LDS 767 sounds with PMDG 744.

Featured Replies

I had to try this, the flight deck sounds so much quieter. I love the work LDS did on their sounds. Hopefully we can get a professional sound set for PMDG's 744 (the current one is way too loud in the flight deck)...

According to a post on the PMDG support forum the 747 is known to have a very loud wind noise. I've put the environment sound slider down to make longer flights more enjoyable. :-) Ulf B

I also expressed my doubts about noise level in the 747 cocpkit. But I would never start installing sounds from another airplane - that would be a butchery. I would rather use the volume knob or the configuration options as a last resort. Also convincing statements coming from real 747 pilots on their forum (JaneRachel) who stress that sound are realistic - do impress me, can't dismiss them so easily.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg

Hello. I think wind sound is quite realistic because i just noticed it in one of flight videos which is recorded in the cockpit inside real 744. I made a clip from the full video that shows the full takeoff and accelleration over the transition. You can clearly hear how wind noise increases after he accelerates over flap speeds during end of the clip. Link to download this video(divx,33meg,duration 5 min): http://mbnet.fi/pviljaka/Cathay_Pacific_B7...keoff_divx5.avi (Save as...)

No disrespect to anyone here but I find it funny how people will say that something is not realistic, in this case the sounds, when they have absolutely no experience with the real thing. "I think it should sound like this so who ever made this thing must be wrong, or I have flown in a 747 as a passenger so I know what the cockpit must sound like." :-lol That is silliness people. I wished that instead of putting down the developer and saying that they are unrealistic people would simply say that they do not like them as a matter of taste. Dillon, PMDG's sound set is what I would call professional since they are from a real 747's flight deck and not something someone recorded in the passenger cabin and tweaked to sound "realistic". Now before anyone starts jumping all over me I will admit that I too have been guilty of thinking something is unrealistic and wanting to change it until I have found out the truth. I just do not publicly state it until I know it is fact. I am not trying to put anyone down, I just think that it is a disservice to all to say something is wrong when in fact it is right. Take care you all,Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg

This same type of realistic nonsense was thrown at LDS themselves because people complained the engine sounds were not loud enough! It is realistic to have a loud wind sound. Period. PMDG's sounds are excellent, they could use some work on the exterior, but last time I checked this was a flight simulator, not a passenger or spotter simulator.

Johto,Thanks for the video :-)Ulf B

You guys constantly talk about wind noise, that's not the problem I have with PMDG's sound set. The engine sounds are too loud. LDS's 767 has loud wind noise as well but in a heavy flight deck the engines can barley be heard at times. If the 747's engines were that loud in the flight deck (as PMDG depicts them), passengers couldn't fly on that bird. Coach is right above the wings and every passenger would have to use ear protection. It would be like flying in a C130's belly on your way to Iraq (as far as decibels are concerned)...

Philip I live in Minneapolis MN home of Northwest Airlines. I have more than once been to their Eagan facility and paid for time in their 747 simulators. Wind noise is loud yes but not the engine noise. I do have facts to back up what I'm saying. A good point was raised on the PMDG support form about the simulator not correctly depicting the sound environment. I'm still checking into that but at this time all my buddies that work over there tell me that's not the case. Northwest has spent millions on a training aid that fully prepares their pilots for the real thing. They walk out of training and fly passengers after the countless hours they spend in those Level-D simulators...

Alex the wind noise is fine in the PMDG 747, I have a problem with all the other sounds being just as loud as the wind. LDS gave a smooth transition in that department (takeoff heard engines, climb out at 245kts the engine sound bleeds off in favor of the wind noise). The problem with LDS is they faced a crowd of uninformed people who felt engines should be heard at all times and that was unrealistic. These same people think a MD80 should have loud engine noise in the cockpit and anyone who's flown in one in first class can tell you you only hear the wind noise for the most part on these jets. For the record I was not one of the one's complaining about the sound LDS choose in their first version. I actually liked them better than their 'Service Pak' version (with the exception of spool up). I'm hearing engine noise throughout all phases of flight with the PMDG 744...

Two things to add to this discussion (without saying who's right and who's wrong):1. I have never been in 2 r/w simulators that sounded exactly alike.2. The sound electronically recorded from the cockpit, is not what you hear with your own ears in a cockpit. So, the debate will continue... ;)

BobK

Your right Bob that's why this is such a hard argument to make. Common since should tell anyone,1. Loud wind noise in a 744 cockpit is very realistic2. Engine noise is all but non existent at times especially considering where the engines are located on the plane versus where the cockpit is located. When the engines idle back on climb out you should only hear (a slight hum from the engines) the wind and the various avionics/air conditioners...

You know what Alex after listening to this sound package again last night, the whole thing is excessively loud. All those sounds (wind included) can be brought down a few decibels. Kind of reminds me of the Koch Concord sound set (the afterburner sound in the cockpit was just ridicules). You can still drive home the point of wind noise being a major factor in the 744 without turning up all the sound files to 100%. Turning up the volume doesn't make a song sound better, you just made it louder. In the PMDG options menu I played with the sound volume which only lowered the Avionic sounds. The engine sounds still blared. Maybe if all the sounds were lowered you
