Anyone try Islands of the West Indies

Featured Replies

Came across this on the flight1 website. Has anyone tried this yet? I don't fly the caribbean too much. Mostly because there are not too many good scenery addons for it. This looks like it could be pretty nice and covers a really large area.http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=iwi2004

I think they are very nice... but they ARE different. Not bad at all but different. The modeler took more of an artistic freedom I think in the look of the textures. They have a whole forum dedicated just to the addon:http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_topics.asp?FID=16I'm sure you read all sorts of feedback there.

A freeware alternative is the Antilles 2004 (v1.3) package:http://www.jg-laurent.com/en/ Not quite so "artistic" -- more standard FS-look. (This is a matter of your preference--I'm not making a judgment here.) The authors' package has plenty of airports, landclass, island detail, and so forth. Worth a look if you want to try out the Caribbean.Best,Mike

I'd echo Mike's comments, Antilles 2004 is an excellent package.Jim

I have bought it and installed it and has flown it and I am COMPLETELY DISSAPOINTED.I guess I'VE been burned with this scenery add-on.I think the author wasted all these 4 years to come up with this product (parts 1 to 4).I got burned once with the one made for FS 2002. and I thought they have corrected it for FS 2004. I guess one never learns and is due to get burned again.I own averything that either Flight1 or DreamFleet (never had a problem with them)have made or publish except for UT and Ultimate Traffic (I use My Traffic 2.1). I am so dissapointed!!!This has to be the worst scenery I have paid for. THE TEXTURES LOOK LIKE fs98 0R fs2002 or nothing like anything I have come acroos, just a sad Greenish folliage /tress and a funny redish looking sand. There is a case of color blindness or exuberant artistic freedom for colours of textures, REALLY WEIRD AND NOT REAL FOR THIS PART OF THE WORLD. tHE WATERS ARE ok.The textures are ugly IMHO and those airports to which I in real life have flown to in my 1969 A36 Bonanza do not look at all like what is given in the scenery. I am talking about Margarita Island (unrecognizable). Curacao ( does not include any details of the Island -The Refinery ,the Oil Terminal(the biggest in the world, etc)the Famous Two bridges in the inlet Bay. Aruba does not even show the Hotels on the way to the airport. Los Roques Island in Venezuela 90 miles from Caracas (a popular weekend hot spot for pilots-the runway looks that one from a super Aircraft carrier and it is an Island in itself, surrounded by water all around, I am yet to find out how the parked static planes got to that spot since the runway is non existent where they areparked, the one previously mentioned does not exists in reality). Saint Martin (there are a lot of excellent freewares available. La Tortuga Venezuela (a runway in the hard sand of this Island of the coast of Venezuela very baddly implemented) It shows a fully asphalted airport and a Huge resort building- in reality the few building that do exists are fishermen Huts, etc, etc, etc. The supposedly buildings (except for those in the airport itself look like match boxes, the two stories are one one match box on top of the other.I was looking at the scenery folder and I do not see any excl. bgl file. How do i get rid of the real bad airports ( I should ask for my money back instead)and try to salvage my investment???Good thig I did not have any Island of West Indies installed (I just reformated my Laptop)so I am convinced that the effect is just because the scenery is just plain BAD.My Setup:Alienware P4 3.6 mhz 2gigas Memory 17" ScreenSecond Lcd 19" ViewSonic2X60giga HD 7200rpm Nvidia 6800 256 megas on boardCreative Sound Blaster Audigy 2NXEdmundo CardenasCaracas, Venezuela
Proud pilot of [link:www.flymeridian.com]Meridian Airline][/b

The best course of action is to be very mature about the issue. Get in touch with the developers and let them know honestly and NICELY how you feel. My bet is that if they are any kind of company that is interested in staying in business they will listen to you and others who may have the same concerns. Personally i checked out their screenshots and saw what you are talking about. The textures have a cartoonish appearance and do not look very realistic. Not bashing the product, its just not my cup of tea. Let them know how you feel and see what happens. If you do it in a mature fashion, you will likely get your money back.Hornit

Hornit: You say "If you do it in a mature fashion, you will likely get your money back."It is not a question of Money.I just wonder how such excellent company as Flight 1 could this let go through and for so many years.I am just hoping to get some advice on how to get rid of the worst and live with rest....But Flight1 -an excellent Company-should be interested in our opinion.I am sorry if being this frank offends some of you. I think IMVHO that these Forums are a way to let fellow simmers know about our own experience. After all this no freebie. I think we have the right to let others know about it.I do not know what you mean by " to be very mature about the issue"I have just made a report about the Islands in this part of the world and their airports and surroundings, places I know well. And this add-on does not reflect that, and I am upset, and I am explining Why.Edmundo CardenasCaracas, Venezuela [link:jdtllc.com|http://jdtllc.com/images/RCsupporter.jpg

I bought all the parts of the series as they were released and really enjoy them. There is some artistic liscense there, but IMO it gives FS a nice refreshing look.If I had to do it over I would buy them all again. 100% satisfied.

