HT off saves VAS and increases fps ...

Featured Replies

Hey steve,

I have a 5820k @4.7 ghz actually running with am 340 (ht on).

Do you think it makes sense to add lp5 for p3d to get better texture loading. I have some lag in texture loading

More LPs allocated will increase initial VAS used, and interrupt the main thread more often, but might produce a better trade-off with some scenery. 6 core HT=On, try AM=1364=(01,01,01,01,01,00)=5LPs or try 1396=(01,01,01,11,01,00)=6LPs pairs second and third threads on third core.

With all the Hyperthreading On/Off; I guess I will share my results also. I have a i7-5820K (6 Core cpu). Yes with all the cores enabled -- there is a huge VAS hit.

I then disabled HT off in the bios, and just running the Sim with 4 cores (Cores 1, 2,3, 4). I let Core 0 and Core 5 be free by using affinity mask set to 30 in the prepar3d.cfg

Now here is the Kicker part of the story (especially for people who are seeing terrain textures being slowly rendered) - I do see that my Core 2 for example is running but at lower task activity vs Core 1, 3 and 4. I was like why is this core low performing.

And then I did this simple trick. I open up Task Manager in Windows 10 and go to Prepar3d, right click on affinity and let the menu show up. I do NOT change anything and just hit ok to the window which shows that I can enable Core 0 and Core 5 if I wanted to. I do NOT enable any other core as VAS spike will happen. Just click on "oK" and viola the Core 2 is now running on full power. And the lowly rendered frames are gone.

These are very weird and bizarre issues.

Hope this info helps.

Well I'll be dipped in S^$&...

The AM setting saved me approximately 200MB of VAS, and I finally made my Friday Harbor to Firstair trip without an OOM.

I can't thank you enough Steve...and everybody else that has contributed to this thread!  :yahoo:

...I finally made my Friday Harbor to Firstair trip without an OOM.

Each thread takes up a few extra Mb, and if it's running a 32bit thread on a 64bit operating system, there's a few more Mb per thread on top of that as well. There's upward of forty threads spawned from the sim, so it pays to select an affinity mask carefully, HT enabled or not.

Steve,

At the LM forum there is a thread about HT on and a severe memory leak in v3.1 http://www.prepar3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6312&t=116596

I have AM 340 and HT on , running at 4.4 Ghz

Without HT I can run at 4.5 /4.6 Ghz.

Recently I added many custom Autogen on top of my photoscenery.

Therefore I want to test my VAS usage without HT.

What is your advice on AM ?

Read the comment just above Gerard!

That thread seems not to be about HT on or off, it's about a memory leak reading certain xml.

Put it this way: HT off presents one Logical Processor (LP) per core. The jobsheduler looks at activity and moves on by one to find the next least used LP. If we turn HT on we have two LPs per core, they share the bandwidth like two threads on one non HT core, except that the task switching time is gone. So with HT on the CPU saves half the time switching, this can be significant. Unfortunately, when the jobsheduler moves along by one, it may well be simply moving to the second LP of the HT core, and so not moved off the core. Some apps, like FSX and P3D, with HT On, will begin with two full fat threads sharing the same core. So we apply an AM to mask one LP so that the next LP is on another core. With HT off that will always be another core. Some apps need help with that. If you want to save VAS and unnecessary heat, use an AM presents four LPs, with or without HT enabled.

Where you say you get another 100MHz or so from HT disabled, due to heat, that's because it's doing less work. Less Heat = Less Work. So you will find a trade off between extra GHz gained, and less work done.

Hey,

that`s absolutely true i also was wondering why the second p3d core is only running with about 20 % all the time. ( Thougt it has maybee something to do with this "scheduler" thing)

I used your trick and really the second core now is also running at about 90 %.

Actually i`m using AM=340 with HT on on my 5820K.  But as i`actualy doing a night flight i can not say to 100 % that my terrain loading issiues are also gone completly. But at least i can see night lightning at the ground :) Will do the same flight at daytime tommorow.

The new PMDG Version is crazy i could never do a flight with "good" settings ( Terrain Loading Ultra) , and the Autogen sliders all one away from full right, FS2Crew, FSPassengers and Pro ATC X, Ultimate Terrain 2, My Traffic 6, GEP3D and FlyTampa LOWW with 1150 MB VAS left and actualy i`m in the air since 1,5 Hours,  usually after that time i  have 450 - 550 MB left.

I am testing the AM=340 Seems much better.  I think I found the terrain issue loading on my end.  Just doing final test and will share results.  I am doing crazy heavy loading flights from KTCM-KSEA-PAE-FHR-CYVR.  I have all FTX regions enabled on top of vector, and Orbx KFHR, and FSDT CYVR with PMDG 777 (and active sky next, opus for cameras).  If I can get these area rendered smoothly all other areas are piece of cake

Hey how did you get 5820K to 4.7.  Are you using Water Cooling? or Air.  I have the same cpu on air cooled at 4.3ghz

Hey,

I purchased a "pretested" one which was reaching 4.5 Ghz Stable with 1.25 V so i had good chances to get him to 4,7 and i was lucky but he needs 1.34 V for that :)

And maybe my motherboard is also a reason why ( ASUS Rampage V Extreme)

I can also reach 4.8 Ghz without HT.

And yes i`m using watercooling to :)

Ah..watercooling.  Yeah, I can reach 4.5 at 1.25 but the temps shoot up.  I need to get water cooling (corsair h110i) during the later part of the year.

I also have the Asus Rampage V and running a 5930k at 4.4. I would like to go higher but the Asus 5 way overclocker only goes up to 4.4.

@warbirds: i did my settings manually in bios.

if you want i can post my settings tommorow.

@skywolf: i use a custom waterloop but i think a h110 is also good.
