all our friends in the area; "Keep ya powder dry, peeps!":D

A blanket mandatory evacuation of the entire county makes absolutely no sense. This hurricane is no Camille by a long shot and may not be a Frederick or an Ivan. Mandatory south of I-10, flood prone areas and mobile homes, yes, but everyone in the entire county is a little overboard.

Mobile County is a large county, measuring approximately 30 miles east-west by 50-60 miles north-south. Storm surge flooding is a threat in the immediate coastal area and flooding from rainfall is a threat along rivers and streams and other low-lying areas. However, the vast majority of Mobile County is not threatened by storm surge. Wind and tornadoes are the biggest threat for the vast majority of residents here. However, you can get those effects over 100 miles or more inland from a hurricane. Most of us here do not take hurricanes lightly and do not underestimate their destructive power and danger. But, it doesn't make sense for everyone to evacuate and drive 100 miles or more only to experience essentially the same conditions.Good advice on the insurance and pets. Do you all call tropical cyclones "willy-willys" in NZ?

Mandatory south>of I-10, flood prone areas and mobile homes, yes, but everyone>in the entire county is a little overboard.>Hi Ken... and dawg...I'm some east of you, in North Central Florida, and it appears now that we will miss this one. I have been praying this morning for safety for those of you in its path.Seems to me that the mass evacuation is becoming a "pc" thing with the authorities. The media is intent on looking for any small piece of evidence that someone in authority was not totally omniscient... if there is loss of life, even one, they will blame anyone and everyone who could have been responsible.Witness... the comment by a reporter in the UK today. After being told by Scotland Yard that there was perhaps a two minute delay in response time to the bombings, the reporter asked, (paraphrase) "could some lives have been saved if you had reacted sooner"?Thus, the authorities often decide in overreactive measures. It surely doesn't make sense, is expensive for everyone, eventually raises taxes, and seems to save little in either life or property. Folks like to stay and do their best to protect what they have... when it is prudent. My prayers are with you all.donmac