I tried a free preview and was dissappointed with the fact that there is no wave action with water textures. It is static. In other words no waves washing up on shore. I wrote about it and they said its the way FS ia and they couldnt do anyhting about it.So gladly I did not purchase

IWI are an excellent representation of the area as it really is.While details are a bit low in areas to prevent it bogging down even the most powerful systems, the colours ARE realistic.Maybe you've never been there to appreciate how colourful an area it really is."I do not know what you mean by " to be very mature about the issue""And there's your problem, and why you'll never get a serious response from developers. If you don't treat them as human beings and keep spouting abuse their way they'll not be inclined to help you out.

As said it's different from your average scenery addons, but quite likeable. The ground textures and most structures are really optimised for mid-high altitude flight, not hugging the earth, so expect somewhat blocky textures and buildings when seen close up (this is in contrast to most addons featuring such detail, which are usually meant for low altitude flight). It's created and tested by people who love the Caribbean, more than a few of them live or lived there and AFAIK everyone involved has been there at least once.

I'm not minimising your displeasure in any way, and I do appreciate your frank review. I'm just passing on a bit of "experience" in that I might go about it a slightly different way. Ive had very good results in the past when something wasn't quite to my liking. By "mature" I'm not trying to talk down to you in any way. What I mean is that before coming in here and discussing your issues, that you should be taking it up with the developers, thats all. Once you have resolved those issues then come on in here and let us know what you think, thats all. If you re-read your post above, it is slightly on the harsh side. Nothing wrong with telling it like it is, just do it with a bit of diplomacy, thats all Im saying.Hornit

Edmundo,IWI is a 4 year development process from one designer with a specific style, using hand-rendered textures. It is for those that want better detail in the Caribbean. Why does Flight1 carry it? Because the IWI series has a large following going back to the 1st in the series, and customers wanted it! So should we not also be interested in their opinion. Your opinion is appreciated, just not the way you said it.Do we (Flight1) advertise "Ground Breaking Technology!" or "Taken from Satellite and Arial Photographs"? Do we retouch the photographs on the product page? No. You see what much of the product is about at the site, and many like it, and if they are happy about it, then we are happy to provide it.Regardless, there is the 30 day return policy. So how are you "burned" as you say? So we do take some offense to customers saying stuff like thatRegarding the poster who mentioned no wave action in certain areas... A problem is with coral or sand bars. That has to be custom textured. So that can't be a "water" square. It would be great if it was possible to have effects on those typs of squares... you could have corals, underwater appearing items, etc. Maybe in the next FS version they will allow that!Steve

Thanks,

"It's created and tested by people who love the Caribbean, more than a few of them live or lived there and AFAIK everyone involved has been there at least once."I have lived and flown in the caribbean region for for practically all of my life and I can agree that a good majority of IWI is not up to par with sceneries that are avaiable today. Being to an island once does not justify being able to create a great product. Even if you live on the island. However, dispite the attemp it is a good one and I am certain that is appreciatiated by many who have never been to or experienced the Cairbbean islands. On the downside I know that many island flyers don;t rant and rave about it but use it becuase it is just about the only that is available."Antilles 2004" by FS Antilles Group is another great optionJust my two centsCrosswind

I'm one of those people who love this addon. This is one of my favorite areas to fly, and it does two things very well:-greatly enhances a large area from the default-has very little impact on performanceThe default fs2004 textures in this area remind me more of the northeast US than the tropical Caribbean. The default area (with the exception of TNCM) is just not very fun to fly. Textures are always a matter of opinion, and hard to rate. We could sit here all afternoon and argue what is "right" or "wrong", but I think most know that is a worthless exercise. The biggest thing for me is performance. This is another opinion thing, but I would much rather have limited detail with high performance. Putting every structure in the scenery might look very real, but if it drops my fps into the teens then to me it is worthless. Again, let me state that is just my opinion, neither right or wrong. We all have different expectations as to visuals vs performance.
